Your intention is certainly noble, however this is actually a much more complex matter. Believe me, you do NOT want the govt to ban fiberglass in beds. Fiberglass actually began being used in place of much much, much more dangerous fire retardant materials that were carcinogenic. Federal law requires beds to be fire retardant to a certain degree. In order to achieve this, manufacturers were using all sorts of nasty materials that again were much more dangerous than fiberglass. Ironically using fiberglass was a huge breakthrough. , Most memory foam matteresses under $1000 today have fiberglsss inside as a fire retardant. The alternative is much more expensive beds or another breakthrough in materials.

I'm sorry to have to inform you, but the government is responsible for this. In 2007 the Consumer Product Safety Commission began requiring all mattresses sold in the US to be flame retardant. As a result, all companies except Sleep Essentials, makes their mattresses flame retardant using either fiberglass or toxic chemicals. The CPSC did this for the chemical industry, large mattress manufacturers, and perhaps fiberglass manufactures to make more money through these idiotic regulations. Do a lot of homework before buying ANY mattress.

The only person to blame here is the consumer who didn't read the care instructions and then took a week to clean a cover. I hate to sound like a jerk but these mattresses cost $100-$140. This is how I was able to get things clean enough to sleep well at night with no itching: 1. Get rid of the mattress-- I never took the cover off but they still got through the outer cover. I wouldn't try to seal the fibers in. Not worth the risk. 2. Vacuum carpets with a HEPA filter. Go in different directions, have a fan blowing out a window since vacuums can kick up dust. Or remove carpeting I guess. 2. Have your dryer vent cleaned. It may be clogged enough that it allows some fiberglass & lint back onto your clothes-- Even after buying new clothes, washing/drying them once made them itchy again, but when hang-dried they were fine. Dryer vents need to be cleaned every few years anyway. 3. Hand wash/rinse contaminated clothes to get it all out.--This was what made a night and day difference. Try vinegar too if you want. I guess my HE front loading washer just doesn't agitate the clothes enough to get all the glass out. After doing this, I had my first good night of sleep in 3 months and it hasn't failed in 5 days. Hopefully only one or two washes is enough. Vacuuming with an upholstery attachment didn't work as well. I'm still wary that they can get re-contaminated since I live with roommates who aren't as sensitive as me and wash/dry their clothes in the same machines, but we'll see if running a rinse cycle before I use them really works.
@dtgallagallallagher
@dtgallagallallagher 4 жыл бұрын
@Liz Lee So after 3 weeks I can say confidently that the problem was other people's contaminated clothes being washed in the machine, not the fibers floating around or anything. Now that I hand wash my clothes I'm 100% back to normal. Idk if it'll work for you, but if it's really the fiberglass it might make a difference.

@Liz Lee I just recently got my entire room exposed to fiberglass. Outside of the apple cider vinegar, getting rid of contaminated items, and hand washed/cleaning anything and everything, what else would you recommend? I've seen you've been dealing with this for a long while so I just figured you might have some tip or tricks that I could use. Unfortunately, I can't get rid of the mattress as I don't have the money to replace it, but I did put on a cover to hopefully seal in anything else that might come out. I will be getting rid of it once I am sure that the room is good enough to move new stuff in to. I will also be getting rid of any clothes that has been contaminated and putting anything else in bags that might be contaminated

Any mattress that has fiber glass on the inside clearly states on the tag (the one that says remove under penalty of law) to only spot clean, and never remove the cover. IT also lists fiber glass as a component of the inner fire retardant cover. I know this because after reading about this today I looked on the Zinus mattress we bought 3 years ago. IF you follow those instructions and care for the mattress then it will never become a bio-hazard. That said I will likely avoid buying another such mattress if at all possible but as long as the cover is cared for and a damaged mattress is disposed of rather than treated the way this lady treated hers (i.e. not reading warnings on the outer cover) then these mattresses are find and are chemical free (unlike non-fiber glass). In the end these things cost $100-150 for a twin; they aren't primo and I'd rather buy a new one than salvage a damaged one and end up with $$,$$$ EPA hazard in my house.

