Always nice seeing these beauties fly out by rapid city.

There have not been any takeoffs of b1s here at Nellis in several months but I believe the runway is 23. This means they have to do a 180 almost immediately and head north in order to avoid McCarren traffic. So they come over my hood at low altitude and they sound like rolling thunder, shakes my house. As soon as they go over you can see the engine burners glowing. I don't know if they are afterburners or not but at night you can see them for a long way. What I really love seeing are the B2s. Like a giant black bat just hanging in the air and fairly quiet. I have not seen those here for several years.

are these control surfaces checks coordinated between the crews on the frequency ? All simultaneously... Perhaps the second can visually check the first?? Quite nice ;-)

I miss andersen. The fenceline to the WSA is gone and the alarm tower...(whiskey control) is gone. Things you notice in the background.

I worked the ECP at Bentwaters, UK. Whiskey 1 was the tower, 2 the Alt CSC, 3 was the ECP, and so forth. Coming up on 40 years ago, but I still remember it,

6:01 I didn't know that the B1's elevators were elevons. Interesting!
@Nilguiri4 жыл бұрын
@Fareast Oracle Ah, thanks. How are the left and right elevators used separately? Do you mean that the pilots, or more likely the fly by wire flight control computer, commands the elevators separately from the spoilers? On closer examination of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bl7aoKeentWqnpo I've noticed when it is being refuelled in-flight the elevators seem to be continuously moving independently quite vigorously, as you mentioned. I had never noticed that before and it is fascinating. Maybe it is to make fine roll adjustments without having to use the spoilers? What is gained by allowing then to move independently rather than like a regular elevon, apart from redundancy? If it were just redundancy, why do they move independently under normal operating conditions like in the refuelling video? Additionally, and it may be my imagination or the way that the shadows move, but at 6:01 again, when it is commanded to roll left, the entire horizontal control surface seems to be tilting to the right, something that is not noticeable in the refuelling video I linked to, so it looks like it may well be an optical effect and adding that extra degree of freedom would probably not be necessary and would add unnecessary complexity to the whole tail assembly. Or does it really do that? I wonder if you would mind explaining what is going on exactly and how it all works, if you gave time! I've done a quick bit of Googling and can't find anything specifically about it. Much obliged, thanks!

@@Nilguiri the B-1 does not have standard ailerons with which to control roll. in normal flight, the pilot controls roll with spoilers. the reason that the rear elevator can split asymmetrically, is because of how the aircraft is configured during supersonic flight. when the wings are swept back, the spoilers are no longer in a good position to control roll. they are also not strong enough to raise under supersonic winds. to control roll during these conditions, the rear elevator splits asymmetrically. it can also be used for redundancy.

Base commanders should let the crews paint nose art on the B1, B52 bombers and air to air fuel tankers planes, just like they did in WW2. That would be cool. Maybe reuse some of the more famous nose art and names with a " 2 " added after the name. Use the names of the 8th Air Forces B17s that completed their 25 missions over Nazi Germany during WW2. Do it to remember the greatest generation and honours the planes and men that give it all for freedom!

We had nose art at dyess. The star of abilene was the first to arrive on base and the one that had to land at edwards with no nose gear was Excalibur. They all had nose art.
