Did you use the plastic or aluminum replacement housing? I see they make an aluminum one and i like metal better than plastic. Especially aluminum since it cools faster. Thoughts?

EXCELLENT VIDEO! I searched about a dozen other vids, but your video was the best, and had the EASIEST, and most efficient methods! Anyone with some patience, basic knowledge of how to use tools, so as to avoid stripping hardware or breaking important components, and using the SAME TOOLS as you used, in the order shown, should be able to do this job. Although I was able to skip a couple of your steps - my decision due to lack of certain tools/equipment/patience - it STILL took ME a little bit longer, mostly 'cause I didn't have ALL the long hex tools. One quick trip to the nearby Home Depot and $25 later, that was taken care of. Also, someone lost my 3-ton jack handle, but some clever DIY maneuvering got the job done. I tried the jack that comes with my car, but it seemed too flimsy, and as clumsy as I am, my mind went overboard with possibilities as to how I might kick that sucker over and have the car squash my head or leg, kneecap, etc. I look forward to seeking out your other videos on other Audi/VW repairs! I have ONE QUESTION, if I may: Is it a sign of this part needing replacement if the motor oil comes out milky-ish, like a YooHoo? I had done an oil change, 300 miles ago, but my oil still looked "milky" when I drained it. Other than my question, Well Done, and THANK YOU!

I viewed several videos and read some DIYs and this video has the most efficient repair. There are some others where they are disconnecting all sorts of stuff that I didn't need to do. A few comments on this video. • Take a few photos or a movie of the layout -- you'll forget some of the bracket orientations • Disconnect battery (or make sure to cover alternator cable end when you disconnect it) • Drain oil once you are sure you are going through with job. Leave plug out because you will spill coolant into oil ports and you want it to come out • No need to pre-drain coolant -- just accept that you'll lose about a gallon when you pull the cooler off. • No need to remove line on oil cooler • Throttle body is easy to take off if you need to -- but not necessary. I didn't take it off but it might have helped with visibility. • You might be able to work with the rigid plastic line in place -- mine was a pain to remove but I got it off (and broke some locking tabs) • A screwdriver can be used to gently tap the electrical connectors out of the bracket. • Add a touch of grease when you slide those connectors back in that bracket • Disconnect alternator cable • No need to disconnect anything on coolant resevoir -- just place it out of way. Clamp off hose prior to pulling oil cooler • Where needed, cover air intakes/hoses to avoid dropping something in there. • Take your time with the blind hex-head bolts and make sure not to strip them • Once you have the old parts off coolant will continue to drip slowly, probably because the clamp on the reservoir hose is not perfect -- you'll want to go ahead and get the new parts on to stop the dripping • Might as well replace the oil sender as it's cheap and easy to do. Tools you may not have • Triple-square socket set • Long hex sockets • Magnet on a handle -- helps grab some bolts you can barely touch • Mirror • Wobble extension and short hex socket (helped me with the filter housing top right bolt) • Something to catch the coolant that is going to splash everywhere. I put some painters plastic in a low, wide cardboard box and placed my drip tray inside of that. • Coolant is poisonous in small quantities and your dog may lap it up -- be careful. • Plenty of degreaser -- may as well clean up all the gunk when you have the parts out, plus the bottom of the engine so you can make sure you've fixed the problem. • Torque wrench. 11 ft-lb is what the housing and cooler get re-installed with.

@CraftyWorkshopBuilds
@CraftyWorkshopBuilds 2 жыл бұрын
Much respect! How did creamy sludge leaked into the cooling tank? That milky substance is usually because coolant and oil has mixed. The car not going into drive, that's a different problem. You need to figure what causing oil and coolant to mix, hopefully it's not a blown head gasket. Yea, you'll need to flush the cooling system, the oil cooler might get clogged depending on how bad the milky substance is.

Note to others. Hard to find that long hex socket, recommend the one form the link. However, is it 5.5? Also stay away from round head “ball” hex tools. The worst. Lastly, a reminder to not over tighten that oil filter. If you think about it. All that pressure and effort to remove, what started my leaking woes to begin i believe. Then again, old car haha.

@@kimimaro7z I recommend changing the entire housing. Sometimes the leak is caused by a cracked housing, but you won't be able to tell until you remove it. Also, I've replaced just the gasket already and it still leaked again.
