It's incredible to believe that Hollywood star, Arthur Kennedy, is a top ranked B-17 flight instructor; but then we also have Mister Slow Drawl himself, James Stewart, super actor par excellence, before and after WWII. Maybe it is not so strange after all because we humans are a versatile bunch. Well, thank the Good Lord that these guys fought and won the war, so that we can live free in this country, which my great great grand parents helped build and defend. We salut you all. Nine cylinder single row air cooled radials. Heavy Bombardment, four engine. Right Cyclone 1820 exhaust turbine type manifold pressure boost in addition to engine driven centrifugal blower. To allow high altitude performance.

This guy says you should always take off in 3 point attitude. Meanwhile the war era manual states clearly that 3 point take offs are only for emergencies, and normal take off should be done in tail low 2-point attiude. Wonder why.

When they refer to "Turbos", I assume they're talking about tubro-chargers? And the ability to turn them on/off - does that basically constitute what is known as War Emergency Power? I'm no expert, just curious! :)
@nickjervis81236 жыл бұрын
Etienne Le Roux No. War emergency power relates to the exceeded recommended manifold pressure at sea level. When the aircraft is at altitude air pressure in lbs per square inch or inches of mercury is quite low and the turbos can operate as designed. At sea level waste gates are used to dump pressure to prevent overreving. If the waste gate is disengaged at sea level this is war emergency power.

I believe most of the Hollywood actor, non-pilots used the pant method - and only on the sound stage. That type in real life would likely be washed out before reaching that stage.

My boss / flight instructor way back when was a B17 capt, flew his 25 missions, and then instructed, retired as a Colonel after decades in reserves. Based upon the number of failures he talked about catching during pre-takeoff check, my best guess is they probably did. This video is fascinating... I can still hear his mannerisms, which I suspected were from back then, now I know.
