On a complete side-note, that little bit at the beginning is eerily similar, but completely opposite to what happened with Prinz Eugen and Bismarck at the Battle of Denmark Strait. Bismarck was in the lead first, but whilst hiding in fog they switched position (due to engine trouble on Bismarck), so Prinz Eugen was now in the lead. When Prince of Wales and Hood engaged them, Hood didn't realize that they had swapped positions in the meantime and so spent her time firing at Prinz Eugen, thinking that she was Bismarck.

Didn't the Prinz Eugen and Bismarck swapped positions way earlier when the Norfolk engaged the Bismarck by accident and the Bismarck fired, knocking out her own Radar in the Process? I am pretty Sure that the Last Information that were given to the Hood and PoW was that Bismarck was in Lead and Eugen following, and when they arrived the Hood fired at the Leadship, which was Eugen due to the Swap of Position. Then In the following battle the HMS Hood Took a blow from Eugen and then the probably most lucky highly destructive Hit from Bismarck to one of Hoods Storages for the Main guns Ammunition or were the Gunpowder charges were Stored. PoW in the Meantime was heavily crippled to the point of not being able to continue the fight, while every other useless HMS Ship just stood in Horror.

@@TheRealJohnux Yes, the swap was in fact due to her radar malfunctioning, not the engine. Mistake on my part. It is a bit unfair to state that "PoW in the Meantime was heavily crippled to the point of not being able to continue the fight, while every other useless HMS Ship just stood in Horror." Suffolk and Norfolk weren't close enough to do anything anyway and PoW took fairly light damage all things considered. She was hit 7 times (4 by Bismarck, 3 by Prinz Eugen) and only one of those caused noticeable, though not severe damage, which was the hit to her bridge. PoW mainly had problems with a lot of her guns malfunctioning, but she hadn't taken any serious damage, especially compared to the Bismarck, which had received major hits to her bow fuel supply and engine room, slowing her down, removing large parts of her fuel storage and causing her to release a huge oil slick. Captain Leach was later accused of fleeing in the face of the enemy, which he vehemently denied, going so far as to demand a court martial, so that the issue could be properly analyzed and his name cleared. It wasn't pursued any further... It's also fairly obvious from what happened afterwards. After PoW disengaged she joined the search/track efforts and engaged Bismarck twice more later in the day, whenever they got close enough. Though after that only 6 of her guns were still working. It wasn't until another half day of searching that PoW returned to port.

@@Tepid24 Alright, I exaggerated a little on the crippling Part, half the Crippling was done by herself as you stated. But still, the Suffolk and Norfolk couldn't do shit against the Bismarck as their mainguns weren't enough to penetrate her armor. And altough it is true that the Bismarck was inflicted heavy damages, she still outran the British for the most part and could have sank the PoW aswell if it wasn't for the Oil leak and strict instructions not to Engage other battleships if possible. In the End the Arc Royal was lucky to have Planes too shitty for the Bismarcks Highly advanced AA to properly work, and to actually Hit the Rudder.

@@TheRealJohnux Suffolk and Norfolk weren't there to threaten the Bismarck anyway. They were more than good enough to keep them spotted from a safe distance with their good radar sets and give Prinz Eugen a run for her money once the BBs were done. It should also be noted that because of Bismarck's distributed armor scheme, they could penetrate the upper belt, between the weather deck and the main deck, which they did multiple times in her last stand, causing a lot of damage. Due to the damage she received she was temporarily slower than PoW (and obviously slower than Norfolk and Suffolk). I mean she *could've* sunk the PoW, but the same can be said in return. Neither were willing to risk another engagement after the Denmark Strait and were fully content to occasionally shoot at each other from 20km away. It should be noted that Lütjens apparently didn't have too much respect for his orders to avoid engaging the enemy as he'd already been under that order when he accepted Hood's and PoW's engagement. But afterwards he was no longer willing to risk it, which should tell us a lot about how confident he was in his ability to take out PoW at that point. I do find that argument really weird that Bismarck's AA can somehow be "highly advanced" and too shitty to hit some canvas biplanes at the same time. Her AA wasn't particularly good. She didn't have a unified heavy AA/secondary dual purpose array. Her 105mm mounts were not unified and both variants weren't particularly good at being AA mounts anyway. Her small guns didn't have the stopping power to take out a Swordfish from a safe range. Her AA was highly advanced for a ship that was practically built as a continuation of WW1 standards, but she couldn't hold a candle to something that actually had excellent AA like the US and British battleships, with their heavy DP arrays and incessant number of 40mm Bofors.
