As a big guy 6’3” 280lbs once I discovered hammock camping and never went back. It’s hard enough, humping your gear all day and being sore from that to waking up the next day, not refreshed and in more pain and not wanting to hitthat day’s target. Yes, sometimes it’s hard to find good trees and there’s more to set up but with somebody with back pain and shoulder pain from a lifetime of contact sports it was a total game changer. It makes me wanna be outside longer and not looking forward to just getting back to the car and getting home to my bed.

If you havent tried them yet and are looking for a really comfortable hammock. I can't recommend the haven tent more. It's on the heavy side. Can't lie. BUT I am 100% serious when I say it's worth it.

I definitely side-sleep in my hammock. I don't take it often, though, as my dog comes with me and i prefer her with me but not "on" me 😋 So i use a tarp and ground sleep. With a mesh tent, if bugs are a risk.

Given the opportunity, I love sleeping in my hammock system. I get the best nights of sleep in various winter conditions. It was a bit of trial and error, but I would say no more than issues I've had getting a good night's sleep tent camping. I'm a side sleeper and I sleep perfectly fine on my side in the hammock. Appreciate you giving it a fair shot. There are many that just immediately shut it down.

Glad you got to experience the SHT! Have to say, the campsites are great, but I really struggled to find spots that worked with my Durston X-Mid 2. Might have been less stressful with a hammock.

I am taking a guess that you don't know each other but are aware of each other's channels at least. (I could be wrong on both guesses.) A collaboration video with Shug would be AWESOME! You each have very different styles, but I love watching you both. You both are open about having opinions, but seem nice and open-minded enough to probably get along. I'd love to see it, if you are able and willing to manage it. I'm hoping you will consider it.

So the hammock and tarp would replace my Zpacks Plexsolo and Xlite at about the same price, but would be 3 lbs heavier. I’m sure that’s a good trade for better sleep for some, but not for me. Great video.

If I hike to feel good but I feel miserable when I'm cold or wet, how can I not make sure I won't freeze or drown? It's not about surviving, it's about living, relaxing, winding down and recharging. And missing out on those values because I have to struggle with weather conditions is useless.

Awesome content, thanks. I find it odd he says that some hang the foot end a foot higher... I tend to hang the head end higher. the only reason I could think to hang the foot end higher would be to slow digestion and possibly be less likely to need to pee in the middle of the night. I hope you touch on ultralight bridge hammocks in the future. I couldn't get a good sleep in a gathered-end either but bridge hammocks are way more comfortable for me and my shoulders. I just need a little pillow under my knees to prevent hyperextension. Can't wait to see ultralight bridge hammocks continue to improve! Hum a little hummingbird song, how light can we go?

I guess the only down side to hammock camping, is that casual day hikers will totally report your rig to the park ranger services, because you left it up and they thought they found a UFO in the woods.

First modification I do to every tent is add lines for hanging gear, I hang my glasses, socks, ect. The other thing I do with glasses (camera lenses), is I pack Lens cleaning sachets in my daily food ration packs. Each day I clean my glasses (or camera lenses) with a fresh clean moistened wipe, after cleaning the important stuff with out scratching, I take the wipe (usually isopropyl) and clean the screen on my phone, watch, or anything else that needs a quick wipe. I highly recommend, even if they are a pair of super cheap online glasses, get a photocromatic lens. The world is seriously bright when you are doing something historical unnatural like hiking at high noon. Even if it’s overcast. And you might not realize you need sunglasses, but you will still get some protection. Especially if in the alpine.

I camped in tents for years - went through all the problems of trying to find a large enough clear and flat area to set up a tent, learning that all of the "advice" for how to set up a tent doesn't actually fit with the areas I camp in (the advice is more suited to a flat-ish open paddock than a heavily-wooded mountainside), put up with condensation on the inside of the tent, cramped conditions in which I needed to do strange contortions just to change my jersey without leaving the tent, crawled through mud into and out of the tent, waited for months for enough contiguous days of sunshine to dry out the ground enough to camp on, put up with terrible nights' sleep due to uneven or cold ground or because the ground slopes too much or in the wrong direction ("never lie across a slope, lie down the slope with your feet lower than your head" - stupid advice assumes that you get to choose which way the only clear tent-sized space you've seen n the last 2 hours is oriented). Then tried hammock camping and have no desire to go back to tent camping. The ground no longer matters, it can be uneven, steeply sloping in any direction it likes, stony, boggy, have an actual stream running through it or covered in thorny roots... as long as there are two suitable trees at a good distance and no tall underbrush. I can walk around under the tarp, change my clothes, keep more stuff under shelter, sit comfortably, sleep comfortably and warm. It's more spacious, I haven't had the condensation problems, I've got a far better view out around me ("porch mode" for the win), more flexibility in setups - and it takes less time to set up and put away than the average "dome tent with rain fly". Had no choice but go tent camping a couple of months ago because there were no trees to hang my hammock where we were allowed to camp... so I'm building a portable hammock stand to deal with places like that in future. 2 nights of rediscovering why I hate camping on the ground!

I love hammock camping. Around where I live, it is very hard to find a place that's flat enough for a tent. It's so hilly and bumpy. But with a hammock, I just need 2 trees and I'm set. But tents can be awesome too!

The real big plus for hammock around my area is the fact that it is quite hard to find a good flat spot on the ground but soooo easy to find two trees at the right distance. The main advantage I see to laying on the ground is low profile stealth camping. Even with camo hammock it still much more visible.

I wish you would have talked more about weight and bulk deference’s to your normal kit. I have heard mixed opinions on this. One advantage that I see is not having to worry about puncturing your sleeping pad. I appreciate your review, and I hope I don’t sound like I’m nitpicking your video. I think that you do an awesome job at what you do, and I appreciate you. 🙏🏻

I could be wrong, here's my 2 cents. As of 2015 when I was considering the concept of a hammock sleep system all the quilts, pads under quilts weight wise seemed more that if I slept on the ground. Then there's the finding 2 trees perfect distance apart.

For comfort there is literally no comparison. I own a $5k mattress - and my hammock is way more comfortable. Sleeping on the ground, is pure garbage. With a matt, garbage, with a blow up - cold garbage. Hammocks are annoying in their set up (trees, etc) but finished product hammock is FAR superior. We take 10 inch foam mattresses in a 4 man tent - wife loves that, fair enough.
