Thinning out crowded azalea foliage allowing light into the interior to promote lower branching. Instead of throwing away all the cut back foliage I attempt to grow cutting's with them.

1. Please talk next time. I enjoy watching and listening to videos awhile I'm cooking. Don't always have the time to just watch and read. 2. You never mentioned when we do this? Winter to almost spring BEFORE they bloom or after it blooms and they die off? We're new to growing them and that would really be helpful. Your plants look pretty but I need some convo, share what's going on you know? Thanks anyway.

How do know which branch in the group to cut? Also, I think that I have let my azaleas grow too tall. They are bushy at the top and very thing in the middle branches closer to the roots. Some branches have died. This is the end of August. Can I cut the whole thing back and not kill the plants to start them over for next season?

Thank you for easy to follow video. I am a floral designer and have always wondered why the azaleas we get from our wholesalers don’t thrive when planted outdoors. They are different than the ones I buy at my nursery. I’m in Calif.

Thank you for the video. I planted a few Encore Azaleas last year. They tend to be a bit pricey here. Do you think this will work with them? Also you don’t seem to use a rooting hormone. Does that matter? You said you use potting mix and sand. Is that 50/50? Thanks for any help. So nice to have a video just demonstrating what to do.
@chipdouglas71175 жыл бұрын
I only use a few handfuls of sand in a 2 gallon bucket of soil mix. regular potting mix, coir peat and perlite. You don't need rooting hormone check out my newest jbp air layer video I show one of my latest azalea cuttings they are rooting now. You can see where I keep them too.

You could turn it into a bonsai but i dont think you could grow a tree out of it. I heard it grows like a bush.

Great vídeo chip! , one question though on the last plant with the long leggy stems how come you didn't head them back even a little bit wont it grow straggly as it gets older? Please let me know I want to try your Technique with my azaleas but I have one that looks more like the last one you showed,it's a bit straggly and I want it to look natural but yet a little bit Fuller.
@chipdouglas71175 жыл бұрын
This azalea was removed from the ground approximately 18 months ago I let it grow and regain health this is why it's so leggy. After flowering has finished in spring I'll cut it back so it looks more like a compact shrub.

When should we cut it
@chipdouglas71175 жыл бұрын
Best time is when flowers are finished in spring this gives enough time to make new flowers for the next spring.
