Was tickled when I found out you helped Ken Spriggs with his landing gear issue. Nice to see fellow modellers helping each other out, even if you might be competing with each other. Very inspiring.

Hi Lou. It's coming along beautifully. Inspired use of the ring light! 👍😁 I'm surprised that you didn't sand/diffuse the ceiling lights but I guess the ring light diffuser does a good enough job. I would be tempted to black prime the inside of the dome - with all that glow bouncing around it may be difficult to stop it showing through the hull with only exterior light blocking. Great idea for the power socket - just as long as you remember which nozzle it's hidden behind and don't end up breaking other ones off looking for it! 😳 Since it's being modeled as "landed" it might have been an option to do a landing pad diorama with a power umbilical. As regards the wires connecting the two halves you could have used a simple mini plug/socket pair to be able to separate them. Looking forward to the finale next week. 🙂

Im loving your build, Lou, but i think i see a painting error: on the outer rim you reversed the black & white checker boarding. I believe it’s the windows that get the black treatment not the ribbed areas. The black cowling make the view of space easier for the passenger to see from their seat; it acts like a mat and frame the view. Apologies, if I’m in error.
@aztekdummy2 жыл бұрын
technically none of that area is black, it's off white like the rest of the ship. I'll be painting over it with the blending coat the "black" comes from the window shapes themselves.
@ashlounge46942 жыл бұрын
Lou Dalmaso take a look at the shot of the Aries descending with the moon in the background. The lip of ship seems to have black areas under each window. Your version has the black lip areas under the ribbed sections *between* each window. Please tell me if i’m missing something
@aztekdummy2 жыл бұрын
Having seen the filming model pictures (pre restoration) none of the rim has a black area. I think what we're seeing is shadow from the harsh lighting used. The ribbed areas look darker because the texture gets lost in the shadows. The areas in front of the windows are shadowed by the recess of the window
@ashlounge46942 жыл бұрын
Lou Dalmaso at 1:07:22 of your video above, it seems like you have painted the ribbed sections of the ring black. In the film it’s the window sections that appear to be black and the ribbed sections white. (Thr opposite of what appears in your video) Weather the effect in the film is due to lighting or paint, i don’t know, but it seems to me that if the effect was due to lighting then we would not see the checker-boarding; the entire rim would be all black, no? PS: i have seen the filming miniature in person when it was being auctioned. Underneath the windows there’s some type of textured foil material that is darker in shade from the rest of the hull. The texturing could’ve trapped light, and appeared black when filmed in high contrast lighting. The Moebius model is also missing ribbing in front of the windows that was present on the studio model. This could cause confusion.
@ashlounge46942 жыл бұрын
I spent about an hour this afternoon talking to adam johnson and asked him about this issue. He confirmed that indeed underneath the windows the lip surface was painted black. The idea behind this was if it was painted white, like the rest of the ship sunlight would reflect back into the eyes of passengers.

Lou, I'm sort of new to watching your stuff. I see you use lots of epoxies and CA glue for gluing your lighting and some clear parts onto your models. Have you ever tried "UV clear glue"? It's handy for gluing and making small clear parts for openings.

I have. I use it from time to time, I find it a little messy still.

I am flabbergasted that there were no Floyds, stews or pilots. How much extra trouble would that have been? So now it is a soul-less artifact. Still a fabulously beautiful one. There's probably going to be a 3D printed set of figures out there, or even by now. Your lighting solutions have finished up (so far) as spectacular-- doing near ideal justice to the original set. The nesting rings and donuts of the passenger compartment are an interesting model manufacturer's and modeler's on-going struggle. Fascinating. A mild query: why did you not scrape away some paint under those "Zero Gravity" warning lights? Seems too easy to take advantage of the above-ceiling lighting. But what's sealed away is sealed away! Just wondering. Love it, Lou-- you're doing your usual thoughtful and cautious build. We've all waited a lifetime for this thing-- this one is in good hands.

Lighting questions. The selfie ring in the upper dome seems like a great idea. Isn’t is 5v? Are the strip LEDs for the stairs also 5v? If not, how did you get them all to function from a single power source; and where did you end up placing the ring’s dimmer controls/transformers? Or did you end up chucking the ring and using standard leds for the passenger overheads? Thanks for all that you do for our community.
@aztekdummy2 жыл бұрын
I can use a 9v to USB adapter to get the right voltage. My plan is to set the controls one time then bury the them in the dome. That's the plan anyways.
@ashlounge46942 жыл бұрын
Lou Dalmaso i will be interested to see how the weight of the adapter and dimmer controls effects the stress on the legs. Please let us know and thanks again for leading the path. The box cover says “for ages 15 and up.” If you ask me any 15 year old that can put this together will soon be working on a real one. Lol 😂

the iron texture went on a little heavy. I'd recommend the trunk paint, even if you have to paint black over it.

Surprised you didn't mention the mold/seam lines on the dome as IMO there are the only real problem with the kit. Or maybe you had a kit from a better batch.

there are no lines on the dome that shouldn't be there. even what you call a mold line is present on the filming model

@@aztekdummy I must be unlucky - mine has a definite 'ridge' for the lower four quarters in between the plating and a circular one just above the lower plating you can feel with your fingernail. And I can't see them on the A-1B- GKFX filming miniature photos that are on line. But regardless enjoying the build - with the carpeting - would the approach you took to the Elvira couch work at this scale or just some 1mm dolls house rug?
