Takes over unless thinned out loves warm calm water. Turns red in cooler weather dies back in winter if a few pieces over winter they regrow in spring. Supposedly a great fertilizer put in your plants gonna try it

I've just recently found a wild pond that was covered with this stuff. But was a deep red color. Here is some info if you want to pin it? Azolla is initially green, like duckweed, but soon turns a red or brown color. This coloration is caused by Azolla's association with a nitrogen-fixing cyanobactrium-Anabeana azollae. In this symbiotic relationship, the bacterium gets a safe home while Azolla is provided nitrogen.Mar 16, 2011

The red color is caused by stress which could be due to nutrient deficiences, damn they really need to update that Google search

I gave Azolla a try, but broke apart too much for my liking. My preferred floating plant is Salvinia cucullata. The roots stay a good length, the growth has a nice look to it, and the leaves hold together fairly well.

Green Thumb Aquariums that’s definitely another one I like . I need to get some in for my store . I find azolla great in cooler temps and more delicate in warmer water .

@@MichaelEugenio its due to the water current if you reduce current it won't break apart as much, also of note the azzola in the video seems to be azzola crisista as its more cold tolerant than the heat tolerant filiculoides

How do you actually keep them in strong floating water? I tried to keep them but seems like the strong water flow is harming my duckweed and azolla

Suman Nath pros it keeps nitrates low and also a good source of food for the fish . Cons it’s messy and gets everywhere when you out you hand or arm in the tank

Hmmm Perhaps this can survive my goldfish tanks better than the duckweed. I have yet to have duckweed survive in my non tropical tanks.

@@soda4118 like any floating plant, just stick it in water with some nutrients! (Dirt or fish or whatever) Whispers: "it likes it cold" I swear if you miss the stranger things reference..

wyzemann floating plants are not for everyone. I totally understand what you are saying . I stay away from floating plants in my display tanks but love it. In my breeding tanks .

Michael Eugenio Well, I prefer wisteria & water sprite as floaters because of their nutrient removal & aesthetics. Also, they’re quite easy to “tame”🙂.

wyzemann yes sir those are awesome also . I love growing those in my green house. Very easy to propagate
