Both my Grand Fathers flew as crew on the B-26 in the rear gunner position for the SAAF

My dad flew on one. He was a radio operator. Shot down on their 51st mission near Corsica. He survived. Had to go back up after recovery in Libya.

It's such a cool airplane. And it's not recognized like it should be. But my uncle flew in one as a top turret gunner . He flew out of Sicily and later England. He used to tell me stories about combat in it . He would walk through the plane at the end of missions and pick up flak from inside the plane

I'm lucky guy I still get to talk to a guy who did 78 combat missions as a bombardier/navigator in a B-26 Marauder named the "Miss Behavin " . 3 of them on D-Day !! He's my dad and will be 102 years old in September of 2024. He's also the recipient of the USAAF " Distinguish Flying Cross " and an honorary member of the greatest generation!! Dad you have been and always will be my hero .

Hi there, Really enjoyed your post, do you have any further information on his time at station 166 as our family are continually collecting stories and we would really appreciate it.

@LivRowe-te1vf Well my dad was in the 9th , 391st Bombardment Group, 575 Squadron flying out of Matching England. I have corresponded with the son of his pilot on a few occasions. My dad's health is failing but he's still hanging in there . Hopefully he will get to see his 102 birthday. He was a very humble man and I didn't know he was awarded the "Distinguish Flying Cross " until he gave me is medal on his 80th birthday. I'm extremely proud to be his son and my God Bless him .

Great video! Thanks for the scholarship. Does Flak Bait at the Smithsonian not count for some reason? I know it's undergoing a full restoration due to be completed this year, 2024, or next. Although not to flight-worthy status necessarily. (Side note: My great Uncle, Dayle Oran Freeman, was in the 322nd Bombardment Group, 449th Bombardment Squadron flying B-26's out of Essex, England. He flew a few missions aboard Flak Bait as a waist gunner and won the Distinguished Flying Cross with at least three oak leaf clusters meaning that, in effect, he was awarded the DFC four times.)

My dad was in the 322nd BG, 451st BS. He flew 63 missions as a tail gunner, his plane was Satan's Sister. Who knows , he might have known your uncle.

I was fascinated by a b26 marauder model kit that my dad had a long time ago

I enjoyed this segment. I agree that the B-26 is one of the most overlooked allied aircraft of WWII. Having completed all five volumes of Michael Claringbould's and Peter Ingman's excellent "South Pacific Air War" book series, it is readily apparent that the B-26 was a capable participant in the Rabaul campaign and beyond in the allied efforts against the Japanese in that region. If you've not read these books, I highly recommend them. As always, thanks so much for sharing. Steve
