Typical not to "bury" fire because it traps heat and embers. Someone would have to come back and open it all up to ensure it was out before leaving. That's just one of the reasons to scrape away from fire.. 2 cent's

But wouldn’t it have been safer for man and machine if he turned off the road 20’ further, and avoided the driving through fire thing? I also wondered why he crossed that little creek with the machine centered up on that drain pipe. It was evident that the belly was dragging on it, and right after it broke free you could hear something slam into the drain! Not sure if this had a ripper or plow mounted on it, but I bet it did, and that’s what slammed! Probably unnecessary damage from that maneuver! Maybe the fire chief was looking for a good way to request a new dozer!

My only question is why not use the dozer to smother the flames with dirt instead of cutting breaks in a situation like this one where the fire is burning across relatively flat ground. While I understand the purpose of cutting fire breaks this looked like a situation where the dozer could be used to speed up the work of the other fire crews. Make it easier for hose to be laid and more rapid suppression of the fire. Have type 3 engine crews follow behind the dozer and as the operator buries part of the fire the guys behind could then soak the line the dozer is making. Just a thought made from observation.

There are many different tactics we use when fighting fire in the dozer. The least favored one is to burry the fire. The reason is all the heat and smoldering Vegetation gets stuck under the pile. It creates a lot of additional work when we overhaul the fire. It takes the dozer and a engine crew with water to get everything put out. It is better to make the dozer line next to the fire so the fire run out of fuel. A clean burn.

Had a bunch of cold line and putting line around extinguished fires. Pretty boring videos. Then had a new Chief that made all my videos go to the PIO(Public Information Officer). Had a bunch of fires in 2019 and 2020 but just wasn’t allowed to put them up due to I was working on a Fire Department Equipment. I hit my 30 years of service for the fire department this month so I will be retiring. If I feel like it I might go work for a contractor that has a fire contract.

Jon. Yes to a certain extent. There has been times where the Dozers temperatures has been pushed to just under the alarm temperatures. At which point my tactics would change to get the Dozer cooled down. Then get back at it. We definitely need to be aware of what type of fuel we are working in. The light flash fuels are about the max for that dozer to handle. The Dozer can’t take the heat of heavier fuels.

@bnadit1949
@bnadit1949 6 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct, for this fuel model a disc would be the most effective tool to use. The problem is unlike other states California has a very large range of fuels. This dozer might start his day here in mid height seasonal grass and end up being sent out of county later that night to fight a fire in Dense timber stands in the mountains. Now do you see the problem? Most other states have similar geography and plant life throughout, California doesn't. The valley is large open grassland and as you get up in elevation Oak woodland starts to appear. Go a little higher and the Oak woodland fades into a mixture of Tan Oak, Scrub Oak, Manzanita, and Madrone with mixture pine trees. Depending on elevation and water availability year round you'll either end up in dense chaparral or pine forests. That doesn't even talk about the micro climates that are all over near the coast and lakes. So while a disc might be the most effective tool for the grasslands you have to remember it is not about what is most effective in one part of the state, but what is most effective for all fuels throughout the state. m penick You have apparently fallen into the age old trap of stereotyping, pity that you did, because if you hadn't then maybe you would have seen the logic Dozer1642's assertion. Hopefully you are logical enough to read through my comment and see that while cletrac12c is correct in his statement for the fuel type displayed in the video it is by far the least effective in California as a whole. Nellson Stout He never claimed that California was great. Where did you find that in his statement? It is no surprise to those in the wildland fire community that California gets mutual aid from all over the nation. There is simply no way that the state and local governments can provide service and defense to every house during a major wildland fire. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that California has a massive number of homes in the WUI area. Out of state mutual aid is a very good thing to have as it allows others to get experience they otherwise wouldn't get and builds up relations in case help is needed the other way around. I'll never understand how people become so bigoted when there has been no violence or atrocity committed against them by the group they defame, but I guess if it were reasonable it would be bigoted.

Bnadit well said I agree no point in having a dozer set to deal with one fuel than send it out else where and have to set it up for another type it's easier and faster to to use something that will be effective in a situation I'm not sure how they do it here in Ontario but I know we have a lot of wild fires that are considered out of control and some that don't effect lives or property so they let them burn themselves out
