Mam I was attached to this cafe since childhood since my school was next to this iconic joint. In 1968 the cost of mava cake was 25 paise per piece. Really amazing to enjoy. There was another joint in grant road that was cafe oriental where the mava cake was made in glass shape. Really both the iconic joints were famous for their mava cakes. Recently about a month back I happened to visit this joint and the taste has not differed hats off to this iconic joint.

In the era of 60/70 Catching my daily train for office from Lower Parel I used to get down at Grant Road only for morning breakfast at Merwan Hotel. It is just opposite the Grant Road Station. I have enjoyed most of items of Merwan backer. I have travelled and visited the many cities but could not find any match of Merwan Backer. I feel lucky that I could consumed backery items of Merwan Backer.

We used to conduct women security program across the colleges in MAHARASHTRA, and when ever the program used to get conducted at SOPHIA COLLEGE, I used to travel a hour early, as then I used to reside at KALYAN then and traveling to GRANT ROAD was time consuming but love for MERVAN made me do it happily. But now as they don't offer us seating so I don't visit it, but now I think they're offering seating. I will make a point to visit them when I would visit GRANT ROAD. Slit the broon from the center, melt butter and put pour it in😋 ❤.

Mawa cake way was available only in the evening between 530PM and 630 PM only, way back in the seventies.. It was my regular habit to visit Merwan cafe and indulge in having Mawa cake and Chai. Life, time experience, cannot forget it.

Try the ginger biscuits, khari and jeera butter biscuits too over here. They also sell some products from Surat's famous Dotivala Bakery like the butter biscuits and nankhatai. Pallonji's Ginger and Raspberry aerated drinks are also available here.

I know Merwans is one of the best. And I totally agree that they have a unique taste of their mawa cakes etc. Reasonable too. Never get disappointed with their quality. But Madam you must check out The Vienna Bakery in Vakola Santacruz East. It is one of the oldest in Mumbai. Well known. People come from far and wide for the Rich Plum Cake and puffs.

Interesting video. I used to visit Parsi and Irani Cafes during my younger days at Colaba etc.around 40+ years back. Badshah Falooda near Fort Market, Paradise restaurant, Leopold Cafe, Colaba to name a few. @4:16 you accepted the offer of the kind owner to see the Oven, which in my opinion is the most important part of the success and popularity of this eatery. I was very curious to view it too as I am a serious foodie myself. You spent all of your time tasting and explaining the items standing outside the bakery 😁

I actually went inside the bakery and saw all details of how they bake, cook eggs in the kitchen, storage of ingredients, special family room for eating which is temporarily closed now, interiors etc. and I really hope they start dining again which is expected within a month's time. Thank you

Started in 1914 by Boman Merwan, the grandfather of one of the current owners, Sarosh Irani, it has been the best place for anyone who likes to indulge in a delicious breakfast or their most famous mawa cake and samosas. Although the bakery had been sold last month, the final shutters went down on Tuesday. Totally confused.. This news was in DNA April 2014
