Dangers of Being Friends With 'the Ex'

In this video, we answer the question - Is it ok to be friends with 'the Ex'?
We highlight some reasons why one chooses to be friends with the Ex:
1. There is a false hope that the relationship can be rekindled even though 'the Ex' in question has now moved on to a new relationship.
2. During a 'break up', the initiator says "we can still be friends" and this is (most of the time) just out of pity.
3. Many want to keep the 'friendship' with 'the Ex' for a selfish gain (sexual, material or financial) i.e friends with benefits.
4. Some want to keep tabs on 'the Ex' and literally monitor their every move and relationship life.
5. Sometimes, 'the Ex' is part of a wider friendship circle and it may be difficult to avoid them.
We also highlight some dangers associated with 'friendship' with 'the Ex' :
1. It is difficult to move on to the next.
2. The 'friendship' can cause a strain in a new relationship.
3. There may be an unintentional comparison between 'the Ex' and the next.
4. The friendship is not 100% genuine. It is difficult to relate with 'the Ex' without boundaries.
5. An Ex cannot be trusted to give good advice especially one relating to relationships or marriage.

I wish my current girlfriend would watch this video. What you saying is so true, I want to share my personal experience on this too. We almost broke up with her because of her EX, whom she entertained, and the EX started intimidating her, threatening her that if she does not come back to him, He will kill me. Surprisingly, she was so scared and she told me about it, and I was so angry because she was asking me what should we do to protect ourselves, yet she was the one who kept him closer to her.

Well, I was also of your school of thought until recently. I feel like if the relationship ended amicably, then you could still be friends. Some people become exes because of distance issues, family issues, maturity issues and the likes. However, friendship in this case is more like a distant friendship rather than a close friendship as was the case before. You can still say hello once in a while "if" the situation arises, particularly if you are certain that you have moved on.

LOL I do agree with both of you, Ope and Ayo. Like I can not comprehend how you want to come and now be friends with an ex when your relationship didn't work out. Biko wasn't the basis of that relationship supposed to be friendship in the first place? I know a few people who actually are friends with their ex but I think they are from Mars, because for me o, it can not work. Also had a thought in my head about getting over an ex when you mentioned to send an email. I think you could do a video highlighting tips on how to get over an ex in the near future.
