Thank you for your concise and informative view. One suggestion I have for other shows of yours is ' How about if you invite one additional economist and present it in a way of discussion or debate, rather than a way of one man lecture?'

no wonder we face shortage of foreign currency while the pm is busy building 10 billion dollar national palace. it would have been much better if the government could finish the 13 megga factories that were started during meles time. each could have employed millions and generated billion from export of sugar to arab nations like the original plan.
the danger is not from the exporting companies and liberalization for local companies and liberalization for foreign companies is totally different. investment coming to ethiopia on retail sector will 100% be by indian individuals like what happened in many other african countries westerns will not come for retail business here.
the other benefit that can not be quantified in numbers is it might help diffuse the racial tension the country has within.

So in your view why didn't the givernment opened the market long time ago? Have you studied the reason whythe Indian economy was cloesd for a very long-time before being opened to the foreign investors? Don't you think that the local investors capacity has to be built before the compelet exposure of the economy to foreign retailers???

Suppose I am a member of the diaspora who is interested in importing sunflower oil. After selling it for Ethiopian birr, if I want to export another product to earn hard currency, the bank typically employs a method like 70/30 or 50/50. This means that only half of the hard currency earned can be obtained directly, while the other half is converted at the current exchange rate and provided in birr. How can one ensure receiving the full amount of exported hard currency?

No one is sure! but It mostly depends on the national bank of Ethiopia's foreign currency reserve, policy adjustment, and government foreign currency priorites!
