The use of a 1/4” jack to run power, And suspend the model, was an Inspired choice! I was imagining a slowly tangling length of wire building up as the piece moved!! If you continue having issues with the rotation stalling, I would consider adding something around the Station Model Itself to increase friction, and therefore gripping action. My mind goes to things like a second rubberized ring (rubber band?) to a glued and painted rough material like a single length of string, to even some texturized paintable medium I may not be aware of, though my mind goes to something like ModPodge and sand… Outstanding Work! Your mounting really pushed it over the Top!

Superb build and imagination. Of course I think most of us would like to see it lit to bring out the surface as much as possible...maybe just a flashlight would do that. Otherwise, I'd be tempted to do a light blackwash.

That’s a great build. Using a 1/4” jack as an axle is a genius idea. I was looking for a similar solution last year to make my Vader TIE Advanced look like it’s spinning out of control and thought the only way was a slip ring but this would have been much simpler and cheaper. The advantage I have with a slip ring is that I could run the motor spindle through the middle so I can have the TIE on a stick, but for your build I like that the motor is adding some extra support for the model.

Just an idea if no one else has suggested. Why not turn the clipper around and attach the fiber optic to its rear. This would depict the image on the original movie poster. The clipper would then be departing from the station.

I was thinking of putting a shaft up through the "rear" docking bay into the hub, connected directly to the motor, with the power jack on the end, this preserving the bay for the red construction lighting and a tiny Aries inside, and also allowing the model to be removed to show off hand held. The shaft going into the hub would also help support the weight of the model. I think the motor should go just a little bit faster. Not much, mind you, but just a bit. But I gotta say, that should work perfectly for a side project of mine: always wanted to build a replica of the moire pattern screen at Spock's station on the Enterprise. Already have an old round fan housing the same size; now only need the slow motor and the moire pattern films. I can make the films, but where do you get the motors? Sometimes you need to give us more details, Lou. Anyway, another great build, and now I need to start working on mine, and the dozen other things I m working on! By the way, I chose Rustoleum 2X satin Apple Red for the "girders" on the construction ring, which I will spray with Dullcoat, to give it that launch gantry/building girder look, like it looks in the movie to me. Would've gotten flat, but they only had satin and gloss. Have a better one!

An excellent solution to rotating the station. I am surprised there were no matching rubber wheels for the drive fitting. Cutting something is less than optimal, but time will tell. I recommend using fine grit sandpaper for the wheel-- easy to paint-- and very frictiony. The ONLY thing Lange and Oberg seemed to have overlooked was the need for a work arm. Aligning the shuttle to the rotating station sounds like a pilot's day-mare! All very nice, Lou-- You didn't mention how you found the gear motor; y'know, the search terms that landed there.

Very nice build, Lou. Have you considered a correct size rubberband around the back hull of the station to increase the friction on the gasket? You can always use a magic marker on it to make it the right color.
@aztekdummy6 ай бұрын
@@David_B_Dornburg that was on one of the trial steps, but I found I didn't need it all the way around, only on certain places, so I added shims of plastic just where needed and I could paint those the hull color.

Great stuff again! How about a wide and short rubber band on the outside of the pinch roller, or maybe a big bit of heat shrink tubing slightly grippy and not too thick. We see the inside of the space station windows, and also the inside of the Space Clipper windows. Comparing the two, does the clipper seem to be a bit small in comparison to the station?

In case someone hasn't already mentioned it, your moving power delivery could have also been accomplished with a "slip ring". I realize that your model isn't expected to run for days at a time, but a slip ring easily could and with many more wires.

A couple of suggestions: 1. Reverse the PanAm Clipper and paint the rod yellow so it looks like the album cover picture. 2. Reduce the jack in the rear to 1/8". Glue the female end in the rear of the (back) docking bay, and attach the male end to a deeper (rectangular) and rotatable connection into the rear docking bay. That way, if you pull the model away from the jack, the rear of the space station looks mostly unaffected and the lighting work non-obvious.

Only thing I have to say, way too late, is that this is where a spare parts box full of tape recorder parts would have come in handy. Rubber drive wheels and belts and whatnot are literally designed for this kind of thing. A rubber drive wheel on the motor and a rubber belt on the station would preclude any possibility of slip. Maybe next build?
