Great video, I love the speech at the beginning. I agree with everything you said, especially the GAS part. I decided to kill off all my synths and just keep my Minimoog and Prophet 5 (still waiting to get it). I told myself "enough with this buying stuff... I need to be spending my time honing in on my actual playing skill and on synthesizing"

The question I always ask myself before spending serious money on new instruments: Is it just inspiring me to make new music because I'm turned on by it right now or does it enable me to make new music in the long run? Not an easy question to answer and that's why I sometimes buy things I don't really need, even when I'm convinced that I do ... at first. That's especially the case when a legendary instrument comes along like those P5/P10 reiusses. I also got a P10 recently, by the way. I suppose that I feel "complete" at the moment but if Yamaha were ever ready to go for an updated version of their infamous CS80 I'm not sure if this feeling is still valid. That would be rather impossible to ignore. But then again, it may be better to stop looking around instead of playing music. That's the trouble.

It has that SOUND (youtube does not transmit it), and you can express with it any emotion. Humble advice - use a good ANALOG mixer. For me it has made a huge difference. The sound of it is unique and very “fit-able”. Very easy to make it sound good. If I knew it before I would only buy only this and … Jupiter X😮. Done.

Thank you Brotha, it’s my own quirky playing style. So basically you learn the rules/theory of music then you break the rules and forget the theory lol. It’s a balance between playing like everyone else and utilizing your own signature style that stems from stumbling and making mistakes that become pathways to better ideas .

I do still love it, the OB-X8 is my all time favorite. I’ll be switching to a module version of the P10 to incorporate both. If you love the signature sound of the original Prophet it is worth it.

I agree so much about GAS and SAS. Sometimes they go together, though: I always think of Marvin Gaye composed nearly the entire Midnight Love album with a Jupiter 8 and an 808 on his own. These were brand new in ‘82 and would have been GAS-worthy.

I had the prophet 6, have the prophet 12 now which covers a wide range of sound, I have one space left in my studio and it’s either this or the poly brute......poly brute has poly sequencer which is appealing and touch strip ........and sounds excellent....so it’s performance oriented but ....that sound of the 5 👍
@RayyMusik3 жыл бұрын
This was exactly my dilemma. The PB is a modulation monster and sounds anything but bad. But the basic sound of the P5 is unsurpassed. Eventually, the PB plus the Repro-5 VST seemed to be most bang for the buck to me.
@xplank4 жыл бұрын
I did ask Sequential about if a voice expansion would be available at some point to turn a P-5 into a P-10, they said there are no plans at this time to do that, but they would pass my email onto Dave, who they say "does read all the emails".
@JustinCarey4 жыл бұрын
I would wager a guess that they probably will after they clear the back orders and module versions . It would be no different then the Rev2 expansion.

Thank you they are home made . I wanted the 5 but the retailer only had a 10. You can’t go wrong with either, I think the sound character lends itself well to 5 voice chords . 10 is just extra voices but not essential in my opinion .

Such a dated sound, does this mean that a whole new generation will be making music with these fusty old sounds? Or is it sad old men like me, with more money than sense who used to own them the second time around (early 90's) that will be buying them? I can't imagine who would want these sounds. The synth is a classic but in 2020 it feels like a curio. But maybe synths in general could be labeled thus, retro seems to have taken over the world. I'll get my coat...
@JustinCarey4 жыл бұрын
Haha I would equate it to a fender Stratocaster ... timeless . Look at the 808 drum, it’s never going out of style, or we are stuck in a time loop .
@litemakr4 жыл бұрын
"Dated" has become "classic" and yes, I predict we will be hearing a LOT of this in new music. The younger gen is getting more into classic rock of the 70s and this fits right in. BTW, really good sounds. The mod is essential to get the correct high end.
@Fallingoverbackwards3 жыл бұрын
A fender or gibson “analog” guitars never go out of style. Pianos dont go out of style. They are iconic, same is true of analog drifty synths. There are digital modern electric pianos but a fender rhodes sounds amazing.
