AZORES: CLIMBING TO THE PICO MOUNTAIN | The Highest Point in Portugal
On Pico Island, we find the highest point in portugal, Pico Mountain, 2351 meters high. Your trail consists of a climb to Piquinho (a small peak at the top of the mountain). It starts and ends at Casa da Montanha.
Along the way up, you'll find 47 landmarks. At first they are far apart, but as we move forward, the distance between them gets smaller.
If for lack of time, or for physical reasons, you feel that you are unable to climb to the top, you can take a hike to Furna Abrigo.
Both the ascent and the descent have an average duration of 3 to 4 hours (each!), and with fog it is necessary to pay extra attention, so as not to get lost. However, it should be noted that when registering at Casa da Montanha, we are given a GPS device, which works both as a receiver and as a transmitter.
It is possible to go up at different times. And it is also possible to go up without a guide. However, the option to climb at night to see the sunrise is only possible with a guide. It's still possible to go up in the late afternoon, and stay overnight in the crater, BUT you'll have to take the camping gear on your back.
In 2016 I thought about going up Pico, but the snow was starting to melt. This year, the dizziness took over me. But Alexandre climbed to the top. It took about 8h in total.

I'm quite surprised your channel doesn't have more views, but I found you due to my Azores interest/searches.The narration has been absolutely spot on.. I appreciate the English subtitles since I haven't learned Portuguese yet.. But I'm moving to Açores later. Are you guys from the islands also? Honestly keep up the great work, maybe some algorithm/optimization could help with views? The quality really deserves thousands more views.

It will take time to finish my project but I will be moving to Flores. I really really enjoyed the Flores video and you gave me a great impression of Sao Jorge too. Também não fui até ao topo, fizemos bem pq estava um tempo muito instável, vimos varios acidentados porque descer é pior e com chuva tudo fica escorregadio, tb é facil perder o norte dentro das nuvens, convem ter um grupo em forma e ir no próprio ritmo, fica para a proxima. Ainda tenho de ir la acima fazer um desenho, se possível com o por e nascer do sol para dividir o esforço. Ir até à furna já é muito bom, de resto, ha sempre a hipótese de levantar voo do Faial em direção a São Miguel e passar mesmo junto ao topo. Bom video!

Hi, thank you for the Azores video - all of them are just amazing! I visited Sao Miguel this year in October and now I decided to discover other beautiful islands. Just curious - what time of the year was taken this video? Is this really cold in the summer? October on Sao Miguel was very warm. Is this different weather on each island?

Hi there 😊 first of all thank you so much for the comment. I'm very happy! The climate between the islands it's similar. All these videos of the Azores were filmed in June. However, on the peak of mountain pico, it is usually to have a different temperature, normally 10 degrees lower at the top than at sea level. I think on the day that we climbed it was around 18°C or 20°C in the city so it was around 8°c or 10°c at the top.

Em relação a outros trilhos existem alguns, mas nesta ilha não os fizemos na íntegra, com exceção do das vinhas. Fizemos também parte do trilho da lagoa do capitão.