I have had the same problem 😥 didn't see the warning. Saw a commercial of a couple trying to put their whole mattress in the wash and a comment on the video was like "that's why your mattress cover has a zipper, just wash that" upon removal, the fiberglass looked like feathers, as I've never seen fiberglass before. I looked up "glass splinters" after seeing it everywhere, washed all my clothes 3 times, getting rid of most of them, vacuumed and lint rolled the bed and room surfaces religiously. In re-decorating the room, the bed frame was rotated and the mattress picked up. In being picked up, more fiberglass exploded out of it. It's a polyurethane mattress made in 2014 and I'm so tired 😖 cant fine the lint rollers, just did laundry and the vaccum is dead 😭

Please help. My husband removed the cover off my daughter's mattress after she peed the bed. He threw the cover in the wash with the rest of her bedding. I knew about this problem so I panicked and he grabbed it out of the washing machine. We then threw the cover on the mattress and wrapped a sheet around it and took it outside. It was exposed for maybe 10 minutes. I vacuumed with my shark and we realized the box spring had some on it. my husband wrapped that in a sheet and we took that outside as well. We used a lint roller on areas around the bed and didn't really find any shiny pieces. My question is how long before she can go back in her bedroom? I washed her bedding twice. Now i'm questioning if I should just throw it out or not. She has some clothes sitting on top of her dresser. Should I wash them or just throw them away? I used a flashlight on my clothing I wore to do my initial cleanup and don't see anything. I also have had the door shut and have been running my very large Shark Air cleaner. Should I have closed off vents and air returns?? I'm panicking right now. thanks

My Ashley furniture queen 12" foam matress leaked fiberglass through the bottom where the cover is black and a different material. It took months to find the source and now my life is a nightmare and worse for my cats. I can't afford to move out and joined a class action lawsuit. I'm glad I found the source but my HVAC ducts and fabrics are all contaminated. I have to buy a new bed, new clothes, new dryer, new vacuum, clean my vehicles and try my best to keep my cats healthy. It's been a month of cleaning and my cats are still sick. They all stopped eating and hide in areas with fresh air. They eat mostly wet food now which is expensive. They all lick their lips and cried for months before I found out why. I thought it was bad cat food to laundry detergent for weeks until I saw fiberglass in my shirt after itching. I just want to give up and sell the house at this point. I care more about my cats than myself and have been wearing old clothes I had in totes. I have to clean every single day and getting in the crawl spaces to take apart the duct work stresses me out thinking about it. I hate these companies who get away with this

I need to get a get the vents cleaned before I can use heat this winter and I'm dreading that price quote. 2 of my cats are doing better but one is going to the vet tomorrow from wheezing sneezing and he's obviously still irritated. I am a keen guy. Now let me describe what you will feel when these fine bits of bad fiberglass land on your skin. You try to brush the shards off your skin - it is a little bit like porcipine quills that have backed-up barbs - IT WILL HURT when you try to brush them off. Basically they are like new skin tags that are difficult to get off. Vacuuming it is the only way to get rid of them but here is the new problem - the shards are like a strong magnet - something like super glue on your skin.

So I took the cover off to wash like a lot of others but threw it away after noticing the fiber glass layer. Then I just put a couple of mattress toppers both ways and vacuumed. Using natural materials is excellent and has its own challenges (I.e mould and fire resistance) and I’m certain you’d find others interested in your findings, due all the chemicals and non renewable materials manufacture relies on a lot and in we create a demand for either knowingly or unknowingly. If the total price is similar to the market cost of these mattresses in question I’d hazard a guess that it would be worth it for families and the environment for them to take the time to make their own. I never took the cover off of mine. It still broke down after a few years now and fiberglass dropped all beneath where I sleep on bed. Luckily there was a dust ruffle to contain it there, but then I made the mistake of vacuuming with a regular vacuum, which spread the particles into the air and there's now a layer of it on everything in the room. A friend suggested using nylon pantyhose to wipe everything. That's my last hope I guess. BTW don't put anything with the shards into the washer/dryer - it'll ruin those too. Shards just get smaller and spread.

