As a Hungarian, Bartók is one, if not my favorite composer, mostly because I'm an amateur ethnographer, and Bartók's love for the beautiful Hungarian Folk music is so inspiring and great. He did so much for the Hungarian traditions, history and culture. This is a wonderful selection of Romanian folktunes in classical costume. Greetings goes out from a Hungarian to Romanians,Slovakians, Serbs,Finns,Turks and to all ! We have no reason to hate each other, when we have music, culture, history and traditions like no one else has. Turn off your TV, and forget about politics. Enjoy the Internet given possibilities.

It is a place in the world called Transylvania where people for hundreds of years live in harmony regardless of ethnicity (Magyar, Romanian, German) or religion. In 1568, the Diet of Transylvania met in Turda, and issued a decree proclaiming the freedom of conscience and religious tolerance for all the inhabitants of Transylvania. Bartok selected popular songs from among the Romanian ethnics and turned them into this masterpiece.

Just FYI: If I understand the ensemble correctly, he served not only as the principal/chair, but also as the quasi-conductor. All other members look to him for guidance, if not also for inspiration for how the piece would be rendered. That partially explains his "movements" during the performance. I was positively impressed by the enthusiasm of the players: their coherence and togetherness. Bravo!

I'm Romanian, and have lived in Denmark for the past 13 years (since I was 18), and even though my identity is in a state of limbo right now, when I hear these melodies, I instantly connect with them. I don't think there are other songs/melodies that portray so well the Romanian people at its core (beyond the cultural/societal issues). Whether it's the sad, longing and mournful history, or the joyful and celebratory one.
@deanronson63312 жыл бұрын
Even though I love this piece, I'm aware that it's a stylized version of Romanian folk music. Most Romanian people in cities or villages would maybe recognize some of it but probably not identify with it. For a true, down-to-earth Romanian folk music, you need to search YT for authentic vocal and instrumental folk sounds from that country performed by folk artists.

This hall where they are playing is so beautiful. Is it in Oslo? Amazing how similar the folk dances of cultures can be...I could almost hear this as Norwegian folk tunes.
@kobej17492 жыл бұрын
For me it was Solti and the Chicagoans, I believe. This performance definitely adds character, but loses none of the beauty. I hear some Levantine folk music in Bartok's music; the Maharaja of Mysore (a classical music enthusiast and funder) heard Indian folk music in it. It's a testament to Bartok's universality, and that of music in general, I like to think.

Very accurate and important that he was born in the intercultural region of Banat - where, actually, nine (9) different ethnic groups coexisted - and coexist.
