Man I wish I could find an apprentice like you, your cool as a fan, I like your style no doubt man. I've sat for hours watching your videos, your explanations are so clear you make everything very easy to understand man plus the little slick comments you throw in in the videos are hilarious.

I've used the same power supply as a back up supply, I've found that most coil machines run really sweet steady 6.9v - 7.2v.

Too many factors. I have some that run at 3 and others closer to 10. Some machines are built so well they will run between 3.5 all then way up to 10 depending on how hard you want it.

I was digging around through some files and found this. This was an older video. You will notice I'm not wearing gloves. I've started wearing gloves every time I touch a tattoo machine. Tattoo machines can be tuned so many ways. I think it would be difficult to tune a machine this way. You can listen to your machine to tell if it is running correctly.

One lil tid bit I'll share that I've always used as a reference for tuning and building machines has to do with rear spring tension. I think a proper spring gauge is a must for tuning but maybe that's just me. A small liner up to a 7 tight should be 380-440 grams, a large grouping liner or shader 440-480 grams, color packer 350-400 grams and a cutback shader 440-480 grams.

People overlook this vital piece of machine tuning. I think they just don't want to buy the spring tension gauge. I bought one a long time ago and it was a game changer. Machine tuning was a lot easier after getting it. Numbers will vary a little but it is the range people need to understand. It isn't always going to be on the dot. As long as you are in the range somewhere you are good.

Tattoo University absolutely. You're right. I didn't use one for a long time. I was stuck in that, I can tell with my thumb mentality. Having a spring tension gauge took the ease and accuracy of tuning a machine to a whole different level.

@@TattooUniversity Hi, I'm trying to improve my knowledge of machine tuning/ adjusting and would love to buy a spring tension gauge, I think it will take a lot of the difficult guesswork out of it. Can I ask where you bought yours from?

Not gonna lie, I’ve watched a lot of your videos on tuning a machine an I’m not sure if I have mine set right. Kinda messed up a tattoo on myself trying to shade but I think my machine is just not set right an it messed it up😐 I have two machines at the moment, one for lining an the other for shading but like I say I’m not sure if I have them in tune. An also I don’t have a power supply like yours that reads everything, just my volts. Can someone plz help me get on track an started 🤦‍♂️

What is the difference of speed increase or decrease depending on needle size? Can you compare RL with RS and Mag for exemple. Is it the bigger the needle the fastest the speed??? I thought it was slower for Mag and RS ??? Thank you for your videos

I have both rotary and coils, I run 7.4v my FKirons Direkt 2 for colors and faster for lining about 9v. Coils it depends can go from 5v to 9v:-)

Thank you I am not an expert too but I see that we use about the same voltages. But I am not sure about speed between different size of needles like from 5rl to 18rl for exemple, can we use the same speed?? Similar question about Mag??? I thought that there were kind of a basic rule????

What brand tattoo machine do you use for some of your higher end ones or custom hand built ones? Or are they mostly just pieced together of different parts? I'm just getting into tattoo practice and learning rather quickly, I need to improve some of my art work and learn shading. Do you find grip size effects lining?

I have been trying out a lot of different machines. There are still ones I haven't tried. Would like to get my hands on all of them. I always have my trusty coils to fall back on. I'm willing to sell or trade most of my machine to try out new ones. I keep a set of coil machines that I won't get rid of. The first machine I got set up as a liner. Some random coil machines set up for shading, and a color packer from hexagon_irons. I like stealth rotary, whip, and now the red scorpion. Red Scorpion is knock off so I will look for a better version of this machine. I don't really like the really fat grip or the thin ones. I've started using the medical tape around the grip or using the memory foam grips. That has been the most comfortable for me. My hands hurt after a tattoo if I use the metal grips. Used to the disposable grips with rubber grips. I don't think it effects lining but think it affects how my hands feel after a tattoo.

Tattoo University thanks I appreciate your videos and knowledge that you share with us viewers and subscribers. I am learning with coil machines before I make a move to rotary. As I get better I will buy a Swiss engine rotary like a Fk edge, bishop , or neotat vivace machine.

Go ahead and try rotaries. They are just another tool to tattoo with.

719Moto Mx I won't help someone unless they learn to use coil machines first. If you can tune and tattoo with a coil machine, you can use anything. If you only learn on a rotary machine that's all you'll ever know. My go to coil machines are all pulse machines but I constantly try cheaper and the more expensive machines. Pulse machines just fit my style and their customer service is top notch. I would also argue they have some of the best coils made. For cheaper machine dragonhawk really stepped it up since their 2017 machines. They have the proper frame geometry for a liner, shader and color packer. They are very usable cheap machines that are fairly well made. Amazon also carries a set of Danny Robinsons machines that are as good as most $200-250 machines that I've used. Rotaries, I'm a huge fan of neo tat vivace machines. Their linear stroke is very similar to a coil machine and you can but motors with different stroke lengths for different purposes. And they're reasonably priced for a high end rotary machine. I use 2 every day. On ebay they're is a pen rotary by AZ tattoo called the supreme adjustable tattoo pen. I had my buddy that only uses a cheyenne hawk tattoo with this machine for over a month. He agreed with me. Theres just not much noticeable difference. And they're half the price of a cheyenne. They're built right here in the US. The guy will repair them if ever needed and once again customer service is outstanding.
