I recently found my DW5600 after rummaging through storage. It sat in there for nearly 10 years without a battery change, and is still ticking away without a new battery, 5 months after I found it. Of course it was in storage so the alarm and light weren’t being used and thus weren’t killing the battery, but still. Absolutely outstanding.

Greetings. On this site because I too have a DW5600 (35 yrs young) that was given to me as a B-Day gift. I recall changing the battery 1 time but more than likely twice in those 35 yrs. I was going to use it the other day but the screen has frozen up where I cannot change settings. Not sure if it is a battery thing(haha) or something more. You ever have this happen with your piece?

Nice video. Thanks. I only have one so far, my beater gw-m5610. Ive worn it for 4 or 5 years. I wasn't real excited about it when I ordered it, but the more I wear it, the more I realize how cool and tough this little watch is. And I bought it when the trending watch style was bigger=better, so I was going against the grain here. But I wanted solar and atomic, and I wanted something to fit under my sleeves easier. It does all that. I've put it through some rough situations and its still kicking, though I could use a new bezel cover on it, but I don't care about that. The mineral glass is still perfect, being inset nicely. The original strap finally cracked so now it wears a Nato. So, I've fallen in love with it. I want a couple more of these, but I'm not sure I'd wear them enough. I love this little apocalypse watch so much. Maybe I'll get another though.

thats a great collection. I was skeptical about this g-shock cult following people had going on, but now that i had my 5600e for a year I kinda see why this line of watch is worshiped so much. I mean mine has a year of wear and it still looks like new. the phisical dimensions of it are just right, not like the round g-shocks that look Gigantic. it had never failed me ,and, I dont have to worry about maintenance. clearly the most dependable gear I ever had. people criticize this brand because its unnecessairily tough. But in fact if it can resist insane situations like boiling water,freezing,falling from a building,getting runover by a truck. then it will never break or get an ugly scratch on normal use.

Despite being in my early 50s I managed to entirely skip all of these watches. I did once have an LCD watch and so that’s what the $40 version reminds me of. The layout of the squares can’t be beat; I don’t understand the appeal of the rounds. And then I get interested in solar and atomic until I see the prices, and wonder why the display (uh, and the whole thing) looks like 1983. Nostalgia becomes sobering quickly. Digital watches? Apple Watch, that is all. Oh, and that combi bracelet is pretty badass for sure, except for the part where you apparently have to know secret handshakes to find one. And then pay $100 for it. Rapidly takes the fun outta the hobby. I still want one, obviously without knowing why.

Great video! Thanks for taking the time to make it-- FWIW, My 'gateway drug' (for G-Shocks) was my G-100-1bv ana-digi. Perfect size, tough as nails, highly accurate, still looks good in spite of (or maybe *because* of) a boatload of 'hard use patina'... and more features than most other watches, period (whatever the price point). And now? I'm lusting after a 'square'-- probably something solar-powered, but we'll see... For some reason, I keep gravitating to the least expensive models-- not because of their low prices, but for their rugged simplicity, end of story.
@davidnelson68265 жыл бұрын
J Michael Martin If you’re still looking for your first square, I might recommend the GX56BB-1 for you. While it’s not $40, (correct me if I’m wrong) it’s the least expensive mud/ tough solar combo watch. But moreover it’s one of the most rugged looking, well-styled g shocks. Its only $99 which when I compare it to much more expensive watches I’m always shocked. You must put it into consideration.

I think the concept of the full metal squares is to create a premium, almost luxury watch for those who love the resin squares. Given how polished it is, you're not really meant to use it like a resin square. It's for weekends, desk duty, even going out in a nice shirt or suit. You've got a great looking watch that has all the internal hardiness of the original G in case it's necessary. I'm sure there are thousands of people who grew up with resin squares, and would love a more 'adult' version of their childhood/teenage watch.

I have to admit, I had zero interest in G-Shock squares until you (and then Bruce Williams) started singing their praises. Now I have two 5610 and even put OEM Casio bull bars on them! Furthermore, I picked up a large handful of the entry-level G-Shock square last fall and they came in handy for horological evangelism because I gifted them to young people and brought them to White Elephant/Yankee Gift Swap events. It is such a solid, functional, classic watch that wears well in almost every configuration on every wrist.
