Can a 25 Year-old RV Roof Be Saved? 1996 Safari Trek

A channel viewer contacted me to evaluate his 1996 Safari Trek roof. It did have moderate delamination and decades worth of re-sealing. Though a new roof would have been ideal, it would have also exceeded the value of the RV. After going through the options, we agreed that the old components should be replaced and all the seams be torn down to the base and then re-sealed. So join me as I discover mistakes the factory made over 24 years ago when building this 1996 Trek. Thanks!

I enjoy learning from your work. I'm getting ready to take on a front cap and wall rebuild on a 2010 Jayco Octane ZX toy hauler. It's all aluminum sides with a Rubber roof. Previous owner covered up the rotten areas before he put it up for sale. I wasn't smart enough to find them when I bought it. Lesson learned. @@AZExpert They should of put a new roof on and get 25+years of worry free problems down the road. They have lifetime spray on roofs now I think armor guard or something like that. Seen some videos off it done, looks very nice and that warranty hard to pass on. In your professional opinion, do you think that would be an option for an RV like this or is it something to steer away from?

Nothing wrong with adding an oscillating multi tool to your arsenal of work tools. I recently purchased the dewalt version. Makes scraping sealant off a much more manageable task. I was surprised at how well it worked.
@AZExpert
@AZExpert 4 жыл бұрын
I have two oscillating tools, but with the textured roof and the material being FRP, the tool can easily plunge into the roof and cut it. I also found the factory sealant to peel away almost completely clean as long as I pulled and stretched it. It was just so difficult to find the screws and original sealant through all the additional layers. Thanks!!!
@gawags4709
@gawags4709 4 жыл бұрын
@@AZExpert Yes finding the screws through that many layers is exhausting. Well at least now I know why they use so many screws at the factory. It's because half of the screws don't seem to grab much of anything. Be safe and stay healthy!

WOW. I’m new to your channel and have seen you work wonders! You always take such care with these roof repairs, I honestly thought that was your specialty. I really wish I lived closer to AZ (I’m in the midwest) because I honestly believe you can save my 1987 (Chevy) Aerolite by Establishment mini motorhome. Everything is great on it and it runs well, but the roof leaks. Do you have any experience with working with the roof on those? My dad, who’s really handy, is gonna help me fix it but, I can’t figure out what it’s made of. Do you know?
@AZExpert
@AZExpert 4 жыл бұрын
First, thank you very much. Second, I couldn't really say without seeing the roof. There are usually 3 types of roofs, membrane, metal, fiberglass. A membrane roof will feel rubbery and soft. Probably the easiest way to find out would be to remove a small sewer vent or remove the ceiling garnish around a vent from the inside and look to see if there are membrane flaps or a visible cross section of the roof. Thanks!
@TheFeliceSkye
@TheFeliceSkye 4 жыл бұрын
AZ Expert thanks so much for responding. I removed the ceiling garnish around the vents and there is no flap. The body is fiberglass but, the roof seems like there may possibly be a membrane on it but I’m still not sure. Whatever it is, it’s not smooth. Kinda like ripples in random places like it wasn’t smoothed out properly. I’ll just have to take it to an RV shop to find out. Thanks again. Great video. I am assembling my supplies to clean and seal the roof on my 2001 Bantam Trail-Lite 23 ft expandable B-23-S. This is our first travel trailer and I've already replaced the vent lids and AC shroud. It has an Alpha Systems Vinyl roof. The topside is white and the bottom side is black so I am assuming it is EDPM. The Alpha Systems Company videos say you don't need to coat the roof just wash it but, it looks as though someone has coated it in the past as I am seeing paint peeling off the top. My question to you would be, should I just clean off the flaking paint with a pressure washer and rechalk around the vents, AC, etc. or use the Dicor two-step method? Thanks, Ken, Prescott, AZ

Thanks again. After old sealant removed, is best practice on old roofs to remove any and all screws and replace with correct size and not Phillips head? In other words inspect for water leaks around every roof penetration? I missed what product is best to seal over the repaired seams/parts? What do you reccomend?
@AZExpert
@AZExpert 4 жыл бұрын
I just like #2 square bit screws, they install and remove easiest. The sealant type will largerly depend on the roof material and the previously used sealant. The most common RV roof sealant is Acrylic Self Leveling lap sealant. There are a number of different sealants depending on the roof, but in general you need to use a self leveling as it will not leave voids and bubbles which do cause leaks. Thanks!
@dewholdingsllc1050
@dewholdingsllc1050 4 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks. I’m asking if you remove all existing screws for inspection if water leaking and replace the screws and sealant. My project is Winnebago Vectra, which you previously said was filon roof. No idea what sealant was used looks oem
@AZExpert
@AZExpert 4 жыл бұрын
Winnebago uses NuFlex 311 it is self leveling silicone and nothing else will stick to it so you need to use that. I would not recommend removing all screws just for an inspection. On this roof I could see the front and rear caps were loose and we were replacing all other vents due to age anyway.

There are times I use a multi tool, but with a textured older roof and multiple different layers of sealant, I could not risk slicing into the roof material. The original sealant would have absorbed most of the vibrating cutting power anyway. But thank you for the suggestion!

You would have to replace the control board, optical board, wiring harness, and install a 12vdc element. Sadly, it cannot be done without spending more than the cost for a three-way unit. 12vdc is rarely used on much more than a class B and only when the engine is running. Sorry!

That's a good question. I likely would have recommended a spray on roof first from APR/RVSeal.com as transistioning to a membrane roof would have been labor intensive. We coud have installed a new filon roof but the spray on roof would have been the most cost effective with the textured surface.
