Sariyer
Located in the northern part of the European side of Istanbul , this enormous district is bordered by the Black Sea to the north, the Bosphorous Strait to the east, and with Eyup, Sisli, and Besiktas districts from west to south respectively. The main part of the district is located along the shore of the Bosphorus, with the area including the town of Sariyer itself, among other towns and villages.
What was once merely a rural area with luscious forests and fishing villages, has over the years become a luxurious part of the city, with some of the highest house prices in Istanbul. For a long period of time the main trade of the villagers of this area was fishing, as they were nicely positioned on the European banks of the Bosphorus, and you can still see fishing along the coastline, although the strait itself has lost a great deal of its sea life. The tradition of the fishermen is also carried on by many restaurants in this district, where you can eat wonderful dishes prepared from fresh fish, for a wide array of prices.
During the early Ottoman period, Sultans were very keen on this place as they would often come here for picnics, excursions, and hunting trips. With the nature of the area attracting more and more attention, it became a favorite of the wealthy merchants of Galata, who not only visited it regularly for some relaxing time, but started building summerhouses along the coastline, which spurred the construction of villas of a large number of other Istanbulians of the upper classes, and a lot of foreign embassies.
Today, the tradition continues, and after building the coastal road, and the infrastructure for gas supply, along with new drainage systems in some parts, the demand for building expensive, lavish villas and summerhouses everywhere from the coastline up to the hills has rocketed, with prices soon following. Unfortunately, as always with sudden leaps in population, the infrastructure hasn’t been able to support it adequately, which means that, in spite of all the road construction, the area is burdened with heavy traffic, especially the town of Sariyer. The Buykudere Road, which connects the area with Besiktas, takes some of the pressure from the coastline road, but even with the high-speed ferries available to commuters, the traffic along this scenic route is not that pleasant.
Up to the north, the small town of Kylios lies on the shores of the Black Sea, backed by a lush forest, making for a perfect getaway from the city and its overcrowded, noisy streets. You can get there through Sariyer, but as the traffic on the way there can always bring you down before you get to your destination, it would probably be a better idea to go through the Belgrad Forest, all the while enjoying its incredible nature and amazing aqueducts that stood the test of time. When you get to the shore, you will find lots of cafes for a pleasant refreshment with a wonderful view, along with bars, and even beach clubs offering you a good time. If you’re there during the summer, you might even catch a rock festival taking place there.
Although some of the locals practice it, swimming is not recommended, as the Black Sea can often bring furious storms, and with the coastline full of rocks, coupled with a strong current and undertows, it is not safe even for the most experienced swimmers.
Amongst the district’s important buildings is the Rumeli Feneri, the tallest lighthouse in Istanbul that, with its counter-part, the Anadolu Feneri on the other side of the strait, comprises the northern boundary of the Istanbul port and the imaginary line that marks the border between the Black Sea and the Bosphorus.
Rumeli Hisari, another structure with an Anatolian counter-part, namely the Anadolu Hisari, is a castle built just before the conquest of Constantinople, and was one of the key reasons for the successful campaign. Commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II, it was constructed in the record time of just four months, in order to cut off the supplies to the besieged city, and with Anadolu Hisari just across the Bosphorus, it provided total control of all traffic on the entrance to this strategically very important strait. Nowadays, it is a place where a lot of open-air concerts take place during the summer.
So, come to this rich area, get away from the city, and relax. Don’t mind the traffic and find your place, be it in a fish restaurant by the Bosphorus, in a cafe on the shore of the Black Sea, or secluded spot in the lush forest, calm and tranquil.
