As a new hiker/backpacker, I love watching your videos. I’m planning a trip to Isle Royale NP in the fall, and a few nights ago I sat down and made a list of everything I want to take and still need to buy. My base weight came out to just under 20lbs (I could, and will, cut another pound from my pack). Seeing that yours came in at just over 12lbs, that makes me feel pretty confident in my choices. Thanks!

Thanks for the GREAT videos, I’m too old to attempt anything like the PCT, AZT etc, so I can get a good feel for what it would be like, we are only able to do 5-7 mile day hikes but love the outdoors. Next up for us is Mount Rainier Paradise and Sunrise areas. Safe Travels👍

Glad to see you made out good on the PCT i wasnt able to watch it all but i did catch a chunk of it! Culling gear its great! I am a one trekking pole kinda guy myself and always have been. I have down sized my packs over the years but nothing extremely light weight. I find in the adirondacks i like 500D cordura nylon fabric packs they take a beating and hold up very well. I've been using the camelbak trizip the past two years and its fairly small and has a removable hip belt which is a nice feature. I have culled some of my heavier gear thanks to your vids and my own hiking experience. Thanks for sharing Darwin!

Do a video on cheap shoe alternatives! This has been one of the hardest things to find. I'd personally rather go through 6 pairs of $50 shoes than 4 pairs of $120 shoes but every shoe recommendation video only discusses the top shoes available

So, for what it's worth, I carry my old US Army PolyPro long John bottoms, they're the base layer #1 (acquired 2007, not the new waffle ones). They are 5.7 oz (vs the Patagonia long johns 5.9oz) and cost about $15 on eBay (vs patagonia's $150). I don't know what the warmth difference is, but they are a cheaper option that I have never had an issue with, for those on a budget. I love the channel, just wanted to give this info to let people know that there is a budget friendly option.

I can't believe it , you mean I'm not the only one using Bag Balm but mine is in the can and I fill up and old Tylenol bottle to take along. Other than the smell it works better than lotions, and keeps your dry skin nice and soft whether it be your hands , feet or lips I love the stuff and have been using it since the early 70s. Made for Farmers but great for hikers.

I'd be really interested in a review - or discussion rather - of how you liked the Plexamid as compared to the Duplex. I'm assuming that it would perform similarly from a technical/feature perspective, so I'm more interested in your personal feelings about livability and size. And also those carbon stakes. They seem very thick so I'm wondering how well you'd get them into hard desert floor.

I always love seeing gear videos of what KZbin hikers are carrying because they're KZbin hikers! The average Joe hiker has a lot less weight on their back than me or you because they are not carrying the massive amount of camera equipment that we often carry. I always get a kick out of that. I've enjoyed watching your gear list video, I think what you have shown is a pretty amount of gear and it has even given me idea for my own gear list goals. Great video as always - Howdy from Shawnee National Forest country :)

Interested to see how the Plexamid holds up for you. I was excited to upgrade to one for my CDT hike but the first time I set it up in my backyard, one of the carbon stays broke. Great video! I saw the battery pack setup you've got going and was just wondering if you've looked at Anker's lineup of packs with Power Delivery (PD) input. Some of their models can charge via a 30w source, whereby your current portable charger only charges at 12w (roughly 3x faster, although that may lessen as charge exceeds 80%). You'd need a higher output charger (PowerPort Atom PD 1) but this paired with a faster charging battery pack would greatly reduce the time waiting for your pack to recharge. Anyhow, hope you have a great time on the AZT thru hike!

Bro, again, thanks for all the content that you are sharing! Well, the thing is that I'm musician and I'm going to travel on South America in one month... I need lightweight things because I'm carring a travel guitar, an amplifier, microphone(with the stand), batteries for the amp, and a pocket trumpet. All the stuff is not for the hikes, but I'm going to share my project and make all the hikes that I can! I want to ask you if you could recommend something to me for the journey or if you can do the hike gear list that you should use for all the weathers, like some gear that you can use in seattle on winter, and in california on summer. It's not the first travel that I'm going, and I know is too much weight, but I can't go without it, I'm going to share... and if the weight help me to share better, im going to carry it. Thanks in advance! And thanks! You do not know how much your videos have helped me.

I've been using the Columbia Silver Ridge shirts (2 regular, 1 flannel) for my travels. Thing is, they pill weirdly on the inside, especially at the elbows and cuff, which become more visible when I roll up the sleeves. Is that your experience too and something you've chose to live with? or, is the quality of shirts sold in India (where I am) questionably different from North America?

Okay so one think I'm always wondering when I see packs around 40L: Im at about the same baseweight...but how do you fit 7-8 days of food in just a 40L bag? I know you can store stuff like the tent outside to save volume, but my typical 7-day food takes up like 20L of storage... The sleepingbag alone takes another 20. How do you fit 7 Days of food in there?

Well Darwin very rarely carries 7-8 days worth of food. He averages like 30 miles a day. If you pack your food right you can probably fit 10 days worth of food in a 14L bag.

Hi Darwin, have you had any issues with your CNOC Vecto? I recently ordered two of the new version Vectos and they both leaked at the lid. I contacted Gilad at CNOC and he sent me two more (one leaked at the lid). I was wandering if you had any leaking issues and if you are using the cap that came with it.
@jackphillips76995 жыл бұрын
mike cannon I too had a leaky Vecto when I received mine. The leak was in the slider though, not the lid. CNOC sent me a new and improved slider and that fixed it. I do worry about that cap. It seems kinda cheap. It has no inner seal. I wonder if maybe you could replace it with a higher quality cap from a standard water bottle from the store? I think they’re universal and have more of a seal. Just a thought.
@michaelcannon95165 жыл бұрын
@@jackphillips7699 I was thinking the same thing. I shouldn't have to buy different water bottles to find the right cap but I really want this bag to work. It's the best option on the market right now as long as it does not leak. I need to be able to TRUST it on the trail. Thanks for your thoughts!

A one-inch hip belt isn’t going to provide any weight bearing capability or meaningful transfer to the hips. At that point it’s just there to keep the pack from jostling around if you jog or go into some bizarre position. I’m sure you already know this - but I wasn’t sure why you mentioned wearing that belt if you were carrying extra water.
