It is obsolete for the role it was originally meant for but it has other uses.

The fire rate is too slow even against infantry and low flying drones. Against light vehicles tho, it's still a viable option.

In Indonesia, we still operate this AA cannon as an AA gun WITHOUT its AA radar and radio. Many mil-forum people here taking pity on our AA division because we don't have a lot of advanced AA weapons such as 9K333 or Stinger in our inventory. We even use old WW2 era AA monuments as a tool for readiness exercises. The latest one that we have is Oerlikon Skyshield but not too many of them to be deployed around our territory. We also still purchase ammunition for S-60 cannon according to the latest fiscal year of 2021-2023.

Russia's army goes from 14.5x114mm and 23x152mmB, then jumps to 30x165mm, then jumps to 57x348mmSR. It's a huge leap. Russia stopped using 37x252mmSR many decades ago, but China and several other countries still use it. China also has a 25x183mmB.

Its interesting that even totally obsolete AA guns are still very powerfull as ground support guns. Even a WWII era autocannon can do dirty against infantry using HE ammunition.

This rain is excellent against all low flying drones, helicopters and UAVS. Also perfect against advancing infantry and light armored vehicles

@WeaponDetective Ty for this video. I've seen it in news feeds on the back of trucks during the Russia/Ukraine conflict and wondered what it is. AZP S-60, ZPU-2/4 14.5mm, /ZU-ZSU-23/2/4 perfect examples of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it.'

Indonesian armed Force still use it in service today, i think i know the reason they keep it in service since 1965.

The real reason: because lack of budget and c0rruption. If the reason is that those S-60 cannons are for ground support use, then it shouldn't be assigned in Arhanud (Indonesia's Air Defence) units anymore; it should be assigned to ordinary Army units. The Arhanud units should be standardized with something similar as the Oerlikon SkyShield, minimum.

​​@@Etendard1708Not sure about this case, but there actually might be a kind of revival in some countries of old fashioned flak emplacements in protection of civilian infrastructure against cheap, slow but long ranged drones such as the now famous Shahed that Russia for example uses against Ukraine.

@@herptek S-60 has slow fire rate & too cumbersome.. even against drone warfare it's useless.. Oerlikon Skyshield, Polish Kobra system (based on ZUR-23KG), Russian Zu-23 are more suitable for that rule.

@@Etendard1708 ZU-23-2 is handy, and usefull, but shorter ranged. The disadvantages of these types of abundant guns might be less relevant when in comparison when in defense of civilian infrastructure that you can't afford to have protected by more modern and likely more costly AA guns, which will be a finite resource after all.

People saying it’s still very effective don’t understand how it even works or its performance. It’s equally ignorant to say it has no value though. It could be useful for protecting sites like Russian oil refineries. Against modern jets and 99% of drones, it’s useless. It can still be effective against helicopters, large drones such as the Shahed and Ukraine’s largest drones + GA aircraft. People saying it’d be great against infantry forget how saturated the battlefield is with drones. It’d get taken out by an FPV within 5 minutes.
