South Indian singing in Urdu so well, wow! amazing. Gayatri's vocal accuracy and ease with which she sings this in Raga Jhinjhoti is fantastic. The tabla player and harmonium players are out of this world. Just listen to the Tabla thekas and the Harmonium fast sargams. Piano keyboard player introduced some beautiful variations, and in the end they way they all sink up on the Samm is truly unbelievable. Specially Gayatri who is so effortlessly precise to get the word "rang" in "Gulon mein rang" hit exaxtly on the samm. At least, I heard that as the samm (beginning of beat cycle) in Keharva taal (or some 8 beat cycle they're playing). I'm so happy to hear this beautiful style of music that muslims contributed to India and Pakistan among many other contributions -- today we're outcasts. Too bad we have such short sighted petty fighting and hatred being spread among us by our religious fanatics on either side. This music kills all that hatred and brings all of us together. The gazal was written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz who was jailed in Pakistan for going against the religious and tyrannical fanaticism there. Faiz was sending us a hidden message in his gazal, telling us all to come to the garden when the flowers are in bloom. He says: Gulon mein rang bhare, baad e nau bahaar chale -- Faize remembers the old days when In the garden (India/Pakistan) there are many flowers (many kinds of people) who are in full bloom of the beatiful parts of their cultures, while a gentle breeze (rule of government) blows. Faiz goes on to say : "Qafas (cage) udaas hai yaaron" (the cage of religious and communal intolerance and tyranny is a sad place, my friends). "Saba se kuch toh kahoo (say something to the breeze (the current atmosphere in the country) blowing), kahin bahr e khuda (for the sake of God), aaj zikr e yaar karo (today mention our old friendships). It's a beautiful message of peace and tolerance that Faiz was trying to spread even from his jail cell. His gazal became so hugely popular and the message hit the people so powerfully that he became a threat to the government and was jailed. Just like many reporters who dared question the BJP were or are still in jail in India today. Faiz's gazal is so relevant to India today.

I can't find the words to describe what a great job Gayathri Asokan has done. I have heard many singers sing this ghazal, but no one even came close to her excellence, her perfect voice, her perfection in pronunciation of Urdu, her respect for this great ghazal. I am pretty sure, Mehdi Sahab and Faiz Sahab are proud of her in heaven as much as I am. I am from Pakistan, and I send my respect and applauds to Gayathri gee. Keep up the good work !