Liz Lee oh no I did the same thing with $100s in bedding, clothes, pillows. Since then, some hope. I just tried soaking other clothes in washer in hot water with a cup of apple cider vinegar today. IDK how it works but it did. I don't see the fibers on them. And for dryer I got damp towels wrapped in pantyhose and wiped the drum and everything down with those. So far, so good. When I shine my phone flashlight on clothes there's no trace of the fiberglass, visually. I'll have to see whether I start itching though when I wear clothes and let you all know.
@codeslob2464
@codeslob2464 5 жыл бұрын
Liz Lee so far so good! (After the double cycles of hot soak with apple cider vinegar) the clothes seem fine. For the couch maybe try the damp towel wrapped in pantyhose and wipe it. It picks up the shards. I also tried wet vacuum (rented a high-power one bc I don't have one) with apple cider vinegar on carpet since dry vacuum just made it worse and spread it around. It seems to have worked and I cleaned the wet vac too before returning - no sparkles after using the vinegar. Next plan is to mist spray areas I'm going to dust off with water mist first, so it doesn't go airborne and spread. Then should be done with this mess. I got two vinyl bedbug mattress covers and double wrapped mattress. Unfortunately I have to work so I've just quarantined that room off until the weekend for the dusting part. Anyway, don't worry you'll get through this. I just can't believe this fiberglass is legal. Apparently it's in everyone's air ducts too as insulation so if it wears down will blow through vents and contaminate entire homes...unbelievable. smh
@codeslob2464
@codeslob2464 5 жыл бұрын
Liz Lee also my friends say try getting a standing HEPA air filter fan and running it continuously in contaminated room after cleaning in case any fibers get dislodged and airborne after the cleaning this should hopefully help catch them. So I'll eventually do that too. Also left windows open in there and closed off and sealed vents for now. Seems containment is the #1 priority once you discover the cause. Once it goes airborne it makes a bigger mess but it really helps to keep surfaces damp when cleaning by first spraying water mist. But anyway, wow is this a pain in the neck. I'm consumed by this cleaning job in my free time.
@codeslob2464
@codeslob2464 5 жыл бұрын
Liz Lee I know! It's awful. I'm so glad you'll try the apple cider vinegar though I think you'll be so relieved when you see it works. Well what I did was fill up the washer with hot water and added a cup of the apple cider vinegar then put it on soak first for at least 30 minutes before running the regular wash cycle. Luckily it dislodged the fibers from clothes AND the washer bin itself. But I also checked the clothes each time using phone flashlight to see if any sparkles before transferring to dryer (after I wiped down inside of dryer and lint catcher with pantyhose thing). If there were any sparkles at all I repeated the soak and wash again a second time in the washing machine and that did the trick. So apparently there's no need to soak them somewhere outside the washer prior. Hope that saves you some time. With the exhaust fan I'd suggest one with a HEPA filter that can easily be changed out with a new filter after several days, to capture the airborne particles. A regular fan will probably just get contaminated inside and also spread the fibers around. Did you try using the damp cloth wrapped in pantyhose for wiping down your couch? It worked for me on wood surfaces, corduroy, jeans and a sweater that had gotten those fibers on the surface of them after I made the mistake of dry vacuuming the carpet the first time where it just spewed it everywhere into the air. Not sure if the pantyhose thing works on surfaces where the fibers have been really worked in though. I think the apple cider vinegar wash is the best bet for those. Also a friend suggested a giant lint roller made of sticky side of duct tape to use on surfaces like plastic or leather that can't go in the wash. I haven't tried it yet though. Sounds like it would work. Let me know how it goes. Stay strong it'll be ok.

Liz Lee also be sure to use at least a hospital mask and ski goggles or something to protect eyes/nose/mouth at all times you're doing cleanup like vacuuming an area that's contaminated. Try to cover all skin/hair too. Cornstarch also keeps it from sticking to exposed skin. I used a full mask I had - it's like one you get from hardware store for spray painting jobs and whatnot, and I put a pantyhose cover over my hair. The airborne dust is bad news.

Is anyone completely itchy ALL over after sleeping on an uncovered memory foam mattress. It's been 3 days now and I can't stop itching. Legs, head, back, stomach, feet. I'm hoping this is the culprit.

