57 years ago I was 18 years old @ Wurtsmith AFB where this airplane was delivered from Boeing. We also had 61001 Named "State of Michigan" I worked inside all the first 15 delivered. I miss them so much. I have thousands of stories about these. They are going to outlive me. I never thought that would happen. I will stop here or I would go on and on. Thank you, you big BUFF, I miss you so much.

Hi Steveo, thanks for making this video for all to see the most incredible aircraft ever made. I am 75 on Saturday. At 18 years old, I stepped on Wurtsmith AFB where 60001 had just been delivered. The very first B52H was visited by Ms Michigan which was painted in large letters on her side. She didn't have a scratch on her. The new car smell. We did not have 0015 but had tails both sides of the one you sat in. The grandsons of the pilots that flew in the very beginning are flying the H's today. She looks so different today. When we had her, she was polished aluminum and white paint. She had a 20mm Gatling sticking out the back end. She didn't have all the bumps on her body like she has today. I could go on and on about her but I just had to say something about the ole gal before her and I fly a different mission. Thanks for sharing the sky's with us.

I spent quite a few hours on 0001. That was in the 80s. The reason for the "wrinkled skin" is low level bomb runs. The plane wasn't designed to do them, but it does them and quite well.

Great video. Brings back memories of my time in the Air Force in SAC working on the B52G's during the 80's and cold war. The B52 was integral to Triad as a nuclear deterrent. Great to see the H's and young professionals flying and maintaining them. Nice video.

Great video! I was the AF 83-89. My first career-field was EW simulator tech and tail gun sim. I trained at Castle AFB and was stationed at Chanute AFB in Rantoul, Illinois. They moved the technical training to Chanute. Fun system to maintain, except for the tail gun system. It was all tube technology and was booger to cal and get ready for training classes. After 2 years they civil contracted my AFSC so I had to move on to something else, which was the F-111 Avionics Test Station.

Know this old boy who flew the B-52D from 1958-1980 (flew the B-36 from 1954-1957). Flew everything from Cold War Chrome Dome missions ("23-27 hours depending on winds") to Linebacker missions over 'nam ("about 20 hours from Guam and back"). Loves to talk about his days flying the BUFF ("Easy to fly, hard to park").

Thanks for the memories, I was a military brat my Dad was a navigator first with the B-36 then the B-52 , flew over 200 missions in Vietnam including operation linebacker once the pilot fliped rhe aircraft completely on its back to avoid SAM lost several friends dads. During the COLD WAR it was a very differant way of life my elementary school had a 600 person nuclear bunker just a few yards from the school. These men had to be strong knowing that if they were called on to do their jobs their families would face nuclear attack. Thanks for memories both good and bad.

I was there at Castle AFB from 71 to 74, then went on to work at Sante Fe RR for 34 years. I was thinking that the SF rails ran into Castle. SF is now BNSF. I worked in the AR shop while there at Castle. The first job I had was jacking up a 52 with hand jacks. I was nick named P whip, cause the pilots used to write up aircraft wont fly level after they transferred fuel from one wing to the other, so I would always sign that off. That sure made one wing heavy. Sure brings back memories looking at the cockpit.

Great video. Reminds me of my time at March AFB in the late 1970s when the B52-Ds roared so loudly at take-off that you could hear windows rattle all over the base. They had a huge vertical stabilizer that made the aircraft look like a huge killing monster...which is what it was supposed to be. I noticed in the video that the tail gun was removed. I guess they decided that it was obsolete. I assumed by now that only the "H" models remain. They were having wing crack problems even then. God bless these young men and women who serve.

Back in 1984, I maintained both a B-52G and B-52H Flight Simulators at Castle AFB, Atwater, California. What an experience!!! Learned from airforce pilots how to fly and manage cockpit systems. I found the fuel system to be the most complicated of any aircraft I've ever seen. The Flight Station was a separate trainer and was easy to learn compared to the Offensive and Defensive Stations. The Flight Station was on a 6-DOF motion platform while the Offensive Sta. was on a 3-DOF. Defensive was motionless. The trainer could integrate any 2 stations, or all 3 stations to simulate an abbreviated 12-hour SAC mission. The facility also had a KC-135 refueler boom trainer integrated with a complete cockpit on 6-DOF motion.

Major at 10 years? That's fast! B52D had a "Big Belly" modification which enabled it to carry (if I remember correctly) 74 500lb dumb bombs in the bomb bay, and 24 750lb on hard points under the wings. SSgt, 379th Bomb Wing (Heavy), Strategic Air Command, USAF 1968-1972
