Gayatri was first trained in Carnatic music by Sri Mangat Natesan and Sri Vamanan Namboodiri at Trichur, Kerala.Later she started training in Hindustani music under Dr. Alka Deo Marulkar in Pune, Maharashtra and later under Pandit Vinayaka Torvi in Bangalore. She is also a Hindustani classical music singer, a Bhajan singer and has given Hindustani concerts and programs based on film songs abroad. She has sung 500 movie songs and has also sung and given music for a new album for the Art of Living foundation which was released in September 2006 by HMV worldwide. She recently sang for an album by Ilayaraja, Thiruvasagam, which was released by Sony Music. Since 2017, Gayatri withdrew from film music industry and started focussing on gazals.[1]

इस ग़ज़ल की पूरी अदायगी में ग़ौरतलब बातें- ग़ज़ल की लहर जो ज़ज़्बातों की बारीकियों से गुज़रती हुई दिल के मकां तक पहुंचती है। ग़ज़ल की ज़मीन जिस पर वो पसर जाती है। उसका पहरन और उसमें हरक़तों की कशीदेकारी। पके हुए साजिंदों की कानों को सहलाने और गुदगुदाने वाली सुरीली संगत का कमाल। गायकी मेंआवाज़ का रेशमी एहसास जो हर ज़ज़्बात को करीने से छूता हुआ दिल की गहराइयों में ठहर जाता है। हर साज़ को अलग अलग से और फ़िर सबको गायकी से मिला कर सुनने पर जो लुत्फ़ आता है किसी भी किमाम से सजी गिलोरी के नशे से भी बढ़कर होता है। ग़ज़ल के बोल गहरे असर के साथ आते लगते हैं। फुरसत को संवारती है ये ग़ज़ल।

I was hurt when some unwanted comments were made by very very few music lovers/viewers in comments box below regarding pronouncing of few words while singing this Gazal. They all forget that she is non Muslim and secondly she may be from South India.. may be Kerala where many of the people can't speak good hindi.. forget about urdu. In such case how do you expect her every urdu word pronunciation may be perfect. Instead these people should concentrate on her singing. What a magical and magnificent voice she has got. We are lucky to get opportunities now a days from many of the non Muslim girls singers from present Generation. We all should make Hats off to them and give them all BEST Blessings for fulfiling our music listening desire to fullest extent. Nothing more to say.

It's not about her being from South India or her being a non-Muslim. This is about respecting the poet, the composers, the language and the giants before her, whose rendition she sings. If the Devi ji of sangeet herself, a Marathi girl, (Lata Ji) would learn from her Ustaad the proper diction, then the younger generations MUST follow the footsteps of those legends, our gurus. Pick any song of Lata Ji, Asha Ji, Mohd Rafi, Kishore Da, Mehdi Hasan and you'll see whether the words are in Udru or Hindi, they do the utmost justice to the poets. Google what Lataji and Ashaji say about it. This is why I have utmost respect for Sonu Nigham, who actually took the trouble to seek out Ustaad to learn proper diction. Personally for me, incorrect pronunciation kills the song.
