I encourage all mothers to not be afraid to completely let go and sign off duty as a mom of adult children. You can keeo praying for them but you dont need to keeo doing for them, planning for them, thinking for them, trying to save them from their own mistakes and definitely not put up with false entitlement and lack of gratitude. Find your own life and enjoy being liberated from being mom. Create your life that is seperate from being a mother. You can decide if its an emergency and you need to step in but let them figure out life without mom for awhile.

You must not be a mother saying what you did. A mother can not sign off duty, her duties might take different expression, but definitely does not end as long as one have children on this earth. We have the example of Mary the mother of Jesus, she was His mother until the moment Christ on the cross knowing that He will die, assigned to her a different son in the person of John the apostle and she still continued the duty as mother with John, and John the duties of son to her. So, once one has become mother, she is mother till the end of her life, if not for her own children in case they passed, for others. Motherhood is a calling, it never ends in this life and this can't change.

Very hard to do but I see this is necessary because our adult children stop being open to any advice. As a homeschool mom, it’s very difficult to just stop passing on advice and instructions especially when you see they are making foolish choices. This season of having adult children is the most difficult indeed! Praying daily for my precious children.

My adult son and I have always been very close. He and his wife had 4 children, with whom I spent a lot of time. I loved them so much. And they loved me. My husband and I went out for lunch alternating every Friday. Then they had a fifth child! I was delighted!! My beloved daughter and her husband and children lived in California. For reasons yet unclear to us my son’s wife (who, we loved, but had concerns about her) decided that we were no longer allowed to see our grandchildren. The baby girl is almost 5 years old and doesn’t know that I am her Grandmother. We have prayed, as have many friends who love us. My son loves us, but he is controlled by the woman he married. Attempts at reconciliation fail. I don’t know what to do with the pain!

I have to remind myself just pray and put it in God hands that he will shape them,because he loves them even more than we do. I like to pray for all who are lost will find the way back to the Lord. That's also include all my children. May God always be by their sides to walk with them each day of their life.

Adult child is not correct grammar, is being made up undermining the correct grammar usage. It is child , my children grammar is children at any age, they are children of the parent . so we can say 'my child is 40 years old . it is by age not child adult it makes no sense.

My oldest son is 24 and is an alcoholic and as if that wasn’t bad enough now he’s on meth. I have seen the side affects of his habits that have forever scarred me for life. He has been kicked out twice. This last time he has broken every rule we laid down for him when we agreed to let him come back. For money he will not work. He goes around buying junk and resells it for a few dollars profit. Sometimes he makes a huge sale but that’s not often and then he blows through the money he doesn’t make enough to pay his own way. I don’t tell his step dad a lot of it. I’m afraid he is going to over do it one day like several of his friends have already done. I pray all the time for him all the time. I have shown my son more love than anyone else in this world and he has crapped on me time and time again and yells at me and cusses when he comes home drunk. He is a black out drinker. I’m at my wits end. I just want to beat some sense into him. I’m so tired of feeling this way and putting up with his rule breaking and worthless way of living.

Missi R my mom is going through a similar situation with both of my brothers! I encourage you to reach out for support, if you haven’t yet. You were never meant to go through this alone! Find a church and some moms who will help you! I know Bethel Church in Redding, Ca. does Skype sessions for counseling and they are incredible. Their godly counsel helped save my marriage. I HIGHLY recommend Chrystal who is part of the SOZO team. She hears from God in amazing ways and guides you so well!!!

I have an alcoholic daughter and found out in Jan my other daughter is hooked on heroin, she lives with me and is recently doing the same things your son has done, pawning anything she can, giving people rides for 'gas' money or for a hit or two; can't keep a job. She has 2 young children and they all 3 live with me. I push her away as I try to talk to her about it, she knows, she knows, she hates it down deep inside, wants to quit but fear grips her in the process of quitting, said it's horrible mentally and physically. It's all over my head, I can't change any of it; I can't kick her out or abandon my other daughter with the rides she needs in the middle of the night. So I try to continue to practice praying and believing and trusting God for their very lives, physically and spiritually. Keep seeking Christ, no matter what. Pray for your husband's heart to be guided and softened by God so you aren't alienated from him as you are going through this. I have to practice this myself, daily.
