Agree, this is something you only buy for yourself, as the squares more or less look alike from a style perspective. The nicer build, the nicer resin, the more subdued face without crayon colors, the more solid weight, all just gives it a bit of a higher end look and feel and like its not trying too hard. I could not believe how buttery the resin and strap are on this. I got the 5000 because I did not want to get a cheaper model and then regret it anyway, I knew I would.

Awesome review! I think the cool thing about these watches is that you can have a piece of watch history on your wrist, without coming across like you're trying to flash a status symbol. To me, it fills the gap between being a connoisseur and a snob. It's robust and retro stylish, but still super modest. That's exactly what I like in luxury items.

Nice review! I have this watch and absolutely love it. It gets a ton of wrist time. I took 2 watches on my vacation and the GW-5000 was one of them. It was on my wrist kayaking, caving, snorkeling and island hopping. With a 12 hour time difference and changing of times zones, this was the perfect watch.

The GW-5000s are really going for some great deals recently. Getting a full steel, DLC coated, atomic/solar, made in Japan G-Shock for around the 260-280 mark is a great deal. I wear one as an every day beater watch and I couldn't be happier.

It's the LCD display. I have some old Pioneer and Geneve digital watches. These are 40+-year-old watches. They have that certain something to them. And Casio has kept that with the squares. What makes them so nice to look at. Heck, I do have some mechanicals, but I could happily stare at the LCD all day just as much. ⌚😄

Got my first Casio G shock in 1987 when I was 17 years old...it was when they all were built with the forged screw down backs and cases...why they stopped making them all like this is disappointing to me...the dw5600e is similar in looks but a far cry from the original blood line...mine also had the standard hourly chime with an added "via beep"...it would double chime on the hour and single beep on the 1/2 hour too! the backlight was an incandescent bulb but it worked and that's all that was available back then..some time in the early 90s the illuminator was introduced and a really major advancement in backlight technology! the later dw5600e resin case made it lighter,but the sharp edged stamped case backs don't "fit" flush enough for me and have a sharp edge...they just seem unfinished to sight and feel but it's what they offer ...now that I'm 47 and my eyes aren't as sharp I found the analog G shocks are better for me at a glance for the time...have a new Casio GA-800 in bound from China as I write this....first 3 hand analog G in a affordable model ..all these years and I'm still wearing a G shock...I'm a little disappointed at how Casio caters more to the inner city kids and fashion geeks and designs accordingly with wacky colors and strange dials and round,blinking digital eyes that are to me just eye candy...they need to remember us veterans who were there in the Genesis of this amazing concept of a timepiece...they first guys who saw the vision and true purpose of such a watch....it was the construction worker,the policeman,the guy running a chainsaw all day,the soldier,the motocross rider,the surfer dude,anyone who was active an rough....but as this world changes...many other things are going in weird directions in my opinion...just glad theres a couple of G's that still appeal to me....and for that...I'm thankful.

Thank you for your service, John Rambo. :-) The G Shock concept remains true in terms of its ruggedness; you'd be hard pushed to get a watch which can take a beating like a G Shock, even now. I agree about legibility, too. When I was a kid, a digital display was fine. Now I prefer a dial with hands to see the time at a glance. The new squares are so tempting, but I worry I'll end up squinting at the screen.

If you take off the rubber protective housing off it looks really cool in steel. It looks like a A168 with 4 buttons and made of steel. Really cool. Look up Gshock with the rubber bumper removed it’s cool looking

I own a 5000U. Improvements: This watch is a tool for me. I use it at night often. The intermittent 1.5 or 3 second backlight is useless. Option for a 15 second, or even manual on/off back light so users can see functions in the dark without having to hit the light button again. Second: Wider band please. Personal preference of course but I'd like to see this watch band a consistent width from lug to clasp or no more than a 1mm taper. Lastly; of course the buttons are hard to get to without some concentration. Larger buttons would be great but if a diameter increase is not possible, consider making the buttons taller by .5mm and maybe some knurling. I like this watch. It could be better as a tool for us working guys with some minor tweaks.

This review is still great and the watch is amazing watch - the "u" is the current version and is unchanged except for lighting and I believe a European date option. Only improvement I appreciate in the GW-5000u-1jf is the lower power LED lighting which can be set for 3 seconds (after glow). T

The 5000 is also my favorite quared! Nice Video and presentation. But DLC means "diamond like carbon" not coating. Also big differences are the production sites, the 5000 is made in Japan, the others in Thailand or China :-) Stay healthy

I wonder if/when Casio will revamp this model using the Bluetooth module from the GMWB5000. I have a full metal square and a resin bluetooth square, and a resin version with the full metal module with DLC steel case would be the perfect inbetweener. The resin bezel would be cheap and easy to replace, unlike the steel bezels which cost a fair bit if you buy original. Having the bluetooth versions has spoiled me for watches which can't be accessed or synced via smartphone, and the full metal square makes me appreciate the extra heft and solidity of a steel case and screwdown caseback.

I wish that this had the Module: 3215 (G-Lide functions, which include Tide Graph and Moonphase, currently exclusive to the 5600 series), and then the GW-5000-1JF would have been perfect for me. I love my G-Lide Summer '17 white GWX-5600WA-7ER, identical to the Japanese GWX-5600WA-7JF (and a sister to your brown GWX-5600WB-5ER, unless you have the Japanese GWX-5600WB-51JF), and I have noticed that it is slightly physically different to the base 5600/5610 case design series. However, it is that module from the 5600 series that I adore, so if this GW-5000-1JF had that, or a GWX-5600-1JF existed (it sadly does not), I would have paid the premium IMMEDIATELY. Outside of that, an amazing all metal internal watch with shock resin surround, retaining that awesome retro look ^^

the price increase may be that the wavecepter technology struggles to get through metal if you look at the oceanus. I am a fan but keep finding £40 5610's why pay £250 to £300 for this one I would if the 5610 suddenly was only available at £150 I would say yes. I think that casio may be charging extra for the gimmick. Having said that of course I would have one maybe a christmas present :-)

According to Seiya Japan, its lug to lug would be larger than the regular 5600. Is this correct? I wouldn’t use those at all. Besides being ugly, they make it extremely difficult to clean the face of the watch, and they’ll leave permanent marks that will show where the finishing rubbed off. Stay away from them.

I don't know why people refer to black screwed in case backs as DLC, they'r not, it is pvd, only titanium models come with fully DLC coatings, try it and see how easy they scratch and get dinged, it just has ornamental value, nothing more. I personally prefer resin models with regular 4-screw case backs, it makes more sense.
