Well.....the take away I get from this is the bike course really isn't that safe....

Of course it's not "safe", but that's sport and sport has risks. The swim leg is the most dangerous as shown by all the deaths that have occurred in the water. But the risk management team put measures in place to make it the safest they can for the athletes - eg warning signs on the road, the 12m gap between riders, water safety, etc.
