During the actual raid, they actually didn't even have their guns on them. If I'm not mistaken, they took them out and used broomsticks that they painted black because they took a lot of stuff off of those bombers to make them light enough to be able to take off the Carrier deck.
@davidcovarubias4729
@davidcovarubias4729 7 ай бұрын
You are wrong. The aircraft carried all machine guns they were issued. 2 .50 caliber machine guns in the upper turret. A single .50 caliber machine gun in the nose which the bombardier (not a gunner) manned. These early model B-25's did not have tail guns so the Doolittle crews installed broomsticks in the clear tail blisters to hopefully prevent any Japanese fighters to attack them from the rear.

@@davidcovarubias4729 thanks for the correction I don't know much about this raid I thought they had taken off all the guns as part of the process. They did to make them light enough to go up into the air from the carrier

You are very welcome. Later B-25 models had a tail gun station with twin .50 caliber machine guns.@@ClancyWoodard-yw6tg

@@davidcovarubias4729 You neglected to say the ventral turret was removed and the opening that was created, covered with a plate. These aircraft also had an extra fuel tank located in the bomb bay. The tail blister was never a gunner's position. It was originally designed solely for observation with a crew member lying prone. You are correct in stating that broom sticks, painted black, were fitted to these aircraft to deter attacks from the rear by Japanese fighters.
@davidcovarubias4729
@davidcovarubias4729 6 ай бұрын
@@markfranks1329 The ventral gun turrets were found to be ineffective and were removed from all B-25's that had them. They were no longer being installed at the factory and squadrons that had them removed the turrets from their aircraft. As far as I know all 16 of the Dolittle B-25's left the factory without these ventral turrets. I have seen no mention of these turrets in any documentation about the Dolittle raid so I believe that I am correct in this subject. These turrets were only installed on early B and C model aircraft. You are correct about the tail blisters on early B-25's. I believe the J model was the first type to have a tail gun position with twin fifties. I think the 16 Dolittle B-25's were C models.

During the Dolittle ride, they actually had broomsticks instead of guns so that way they could look like they had gun, and that would scare the Japanese the guns the real guns that I mean, were actually removed by the way I love your videos😅

The Doolittle B-25Bs had the forward .50 cal gun replaced by a .30 cal to save weight. The "forward gunner" you're talking about was the bombardier. The tail guns were actually wooden dowels or broomstick handles meant to look like guns.

The B-25B did not have a tail gunner but it did have a 30 caliber gun placement port in the nose. Its crew consisted of a pilot, copilot, bombardier, and engineer-top turret gunner. The Doolittle raid added a navigator so the blue patch on the top you pointed to would have been the added glass cone for the navigator to take star shots for navigation. They cut the cone part of the tail section and put in two cut off broomsticks that were painted black to look like two 50 caliber machine guns. I recommend watching the 1944 movie Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo with Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson as the leading characters.

The late C.V. Glines was the Raiders’ official historian. He was also one of few honorary members of the group. His book “ Doolittle’s Tokyo Raiders” was published in the early ‘60s. It is very good, as is “The Doolittle Raid”. The latest on the raid is James Scott’s “Target Tokyo”, which is very comprehensive. There was an earlier, smaller “Target Tokyo” by James Merrill in 1964. I wasn’t very impressed with Craig Nelson’s “The First Heroes”. He kept calling the B-25s “B”. But it’s worth a glance because of the uniqueness of the event. I don’t know if Nelson was an aviator, but Glines was.

Looks pretty nice. To clarify: Doolittle's planes went into action with only Two .50 cal. Browning guns in the turret and one .30 cal. Browning the nose. The bottom turret guns were removed for the mission and in the tail they installed painted broomsticks to fake a set of tail guns that were bolted in solid! (originally there were NONE!!!) The blue tab is were the plexi-dome was for navigation, not sure why it's not there. Each plane had a crew of 5: Pilot, Co-pilot, Navigator/radio operator, Bombardier (also front gunner) Turret gunner. Watch "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" (Spencer Tracy & Van Johnson) for a good approximation of Ted Lawson's experience. BTW the flight scene with black smoke is an oil fire over Oakland that they sent up a plane to take additional footage flown by Paul Mantz, this added a lot to the credibility to their Tokyo bombing run.

Nice looking model, the crew is amazing for this size scale. Overall the model could represent the early B-25' s. The Hornet was spotted early by Japanese fishing boats , 200 miles before primary take off point. Because of that everything not need was taken out to lighten up the aircraft for additional cans of fuel. So the tail gun was removed and replaced by black painted broom sticks the nose gun was removed but that's where the navigator / bombardier was. That little blue spot is where a glass dome was that was used for navigation. Great stand to display. Now I just have to cut my beer money again to get one of these :-) Good to see you again, Cheers till the next one.

true the Japanese didn't know that so the fake broom sticks might have worked if approached by rear. The emblem at the time had a red ball in middle and at the beginning of crossing the coast Japanese farmers waved at them. You cant tell all the details in a comment on KZbin.@@markfranks1329

There is a book available titled “The Doolittle Raid” by Carroll V Gaines is an excellent source of information on the details of the aircraft, stores, crew members and just about anything you want to know about the event. He’s an excellent historical author with the correct facts and fictions about the raid. For example: if you look all the photos of the aircraft on the deck, you will notice that none of the propeller tips are painted yellow as with the prop hub assembly all being black. There’s a reason for this. He even goes into detail as to what color the bombs were. I think anyone interested in this raid or the B-25’s should get this book!
