The Bane of all model builders...the weather. When it's bad we can't get our painting done but when it's good we want to walk away from the bench and go outside. Of course us Californian modelers currently with the heatwave a raging we have no problem staying inside. We've had a break this last week, it's only been in the upper 90s, so hopefully that will continue for your trip over here. Have a safe trip Lou.

You're very skilled at doing these builds, so kudos to you! If I were to ever win a billion dollars from the lottery, one thing I'd love to do would be to hire some talented engineers and build a full-size mock up of this ship. The interior design has made it my all-time favorite fictional spacecraft, and it'd be cool to have my own personal copy of it in a warehouse or huge garage! Again, you do great work -- the kit looks great. Have a nice trip to the coast!

It seems like a few feet of undefined 'cargo area' between the cabin and the rear of the ship is all you really need to rectify most of the issues with the design… I think your model is Awesome! Like the perfect playset from long grown dreams!

From the script: "The cabin is neither cramped nor spacious, but it is about the size of the President's cabin in Air Force One. In the immediate f.g. is a console of dials and switches flanked by four chairs. Only one of the chairs is occupied. the astronaut's back is to CAMERA. There is a ladder amidships which leads to an escape hatch. The after Dart of the cabin is obscured in darkness." It says in the script that the ship traveled faster than the speed of light. The time on board the ship is shorter relative to real-time. It didn't need to carry a lot of life support. TY for the video.

Yet another fantastic looking kit, there is a photo of a similar kit, with the escape hatch open, and the D in United is split just like your, personally I like that idea makes it look more realistic. Have a nice vacation with uncle Phil!

Lou, I love your builds. I truly look forward to Fridays. Watching your builds tops my week No matter how bad they get from work. Knowing you are there on a Friday, brightens my day. I can't wait to see you start the 650 scale Enterprise D. You need to also build the 650 Original Enterprise and the 650 Refit to go with it so people can get a sense of scale. Going to be an awesome series to watch. Have a safe trip and enjoy your time, I will be watching Phil's channel to see if I get a peek at you tinkering away.

Great, looking for build Lou. I have bought Icarus from Gambody, but have yet to print it. This gives me great ideas for that build. Have fun with Phil. I’ve been watching his building and it looks pretty awesome. I can hear him now saying “the great Lou Dalmaso”. 😂

You have to assume that the Icarus was attached to a larger section that had the propulsion for traveling near light speed. The Icarus was the command module and for entry and landing. It's engines were probably for the deorbit burn.
@angelohernandez6060
@angelohernandez6060 5 ай бұрын
Boy you weren't kidding when you said Fox didn't really think this design out. There was no room for working parts on this section of the Icarus. It was all cabin and cryobeds. But I guess the important part was it looked good.

Yes, the engine bells don’t make sense from a design perspective. But, you never see the rear of the ship in the movie as it is submerged.

It's too bad that Moebius has not chosen to do the Icarus. After their Galileo and Proteus, they gave us a couple of the most wanted kits from the 60s. The Icarus would be the 3rd of the great never-produced kits from that time.

Great stuff. Wasn't Stuart in the top bunk in the movie? I always assumed that the 'Liberty 1' (Icarus) was just the front of a bigger vehicle that was left in orbit. The early production paintings show more ship with a large fin, that carries a tank for exploring. The rocket nozzles to the rear are not seen in the movie, and the movie sort of suggests that there is more ship under the water, even though the set piece is shorter than the suggested ship. In order for the nose to be up in the air there logically should be at least as much ship again under the water.
@aztekdummy
@aztekdummy 5 ай бұрын
except that during the whole opening, there is never a planet or stars shown, just the lightshow of the "Hasslien Curve" effect. The landing is depicted as an unexpected crash of the whole ship, no neat separation from a larger craft. Like i said, the ship design wasn't thought out for any more than the immediate story needs. If you are going to apply NASA tech of the day to it, than you could also assume that it was only designed for water landings like an apollo capsule and there were parachutes in the nosecone that failed to deploy. All fun things to think about, but you have to go with what the writers wrote

@@portland-182 well it looked like a non programmed crash to me. I would assume the crew would be awakened for landing. And you can't use anything from a sequel as a retroactive fact regarding the original. The landing in the second movie, as lovely as it was, is irrelevant to the original movie.

I see that about the engine bells. It's like glass packs on a car exhaust they make your wimpy car sound cooler but other than that usless and stupid. Hollywood spacecraft was all about how cool it looks. Not feasibility. But as scifi readers and fans it's fun to think of how it might work sometimes.

not yet. Remember, Taylor is still recording his final entry. we don't know how long he was in cryo before the crash landing . Certainly long enough to grow the beard, so the malfunction could have happened anytime within those weeks.

Dear Joint Jostler-- I know through the magic of video time and space, you're already at Phil's and working hard-- but shouldn't you video all your trip? Like a good KZbinr and influencer, show us your skin care as you walk through the airport, etc.! The Icarus is a beautiful design-- but like any spaceship model from back in the day, the inside and outside will always be at odds (the Proteus notwithstanding!). But to the questioners who worry about such things as gigantic engine bells sticking out from a 10" thick bulkhead... how does the Icarus land? Then, after you toss up the idea of an X-15 skid landing, consider the APU of the Space Shuttle. Their volume is really close to those side-saddle shapes. (Maybe called "chines"?) I'd stuff those full of fuel tanks! shouldn't the nay-sayers be more concerned about the data storage? I would be... But the backroom boys decided they had to show something, dammit! If the Jupiter II can get to Alpha Centauri on tape drives, that's good enough for me. A beautiful ship for what it is. And it isn't what it isn't... But what your model is, Lou, is pretty darn nice. I remember when that kit came out and I wondered, then let too much time slide by. But you have done a perfectly reasonable job considering the client's needs. Looks quite good. I hope we gat a chance to see some glam shots. I still would have liked some lighting-- well, a lot of lighting. That interior did have the whole Hollywood glamour lighting!
