The only young man worth anything in this story is Col. Stubbs. Hamill had no right to propose to Lucy without enough money to live on. Tom should never have given away his heart to his own ruin. Ayala and Lucy should understand that money is necessary for life. You can't live on love alone. Frank and Septimus aren't any better. The only person I feel sorry for is Tom Tringle, Sr.
