A really interesting review by a drawbar organist of a classic analog synthesizer, Jim. Gil Melle would have loved to have a Prophet 5 or better yet Prophet 10 back in the early 1970s. He was one of the first musicians to use electronic sounds in TV shows such as Night Gallery where he composed most of the music for this and other shows of that era.
@truthandreality84652 жыл бұрын
Gil Melle, one of the absolute BEST!! He didn't have a Prophet-5 or Prophet-10 back in the early 1970s but he had some instruments over the years, including the amazing instruments he built and played himself!! He might have had a Prophet-5 or Prophet-10 when they were new!!
@tommymandel4 жыл бұрын
thanks Jim. It's amazing how you go right to the parameter we want to hear tweaked, and devote just enough back and forth A-B comparison switching to demonstrate what a curious droid would want to find out. I wonder if that tonal shift from Rev 4 -3 - 2 - 1 could be part of the filter slop that's being introduced, making the Sustain Level of the filter slightly different (or more random) as that Rev knob dials back the years.

Nice demo, but I own a Rev 1 and in the past I’ve owned 2 other Rev 1’s and they really aren’t as sloppy as setting ‘1’ on the ‘Rev’ knob would have people believe. I would say they are in between 3 & 2 setting on the Rev knob...
@alphacodesynth4 жыл бұрын
Of course , doubt any company would release a synth with such issues, P5 rev1 when came out of factory was fine tuned and calibrated. this is a setting that gives you a taste of a beat up uncalibrated P5 in 2020 :)

What a great demo...I love it when players use it as a musical instrument, and not a noise source. One thing that nobody has touched on is the polyphonic portamento. Is it like the Oberheim OBX-A and OB-8 portamento (think Gloria, by Laura Brannigan) ?
@abwdoc4 жыл бұрын
Btw...Dave Smith needs to hire you !!
@JimAlfredson4 жыл бұрын
@@abwdoc Thank you for the kind words. I will make a video showing the polyphonic portamento but in a word, yes... it works like the OB8. It's really interesting on the Prophet 10 because of the 10 voices. It can be quite unpredictable. I do hope they allow us Prophet 10 owners to disable some voices in order to get that classic Prophet 5 voice stealing sound, which would also make the polyphonic portamento a bit less random.
@abwdoc4 жыл бұрын
I’m sure that could be implemented in software, utilizing one or more of the switches present. Hmmmm...maybe someone should suggest that to Dave (hint...hint). My 10 is on order, and should be in in weeks...I sure hope that my cabinet has as much “character” in the graining as yours (stunning). And, your video also is the only one that shows the difference in sound between filter types and with different Vintage knob settings...big kudos. Keep up the postings !!

The SSM has been reissued too and is called the 2140 and it is functionally and sonically the same. Some synth parts suppliers are already selling them for original Rev2 replacement.
@davebellamy48674 жыл бұрын
There is, the SSI 2140 designed by Dave Rossum (again), according to Dave Smith. I think the guys who do the Rev-1 mod to turn rev3s into rev2s are also using five of them to replace the Curtis IC filters.

Since there are no gigs, I've just been using the effects in my DAW (Cubase). But I do have an Eventide Time Factor for delays and the SPACE for reverb. I need to get myself a good chorus pedal. Maybe an Electro-Harmonix? Not sure.

great demo thanks. i’m still trying to decide between the 5 & 10. how does “vintage” knob affect unison (when detune is at minimum)? i assume more voices is better but i wonder are there any downsides to the 10 vs the 5? i’ve heard examples of how chord progressions with long release times can get dissonant as notes overlap. but other than that...?

Is it about the sound or the fetishism. Sonically this synth sounds very pedestrian to me, not because it's a bad synth but this is such _incredibly_ well trodden ground. If you close your eyes this demo video could be any of a thousand hard or soft synths. I'm not trying to hate on this synth or its fans, but it's not IMO about music creation - unless perhaps the user interface is particulary inspirational and.. it's some knobs. Ok ok you be you ;-)
