Jokes aside. I am not a korean so hearing such thing is a culture shock for me. I mean, they were still kids right? (The students, I mean.) Growing up in the Philippines, I could only compare my experience to the reality of pressure in Korean students behind this joke. I hope, they could be treated as kids as well and not just a ticking timebomb that might explode in due time due to the amount if pressure that keeps on building up inside of them. For my opinion, studying for 8-9 hours here in the Philippines every Monday to Friday is enough to build and nurture the educational foundation of a child. I may not know a lot about Korean culture but as an adult, I realized that school grades will never define a person. It might help, yes. It could even be a stepping block for them to reach their dreams. But in most cases, it does not really apply to everyone. At least let a kid be a kid and let them explore things that they really want to achieve outside of the school curriculum and activities. Here in the Philippines, you can choose whether you want to enroll your child to a private tutoring sessions for advance lessons. I am not saying that it only exist in Korea. But to make it mandatory to the point were it breaks a child, that is very heartbreaking for me. I am a breadwinner in ny family, a public servant and a novelist/designer (as a hobby). I don't belong to the top 1% but I can say that I could at least suffice the needs of my family at age 28 with the help of God's mercy (of course). I already have a house and lot that I am paying through house financing. I am never part of a private tutoring class during my student years but I was a scholar both in high school and college. I am never the genius kid back then but I am a hardworking person which is my very own choice. What I am trying to say is it is US who could define and create our own destiny in life, not the standards that the society forced to us. I know this comment is getting long but this is all because it breaks my heart hearing any news about students who had taken their own life just because they were pressured to be the number one in a field that their parents chosen for them. We cannot force a fish to fly because it is meant to swim. And we cannot even say they are an idiot for not being able to fly because even the biggest bird cannot even fly. If there is any student out there who could read this comment, I want to say to you that YOU ARE ENOUGH. YOU CAN BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE. YOU ARE YOUR OWN STABDARD. DO NOT LET THEM DECIDE WHO YOU WANT TO BECOME. DO WHAT YOU REALLY WANT. Here I am a 1994 kid, once a student just like you and I am cheering for you from the bottom of my heart. If others can, you can do it as well! Never limit yourself based on the boundaries someone had set.
