Retired at age 53, I am in my early 60s. Because they couldn't understand the idea of not working if you don't have to, many individuals resisted me. I viewed my life in phases. In my latter years, I owe it to myself to "stop and smell the roses," even if I have worked hard to get everything I have now. My situation is that I retired and moved to Latin America. It made it possible for me to enjoy my new surroundings while escaping all the bad things that were going on in America. None of the people I've met regret retiring.

Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

I’m 70. Retired at 64 after 42 years as a nurse. I started preparing my body for aging when I was in my 30’s. I read that the single greatest reason that women enter a nursing home is not stroke, or cardiovascular disease or dementias. It’s loss of mobility. That affected my dedication to health and wellness. I am aging quite well. Take no medications,no illness so far. There are no guarantees, but I am controlling what I can. And God, I LOVE retirement!!!

I'm loving retirement too. Very good info. I am over 70 and my biggest fear is loss of mobility leading to loss of the ability to be active leading to issues related to that inactivity. I try to do about 5 hours of dedicated exercise a week always park in the south 40 when going shopping and do a lot of outside and inside DIY work at home. This inevitably leads to injuries every now and then. Scares me every time. I go to Physio and beg them to tell me I can recover because I know if I can't it's gonna be bad news.

The “average” American over 60 is a collection of poor choices made earlier in life, sadly. Poor financial decisions and overweight due mainly to processed foods. Then they desperately try to counteract the result of poor nutrition through expensive medications instead of finding the root cause and fixing that (almost certainly frankenfood diets). Do your best to not be an “average” American. Hey, I am not saying this as though I am superior. I’ve made plenty of mistakes in the past that are affecting me at 65, so don’t take it as if I’m talking down to anyone.

And sadly, Drs don’t try and fix people. They just prescribe pills. I was talking with my neighbor the other day. Her husband who is 77 gets sick almost twice a month. Didn't matter that I had gone way beyond the call of duty, that I was the first to have developed a website for our department that would save money and time in two major ways, that I was loyal, hard working and did an excellent job. Do the research on how to get your brain into a delta state. Never sleep in a quiet room, use loud white noise to reduce brainwave activity, keep the room as cool as you can stand it. As unromantic as it sounds, sleep in separate beds. A simple touch pulls you right out of deep sleep.

I retired at 51 after a 30 year career when my dad passed away. I did this in order to take care of my home bound ill mother. This was about 5 years earlier than I planned. I took care of her for about 5 years before it got beyond my skill set and I had to place her in a nursing home. She lasted about 4 years until passing away in October 2024. I’ll be 59 in March and I need knee and shoulder surgery. I’m in constant pain. Taking care of my mother was the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. I opened a family Thrift Store once she was placed in the nursing home because I wanted to work and I needed a purpose in life. I have a pension, TSP and good Health insurance. I should have taken better care of myself over the years. I’m just trying to make it to 62 right now for Social Security so when I’m gone my wife can draw on mine which is much higher than hers. He was maybe 58-60 when that happened. He did retire maybe a year or 2 later but he’s doing great today. Even took a job as a maintenance man in a Mall . That’s where I ran into him and he said he got it just for something to do, and I asked him well what do you do, he said, nothing. 😂 I seen him from across the way as me and my wife were shopping and he was leaning on his knee talking to another guy for about 30 minutes all relaxed and stuff, it was funny honestly. I retired at age 53 after 36 years of service. I receive a pension immediately and at 62 claimed my social security. I have a 401K that I currently haven't had to touch. I live off my pension, save my SS. The steady pension of almost 14 years now is my peace of mind which definitely helps my mental health. Not having debt when I retired played a critical role. My life now is very spontaneous. I exercise daily, eat well and can say that life has been good to me. My mom would say " what you don't accomplish in your youth will be very difficult to attain when you get old".

David is right- genetically I have a scary hand dealt maternally and some serious concerns paternally. I also had the typical high stress poor exercise and weight gain in my mid 20s to late 40s that is common for working Moms. BUT I ate reasonably healthy after a healthy childhood, had no addictions or abuse, and did not party etc. And when the big stresses resolved, I had the freedom to focus on my own life again, guess what? I got happy, relaxed, and began losing weight and gaining fitness just by being active outdoors. After 4 months of just drinking more water and simple walking about after getting my garden into shape the weight started to fall off, my metabolism shot up, and my sleep improved too. Within 6 more months I had to add in bigger meals to keep my weight where I looked good vs too skinny! I did literally age backwards- my local doctor was astounded by my medical records from 48 to 50, said my benchmarks had gone from typical to early 30s in everything from blood testing to skin tone. My eyesight improved even. My body looked like me at 17! My hair got thicker and healthy, my minor aches and lethargy vanished, my flexibility and muscle strength was astonishing. And I routinely had to argue with interested much younger guys about my age, then laugh at their insistence after that I must have had expensive surgeries done etc since no signs of it. Nah. Just simple steps and happy in my life. I am now 64.5, don't walk as much so a bit more curves, and working just to keep busy and grow the nestegg- in an interesting job that requires lifting bulky 25-50# regularly, being mentally on it constantly, driving in challenging conditions, and hustling often. Other than gravity finally impacting my jawline and the skin on the top of my hands thinning and a touch of grey hairs in the blonde again I am doing great. And while the age of interested guys has gone up to late 30s or older now, rather than 20s to mid 30s in my 50s lol, absolutely none of them believe me when I openly say my age. Exactly zero occurrence of all familial health risks, and I and my kids/grandkids are the ONLY ones in 5+ generations back and 3 forwards in every extended member to not have any. I sincerely believe continuing healthy childhood eating and lifestyle habits for myself and instilling the same in my kids paid off in giving our genetics the weapons to fight back the bad genes and keep them inactive. But I spent 25 years neglecting my own weight and stress levels and not taking care of myself generally other than above- and still dramatically improved my health and energy and life at age 50 with minimal effort and virtually zero cost. I fully expect I will be active and healthy well into my 70s at minimum and probably much older- because I haven't let myself atrophy and fossilize mentally or physically. Go seize your life back!

@@requinremembers I like to design and build things. I have a wood and metal work shop. Currently I am finishing an ATV with a full suspension, hydraulic brakes transmission, Roll cage etc. Last summer I built a 14 foot Jon boat to use around the boat dock. I'm also building a cabinet for my wife to use in the laundry room and a replica of an antique sail boom to decorate the new home we are building. I also designed the house. Once we move in I will start construction on a 3/4 scale replica of a model T bucket hot rod. Some of the sub assemblies are already built. We also like to fish and catch crabs from the dock. We grow some veggies in raised beds and finally I used to make moonshine in a hobby still. It's an interesting blend of artistry and chemistry. I'm not sure this counts as a hobby, but we have an RV in which we have traveled coast to coast twice, with many side trips along the way and a 4wd ATV on a trailer we use for surf fishing.

I had a mini stroke at age 61. Fully recovered, i am in decent health as i never drank or smoked, but didnt eat well during my working years. I Retired at 63. Not regretting it in the least. One good thing about retiring early is it allows you to focus more on your health. If I had worked to full retirement age, the extra money I made would have probably gone to medical expenses from my health degrading working those extra years. My advice, as soon as you retire start exercising. I am now 65, bike around 40 miles a week and walk, and try to swim a lot. I feel good. If I had kept working I would probably be dead.
