You NEVER add corn starch to hot or boiling water. I think it has caused confusion with some watching this video and who tried this recipe because they added the cornstarch to the water after it became hot. Their “goo” turned out lumpy and this is the reason why. When you add cornstarch to a recipe that is already cooking, just mix it into enough cold water to make it liquid, then it’s called a slurry. Then it is safe to stir into the hot water as long as you stir it in slowly, then stir constantly til it thickens to your desired consistency. Then your recipe is finished. If you want to add the corn starch in at the beginning, you can. But you have to do it BEFORE the water gets warm, which is what this girl did who made the video. Good job Sis. And a great idea! Think I’ll keep it and give you a 👍

PRO TIP for those who aren't big cooks: Mix the corn starch into the water *while still cold* ❄️. If you've ever put corn starch into a boiling soup to thicken it, you'll know the frustration of clumps because corn starch freezes up in warm liquids. Whisk it in while the water is still cold and you'll have a much easier time. Then bring your liquid to a boil. 🙂💕

I'm not really sure. I keep mine until they break from use. But since the ingredients are pretty cheap, you could choose to make new ones once per year. The big question is if they may be able to grow bacteria in the bag. That's something I don't know.

This option works WAY better than the alcohol and water recipe! This stays soft no matter what... AND super cold. My first batch came out a bit clumpy, so the next time I dissolved the cornstarch in about a 1/2 cup cold water first and then poured it into the boiling water. NOT ONE CLUMP! Perfect. I seal mine in food sealer vacuum pouches and always have had trouble with the alcohol getting sucked up into the seal. With this gel - not an issue at all, thus creating the perfect seal. Awesome video! For those of us who don't sew but still want a cover, you can- 1. take your fabric and hot glue the two pieces together. 2. fusible webbing that you use to iron and bind the two pieces together, or 3. Use fabric glue. All three options work if you're like me and don't sew.

I love these!! when I first was looking for the "unfreezeable" icepack I found this recipe and the one with alcohol & water.. well let's just say the alcohol & water is fine if you want to get freezer burn.. that thing was way way way to cold. even with a cloth barrier! however it did last longer. I did find it was great for my cooler for a day trip so not a complete waste. But these are great for people! the form around you great, they stack nicely in the freezer right away,he sewed her cloth covers shut, I used the pillow cover method so I could take them off and wash them. even easier than what she did I think. and accidents happen in/out of the freezer, lol. the gallon size is great for an adult, but I found it to be a little skimpy so I doubled the amount. and the recipe she gave fits perfectly in a quart which is great for a large area on a child. but for a smaller area like the wrist it can actually hurt to have that much weight on it, so I made some and split it into some snack size baggies. but bc they aren't freezer bags I put duct tape over the zipper and triple bagged them. I also took some of those small ones and sewed the ends together to forms a neck ring for when we get over heated.. I have 2 big freezers. so I have the space to dedicate just to ice packs, and don't laugh, I am a clutz, so I often need them!

I made ice packs for a chronic problem with my neck and shoulders. I needed something that would mold around these areas. Soap ice packs, alcohol and water doesn't "gel" enough, still makes a mess when melted. diaper ice packs hold the liquids well, but don't bend around neck and shoulders. This gel pack is amazing. I made my first one a few days ago,. Clumpy because I boiled the water first- ( a no-no) but I absolutely LOVE it. Today is my "making ice packs" day. Thank you for sharing this!! AMAZING!

Made four of these with cozies before hip replacement. Bought a freezer pack that you use in your cooler for picnics at dollar store. Froze all items and then at night took towel and sandwiched freezer pack between 2 gel packs. Used the other two gel packs on hip. When gels got warm just switched them out with the two in the towel.Gel packs lasted about 4 hours. Had ice packs all night without needing to get out of bed. Best gel packs ever.

I like this better than another video I just watched. I have jaw issues and I’m supposed to use ice on it, but the thought of using regular ice (which is hard) doesn’t sound comfortable so I’ve opted out of not icing my jaw. This is a really wonderful recipe. The ice pack is cold but not icy, just smooth cool gel. We use them straight on skin without a cozy. Overall I made 2 batches, one pack out of each batch. My younger sibling just got their wisdom teeth out so I made them in their favorite color, purple. The packs retain the cold very well. By the time we swap them out the one in the freezer is already cold. We love them. So thanks for the tutorial!

It's been over a month since I tried this recipe and have cycled the bag through freezing and room temperature at least ten times. The gel seems to have lost some of its viscosity although there doesn't seem to be bacterial or mold growth. I've played with the recipe and translated the volume measurements into baker's percentage (with water as reference) and this is what I've come up with thus far: water 100% salt 15 to 20% starch 10 to 15% Starch at 15% makes an extremely stiff, viscous gel that's difficult to stir when cooking (although various kinds of starches may give differing results). Increasing the salt content will proportionally lower the freezing temperature. With salt at 18% the icepack remained pliable at minus 10 Celsius (14 Fahrenheit) and wasn't at all rock solid at minus 20 C (minus 4 F).

