Brian Johnson worked on both series in modeling / special effects. Space 1999 and 2001 so similarities will show up.

I also had Adam's Atomic City kit but found areas around the feet and the brass tubing to have problems. I didn't mind the clean up and puttying. I had terrible luck, though, and an unused iron laundry sink that was only used for storage where I kept the 1/4 built Aries while I searched for tubing started filling with clog water from the kitchen sink, then worse, draino water was backing into that sink without us knowing it. I had to toss everything that was stored in it. Now I know what the b stood for.

Just watched "2001, a Space Odessey" yesterday. I remember going with my dad to the movie theater and watching this movie back in the day when it first released (telling my age now). You've motivated me to think I should now build all the fantastic models from this movie. Great video and job building the model. Thanks! Eric

Hi Lou. Love your builds mate, hours of enjoyment. Regarding Sprue Letters. My eyesight isn't what it used to be, so I use masking tape to make a label tag for each sprue. I then take a sharpie and write a large A, B..C or whatever it is on the label.. This has saved me hours over the years. I can see which sprue it is without having to go hunting and squinting.

Goodness, every time you had it sitting on its legs the creaking made me flinch, I don’t know if the camera was making it sound worse than it was but it sounded like those legs were just not very stable at all.

Hi Lou. Great news on the health front 👍 Nice little clip of ELO. A DJ over here in the UK used to call it "Hump day Wednesday" on the grounds that once you are over it the rest of the week is downhill! I think you'll find the "little engine bells" are called the RCS - Reaction Control System and have been on space vehicles since long before 2001 or 1999. Love spotting your little movie quotes and paraphrases but you missed an opportunity - "Damn dirty engines"! Looks like a really nice kit and being able to lift the top off would be cool but I think it's too impractical especially if the ceiling is going to be lit. As always, looking forward to next week 👍😁

$225?! Ouch! That hurts. I loved the ship design. But it's big with the interior! A 1/72 $100 version would be nice... That's out of many people's price range. :( But overall, its a LOT of model for that price! The side door as its own part is GREAT. That means the 3rd party market can make an internal room!

Expecting a lot from this kit -- and you! Quite a lot given. We've been waiting a lo-o-ong time for this. Too bad the price point has to be so high-- some of it is understandable. The model producing community seems to have needed to go through some evolution before it was ready to produce such a large and complex, thick-and-thin sort of arrangement. Fascinating to see how much engineering went into all the moving parts. And-- that you kept them moving. Very much looking forward to next week's installment.

Well, this means that we only need two more kits to complete 2001. The space station with a tiny shuttle. And a 4(?) pack of the other space craft shown at the beginning of 2001. The 2010 Lenov would be nice too, scaled with Discovery.

Lou, Regarding the weight issue...depending on the base you choose, maybe a small metal rod up thru the center of the base into the bottom of Aries. Just enough to relieve weight on the gear. Toothpick size would do it. Hide it in a puff of thruster smoke :)

on the AJA resin kit, I hid a small clear acrylic block in between the legs and the ship mostly rests on it. and it's almost impossible to see once the legs are down.

I have the model, waiting to see you do it, waiting to get good enough to tackle it. Thinking I would glue the landing gear extended - not mess with the wiggliness of it - or those locking tabs. Mine will be sitting on a scratch-built landing pad anyway, not in-flight.

I still say the best use for this big ol model is to use it as a base for a table lamp, Ya can run the tube for the wiring right up thru the center elevator.. Only thing needed then would be to find a small 2001 a Space Odyssey themed lamp shade :)

Just looking at the model from a "real life" point of view, I'd suggest that there isnt actually enough space for the fuel needed for Trans Lunar injection, launch from the Moon and the then the Trans Earth Orbit injection burns. It would be interesting to know what the technical input was on the original model build.

Even the Apollo programs LEM had 4 extendable legs. Though it only had to cycle them once. It’s implied, but not shown, that like the Orion Space Plane, it needed to fit inside Space Station V (at the other, unfinished side) so a more compact profile might be necessary.
