I lived in Aylesbury from birth (1971) till 1992 and loved it. Especially the old parts around St. Mary's etc. But I think it's been spoiled by redevelopment. I much preferred the old friars square, civic centre and civic swimming pool. The old Odeon cinema etc. Most of my childhood haunts are gone sadly.

Hi Ant I’m with you all the way I love the walk round st Mary’s , taking my young daughter to the old odeon and seeing bands at the civic I even preferred the old swimming pool in the vale park ! Thanks for giving the video a watch 🙏

I didn't mind Aylesbury in my younger years in the 70s. Originally born at the Royal Bucks in 1970 and lived in a tied cottage alongside Heygates flour mill in New Mill, Tring. We then moved to Eight Acres in Tring before moving to Argyle Avenue in Quarrendon. My dad worked at Askeys in Stocklake, bringing back big bags of pompadour wafers, which were really mourish My mum's mother and father lived in Stanhope Road. Grandad was a printer for Hazel, Vinney & Watts, before working at Aero Prints in Gatehouse Road. Mum worked at Nestlé and then Sainsburys in the old Friars Square. I loved Aylesbury even though Quarrendon was apparently a rough area alongside Southcourt, but as a young kid, you never really noticed it. We eventually moved to Hampden Road in Stoke Mandeville, where I attended Mandeville secondary school before living with my dad and his girlfriend in Tring before ending up in care in Hemel.

Hi Marvin , that’s a coincidence , I rented a room in a ladies house in Argyle avenue probably about 30 years ago ! I remember when askeys was a huge factory open 24 hours a day , southcourt was known to be a rough area in those days ! Iv lived in Aylesbury for 40 years ( I’m originally from Lincoln) and Iv never found it too bad at all ! Thanks for your great message 😊

I'm also from Aylesbury. 40+ years. Now do the same walk around town on a Friday night... While I agree it isn't the worst place in the world, the town is one giant traffic jam and the rest is rapidly turning into a giant housing development.
@theexiledyellowbelly7142 жыл бұрын
Hi 1905 I totally agree the traffic has never been improved I was sat at the horse and jockey lights the other evening thinking and this is really better than the old roundabout is it ? But worst place to live ? Ridiculous ! As you say shame about all the redevelopment though 😞
@joelhall51242 жыл бұрын
In fairness, it is a bit shit here now. The independent shops are gone, town is a glorified takeaway with a few chain stores, and the town is growing too fast. Don't get me started on the historic buildings being ripped down and HS2
@theexiledyellowbelly7142 жыл бұрын
Hi Joel I agree totally but that’s happening in a lot of places which of course is wrong ! There is certainly a lot to moan about in Aylesbury ! But the worst place to live in England noooo it’s a long way from that ! Don’t you think ?
@joelhall51242 жыл бұрын
@@theexiledyellowbelly714 well, having been born here, back in the days when babies were born in the Royal Bucks, and therefore a proper Aylesbury bloke of 4 decades, I'd have to hand the crown for worst place to High Wycombe...
@theexiledyellowbelly7142 жыл бұрын
Hi Joel well you have got me there 😊I’m not a proper Aylesbury bloke but in fairness to myself I have been here long enough to have visited my cousin in the royal bucks when she had her son ! 😊when it comes to Wycombe I have to bow to your superior knowledge Iv hardly ever visited the town ! Just to correct you about David Bowie - he performed in the Borough Assembly Hall which was behind the Green Man pub. The same building as the Market Theatre, it just got renamed later on. I was as mystified as you when I heard Aylesbury was voted the worst place to live. I've lived here all my life - for 50 years. I've seen a lot of changes but a lot of things have stayed the same. Like you said, there are far worse places to live than Aylesbury. What is wrong with people?! I think I will share this on Aylesbury Remembered - you could do with some more views :)

Hello dear all, ** Please read if you consider to live in Aylesbury! ** I am not from Aylesbury and not even an English born, I am British why I am saying this I have nothing to prove to this place or residents, I think voting Aylesbury as worse place in the UK absolutely irrational, unrealistic as well as disturbing. Let me explain why… *Aylesbury is an old little town and since 2012 (please correct me if I am wrong on this date) town and council has excessive housing developments projects all around of the town. *This is also because Aylesbury has very convenient location, which called commuter belt, little town has 3 train lines that put you heart of London within 40-50mins these are ; Aylesbury town, Aylesbury Vale, Stoke Mandeville. *Lately Aylesbury become preferable location for first time buyers and Londoners, due to affordability and convenience of the house conditions. Many first time buyers are not available to but a “project house” (old house to refurbish) as project houses needs good amount of cash on top of mortgage deposit and this is not very a common case for first time buyers. For Londoners it’s convenient on location and commuting. * Aylesbury’s official crime rate reported as 80/1000 Checked some well known towns/cities official crime rates: Oxford 81/1000 Cambridge 84/1000 Windsor 81/1000 And some worse rated/knows areas: Slough 100/1000 Peterborough 89/1000 West Yorkshire 114/1000 Which clearly doesn’t makes Aylesbury worse place to live. * I think this rating comes with either new comers to the town or town’s old residents, *if you are a new comer from London to Aylesbury and expecting to find Mayfair / Soho in Aylesbury this is not going to happen. This expectation never ever lead you anywhere in the UK and you will be unrealistic about your expectations. Anywhere out of of London is pretty much countryside or town like places in the entire UK. * New comers can also complain about traffic, this is understandable due to city expanded significantly and got many new residence since covid started! This inevitably brings traffic jam highly likely town wasn’t really ready to handle influx of new residents+drivers *Housing market in Aylesbury super dynamic, there are houses sold within hours in certain locations! Based on my conversations South court, Walton court, Manor park areas are not very recommended, Stoke Mandeville Hospital areas, Bedgrove , Broughton areas in South Aylesbury, Berryfields in North Aylesbury are listed as sought after locations. You can find tidy, clean and affordable houses. Houses are gaining good market value as well. * For old Residents it can be overwhelming as town is welcoming many new faces and families within short period this is not a surprise as so many housing projects still in process and council committed to complete Aylesbury Garden City project, there are many more enhancements planned for this little town. All this developments and enhancements can be hard to digest for people whom choose the town for it’s village characteristics and this might lead complaints. To be honest any newly build towns has this objections from their residents check out Milton Keynes. *I also checked comments entered to this “unofficial survey” people are truly judging other people by their looks very offensive way… I detest to read such brutal comments about other people’s features. I hope people with such hateful thoughts are only driving by and not living in Aylesbury. *Stoke Mandeville Hospital is well established Global Hospital for spinal injuries. “Stoke Mandeville Hospital and the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) are renowned worldwide for the successful treatment of spinal injuries and as the birthplace of the Paralympic movement“ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31808464/ *Town has great village locations, Wendover, Aston Clinton, Waddesdon, Tring, and you are only step away from countryside. Conclusion: More I think more I realise that this rating is very unfair to a developing town, let it grow and glow. I will be happy if you reply with your thoughts. Thank you x