I made the alcohol one but sealed it one of the vacuum seal type bags... I made a nice cover for it has been used over and over for 4 years and counting! Those bags are heavy duty and work great for this application!

GENERAL RECIPE Ingredients To Gather 2 (+1**) Cups Water, separated ½ (+¼**) Cups Salt, separated ¾ (+¼**) Cups Corn Starch, separated + a little food coloring if desired **The amounts beside the asterisks are the "in case you need it" amounts. Basic Instructions 1. Add ¾ Cup corn starch to 2 Cups of COLD water and mix until all lumps are gone. 2. Add ½ Cup Salt and your food coloring to the mixture and stir till combined. 3. Carefully pour this mixture into a pot. 4. Heat on medium till boiling, stirring frequently until near boiling then stirring constantly.^ ^ BE AWARE! A chemical reaction happens between the water and the cornstarch once it hits the boiling point that causes it to thicken. This reaction happens very quickly so your mixture can burn when that happens if you're not stirring it. 5. Check the video for details on what consistency you're looking for. TIPS 💡 If your mixture is too thick, add a little water at a time and stir until you get the right consistency. Doing this over low heat can help. 💡 If your mixture is too thin, you'll need to add a tablespoon or two of cornstarch into about a tablespoon of cold water, mix till smooth, then add to the mixture in the pot and bring to boiling. Stir and check the consistency. If still too thin, repeat this process again. ⚠️ If you had to add cornstarch, make sure to add salt. Add about ⅔ of the amount of cornstarch you added. I hope this helps others but honestly I'm putting it here to help me in the future. That way I don't have to watch the whole video again to find a couple details. Cuz I will be back! I've been making this exact recipe for years now. Since I first watched this video, I've probably made 10+ of these not to mention the ones I made for my friend. I have heat intolerance, widespread arthritis, spinal stenosis from my neck to my bum, anxiety & panic, and numerous other things that ice packs help with. I take them with me to pain management when I'm getting an epidural steroid injection to put cold on immediately after which helps so much with painful recoveries. Just saying, I've gotten a LOT of use outta this recipe. And the reason I'm here right now is cuz Summer's Coming and I need to refresh my supply. So thank you so much for posting this video! 🧡❄️

This was the only recipe I found that truly makes a gel that doesn't freeze hard and stays a flexible gummy ice cold gel goo instead of the alcohol/salt formula that basically just comes out as icy slush. Thank you! I used your blog 4 cup measurements, and made a large flat pack the size of my laptop computer. I insulated it with a 1/4 inch thick layer of memory foam and covered with a sunbrella fabric sleeve. This was the best by being pliable on my legs while keeping my computer and lap cool for hours!

Very useful recipe, that is child-pet friendly - in terms of no toxins, like rubbing alcohol, or dishwashing soap used. I need to make up a few of these for the heatwave, we are experiencing in Western North America at this time. This way, I can place them in a shallow footbath basin (especially if you have carpeted areas), and place your feet on it a few minutes at a time, while watching TV or sitting at the computer. Cooling down your feet, instantly makes you feel cooler. Why wading in a kiddie water park, seems to make you feel cooler. As well as, of course, for any aches and pains, you may have. Thank you so much for this! My daughter struggles with chronic, continual back pain and I needed a cold pack solution for her. So I made the cover from fleece (really comfy) and tripled the ingredients you used here for a 12" x 18" pad. I had a huge pot of goo but it worked perfectly! I ended up using an entire box of cornstarch, and although I knew to mix it with water for a slurry, it would have been better to do that a little at a time rather than dumping the whole box into a bowl and then dumping in the water. You have the same problem you get when you add cornstarch directly to your mixture - making the slurry in smaller increments would have worked far better. I also used one of those large zipper-top bags you can get at Dollar Tree. I sealed up the edges with duct tape to reinforce them and prevent leaks, and bam I have a wonderful cold pack. I couldn't be more thankful! p.s. I made the gel purple because it's her favorite color

This is the best recipe for an ice-pack or cooling pad. I am having hot flashes/night sweats and use two of these per night sometimes as a cool pillow. It is flexible enough to contour to my head and stays cool for about 3-4 hours. even after it has lost it's cool, it still helps wick away heat and is cooler than a foam pillow. I made a case for the gallon freezer bag size from a waffle weave dishcloth and velcro closures

I just made this a couple of hours ago to use inside my pillow, since it's too hot in the summer, and the heat bothers my sleep. I just put it in the freezer, will leave overnight for the first time and see what happens, when you guys are making mix the corn startch very well in the beginning leave it unstirred for a couple minutes until it thickens and then resume stirring on a strong flame. but start with a mild flame when putting in the salt and the cornstartch.

This may help to keep from clumping cornstarch. Add cornstarch in a half of mason jar with cold water, mix vigorously with fork or put lid on and shake, didn't have a single clump.

In the video you say about 1/2 cup salt and 3/4 cups starch but the blog specifically gives 1 cup each! I made it as per blog and seemed fine but it froze solid. Is that normal? I thought it would stay somewhat soft even if frozen. Thanks.
