My grandma immigrated from Poland to US in late 1920s. We called her busia. I have always called it gołabki.

I first ran into the word "busia" in high school from a girl who had Polish grandparents. She insisted that "busia" was grandmother and "dziadzia" was grandfather. I spoke to my dad (born to Polish parents) and he told me these were wrong. I assumed it was just one person that thought this. 20 years later, there are tons of people on Facebook that claim the same thing. I could be a case of a dialect that died with mass immigration or died after the war. There's no evidence of "busia" in Poland.

You are correct that "Busia" is a shortened version of "Babusia" or also spelled "Babusya." Consider the history of where most Polish immigrants to the U.S. in the 20th century came from, that is Galicia. "Busia" is shortened from the Western Ukrainian word for grandmother which is "Babusia" or sometimes spelled "Babusya." You see, in what is now southern Poland, within the area of Galicia, there were once a great number of Ukrainians who lived there. Many Poles were influenced by Ukrainian culture as were many Polish immigrants to the U.S. and vice versa for Ukrainians. WWII changed all that and the Ukrainians were removed from their land and moved elsewhere. I will never understand the resistence to admit this historical fact. BTW, did you know that Galicia means "Land of the Gauls?" Spain also has a "Galicia" region. In ancient times, Gauls (also known as Celts) inhabited huge areas of mainland Europe. In Polish Galicia, there were also Germans (the Vandal tribe), Jews, White Croatians (an ancient Kingdom) and others.

The title reminded me of the movie titled "Amar, Akbar, Anthony". Lol