READ THIS: This video is 100% accurate. Do as he says. BUT FIRST: DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN YOUR WASHING MACHINE/DRYER. You will ruin them. This happened to me, luckily it was contained to just 1 bedroom, but I had to throw away: mattress (obviously), 75% of my clothing, all my furniture, my drapes, curtains, etc, repaint the ENTIRE room, walls and ceiling, and start FROM SCRATCH with my bedroom. I ended up biting the bullet and buying one of those $1k organic mattresses, worth it. I had to vaccum the carpet probably 50 times. Air purifier is 100% NECESSARY. Masks. Hazmat Suit. and get yourself about 10 of the STRONGEST/WIDEST lint rollers you can get. Like the kind that are a foot wide and are advertised for pet hair. My experience with clothes? ...well good news and bad news. Bad news, there no easy option. Its stretching your favorite band t-shirt over an ironing board and lint rolling it 50 times, checking it EVERYTIME with a high powered flashlight for those little shiny fuckers. Good news? With many hours of due diligence, you can save an article of clothing. But NO you can't just wash it 20 times with vinegar or borax or something. You gotta manually pull out those fuckers with tape, lots and lots of tape. God-fucking-bless those going through this. WARN YOUR FRIENDS. BUY A GOOD MATTRESS. I slept a whole night on my Zinus fiberglass mattress without the cover... expecting cancer any day now. These (should be illegal) mattresses are like a bomb detonating in your room. AVOID at all costs and prepare to do a factory-reset on your room in hazmat gear. The hardest and most accurate truth in this video: Prepare to say goodbye to a lot of your stuff. Put your dearest valuables in a garbage bag and clean them later, but MOST of your shit is going in the dump. So try to go full Marie Kondo about it, and just reset your life.

Took the cover off our sons this morning to wash and put it back on. Then my chest started to itch. Realized my shirt had fiberglass all over it. Time to toss this mattress. Maybe we've figured out why my son coughs in bed every morning.

What is best is that we change fire retardant standards in the US! They are extremely outdated when they were first put into effect by cigarette companies receiving pushback in the 70s because people were falling asleep with lit cigarettes in bed. We have grown and been educated as a society and these standards need to go.

It's a nightmare I bought one online from walmart, I will never have a memory foam matress again , this one never had the cover removed or got wet at all only had it for like a month I started itching and thought I was allergic to something after going to the hospital and them telling me I had dermatitis and getting steroids and cream and it didn't help, went to my family doctor a week later for him to say the same and give me more steroids as I was laying in bed one night itching to death irritated eyes and throat hurting I said ol this always gets worse at night, let me look in my bed and lord oh lord when I picked up the sheet walls I saw was shiny sparkling fiberglass everywhere, my whole family is sick and more my baby as he sleeps with me and he hasn't slept good in over a month he has red spots on his skin irritated eyes sneezing and coughing and he itches his self all day, I feel so bad for him and my whole family is going crazy my husband and 3 other kids, I don't know what to do I am at a lost right now, I strongly recommend not to buy a memory foam matress to anyone because eventually those glass fibers will come threw the bed even with a protective cover on it, I would never wish this upon anyone it a nightmare for sure

Not all memory foam matresses have fiberglass in them. The foam itself has no fiberglass in it. It just depends on what the particular company chooses to use as an inner cover to make it fire retardant.

@jakobsmith1396 3 жыл бұрын
@@vanessamorales363 Oh, the law... you must be referring to regulation 1632. The 2007 (updated in 2014) regulation "Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads - 16 CFR part 1632" that dictates that the Consumer Product Safety Commission regulates the fire safety of matresses in the United States, which includes testing done by independent third party companies (one of which whom I work for)... and which absolutely has no such requirement. That law??? I think it's you who needs better research. Also, not only do not all memory foam matresses have fiberglass, the vast majority of matresses that DO have fiberglass do not have that sort of problem, or ANY fiberglass related problems whatsoever. The problem isn't simply that the matress has fiberglass in it, but rather how well the matresses is made ie. how the fiberglass is contained, or rather, not contained that is the problem. That, and the other problem is that there isn't anything in the law (or any other relevant law) that dictates how well fiberglass is contained in matresses in the first place. There have been 10's of millions of Americans, and 100's of millions of people all over the planet sleeping on matresses containing fiberglass over the past 15 years or so (and a further several million over the past 30 plus years) if they are really the problem you are suggesting they are, then there would be a world wide skin pandemic going on right now, and it would be a HUGE deal. Almost all of the relatively low number of fiberglass related problems reported have been linked to several individual manufacturers. If you actually care, or want to make a difference when it comes to this issue then you need to adjust your target... instead of just blindly blaming an entire genre of matress as the problem just because you heard it from some other person, who also has no idea what they are talking about, like a friend or some blog online. What you are saying is an opinion, but what I am saying is a fact. Not the same thing. Read it for yourself. Regulation 1632, in full, courtesy of the CPSC themselves. www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=59ceb81a60d382bcc84bf00de2828ad9&node=16:2.0.1.4.98&rgn=div5
