The centurion didn't only understand authority on his own but he was given "revelation" to understand that Jesus was given authority over sickness and demonic spirits. The same happened with Peter when Jesus asked who do they say that I am. Then he asked Peter, who do you say that I am. Peter answered correctly by revelation from God. Another example is the Canaanite woman whose daughter was tormented by demons. Jesus ignored her until she said that even the dogs eat the crumbs from the childrens table and she worshipped him. She received a revelation that she too, a gentile could also receive if she believed.
