I remember back in 1977 when a friend told me about a band that he was getting in to. It was the B52’s. I thought it was some sort of hard rock band because the name conveyed wars and explosions. He had heard Planet Claire and was taken by it. I heard it and went and got a copy of the album. You have to place yourself in that time to really appreciate the guts it took to make that music, and to admit you were a fan of it. 46 years later and I’m still a fan. I lost track of that friend.

One of my favorite bands! I first saw the B-52s in April of 1989 on the cosmic thing tour. My three older sisters and myself went to this concert where we were outdoors on a lawn and we just danced and danced. I had just discovered the b-52's because of Cosmic Thing. My sister bought the tickets a year in advance. She decided to get there first two albums. When I heard Rock lobster then I really fell in love with the band! And no words can even say how incredible wild planet was. It's true the b-52's truly have their own sound. I would jam out to all their music on my sister's awesome sound system with Bose bass speakers! They are like the original party band. They were also the first band coined new wave. Their music was an inspiration for many artists including Kurt Cobain and John Lennon. I will love them always. 🙂

I was attending UC Berkeley. At noon when I was rushing between classes a U-Haul or Ryder rental truck parked on the plaza next to the student union (where Bears Lair is located). I saw a band playing out of the truck and on some equipment that was set up around the truck. Yeah, it was the B-52's. I had known about them because their music was getting airplay on the local radio stations. I remember the DJs introducing Planet Claire and Rock Lobster with words to the effect: "Here's an odd group from the east coast. Their music has a beat but the songs may not be to your liking, songs with titles like Rock Lobster and Planet Claire." Come to think of it, I recorded the songs on to a blue cassette and I still have that cassette somewhere in the basement. Anyway, they played really really loud, which I figure was intentional, marketing the band's concert by getting people campus-wide to move their asses over to the plaza to see what all the commotion was about. I have to guess that the University's administration didn't take too kindly to this "weirdo band singing oddball songs about planets and lobsters." I remember Fred marketing the hell out of the upcoming concert. Because he knew students would be cycling through every few minutes as we all had to make it to class, he kept saying "get your tickets" for the concert. Of course I did as Fred commanded. I gathered up all the money me and my GF had, and immediately went to the hall and bought two tickets for the concert. And what a concert it was. IMO you really don't know anything about the B-52's sound unless or until you have watched them live. Most of the time I was fixated on Ricky, who was an absolute joy to watch as he tirelessly played his guitar. I remember he wore a pleasant muted green-patterned shirt (like my mom would get me at Christmas instead of a cool toy). He was slightly hunched over and just kept wondrously playing his guitar.* I also enjoyed watching Fred perform, his antics, prop symbolism, and moving around like an over-wound Ken doll on acid, and loved his using little devices to make sounds matched to the music being played. *Tragic we lost Ricky so early in his gifted life. Surreal seeing everyone on stage here, no one knowing, not even Ricky, that in less than two years AIDS would claim his life. That was back in the beginning, when science knew nothing about how to combat the scourge killing thousands.
