I don't think he would have done much in CBJ, except help them win another 10 games at best. Johnny Hockey is a sellout and devil's rejects. Patrick Laine too is a massive failure on all levels. Both these two players are super lazy and don't really care about winning, they just love collecting fat paychecks.

I remember when Patrick Roy resigned the week before the Avalanche started training camp in 2016. Promoted Bednar immediately, but he had to use Roy's staff. He also didn't have enough time to get the team comfortable with the system. And we all know how rough that season was... now it worked out long term, but that first season was ROUGH Best of luck, Columbus. You're gonna need it

Tell me what happens at your place of employment if your boss says, "Let me see your * personal * phone". HR would be inundated with calls. There's a way, multiple actually, to "get to know your players" that can be done in a professional and upright manner. Asking to see their personal cell phone and pictures contained therein is NOT one of them.
@trentreimer130
@trentreimer130 9 ай бұрын
Yep. Earlier reporting had me confused because it sounded like players were just asked to choose and share photos and I couldn't imagine how anyone found that invasive. Now it almost sounds like Babs expected to look through their phones himself, which is entirely different.

This is why THG is my go to source for hockey news coverage. While I'm sure he may have his biases as we all do, I have never heard him slander and/or discredit someone solely based off of their credentials/reputation/employer. Whether it be this issue or any other hockey related issue, he stays out of the gossip and waits until all info is presented before reporting on it. Other hockey “journalists” should take notes.

It was heavily rumored that a lot of the younger players were the ones who were uncomfortable with the whole ordeal. Older players like Jenner may be fine with it because it's something they've gotten used to, but when you've got a new generation of players making up most of the team, you at least got to try and be on the same level as them. Babcock has been coaching for a long time, and even in Toronto it was known that he can be quite out of touch with younger players. Honestly, good on the young guys for saying something. It doesn't matter if it's a work environment or not, never let anyone force you into doing something you're not comfortable with
@TheFusionmix
@TheFusionmix 9 ай бұрын
I have a suspicion that asking to see pictures would carry very different weight between established older or married veterans, than it would being directed at young guys. Asking to see family pics, offseason vacations, all that's normal. But with a young guy it could quickly turn into a way to pry into their 'character' and ask invasive questions, maybe to see if they've got pictures/snapchats of any girls they've been with, or if they have pictures with friends where they're drunk, or anything 'incriminating' in his eyes. Could be really really embarrassing. Even if that stuff becomes a distraction for a player, and they pull a Young Seguin midway through the season, you still don't handle it like this. More like a nosy parent who doesn't respect privacy than a coach or mentor figure.

Just gonna guess that Marty Walsh had something to do with this. Him traveling to Columbus personally was a huge red flag, and he's a very serious and effective guy. The NHL isn't used to guys like him, they're used to the boy's club and working things out in back room deals and at the 19th hole. The NHLPA isn't screwing around anymore, and Babcock found out first hand as an example to the rest of the teams.

They're from a generation that says whatever happens in the locker room, stays in the locker room. The younger kids have come of age where ex-players are carving out a voice for themselves through avenues like "Spittin' Chiclets" where they feel they can go that's not management, their leadership group, the union, or the traditional media whom they (with good reason) feel will cover up and sweep things under the rug by handling things internally.

When it comes to the "incident" it might not have been that bad but rather far too similar to what happened with Mitch. Pattern of behavior I think. Singling out players on the team, promoting unhealthy competition, maybe even overly aggressive or derogatory challenges to players could all constitute elements of an unhealthy workplace environment. I hate to say it as I think people can change if they want too, but very successful coaches like Quenville and Backcock won doing things "their way" and the inclination to revert to old habits can be too strong or too reasonable for them to fully embrace the changes the current NHL requires.
@hmmt225p

So, essentially what your saying, is the caliber of current NHL players and prospects are too soft. They can't handle firm instruction, criticism, or correction, no matter how correct it may be. I know, let's add a "cry-baby" box, next to the penalty box. That way when a player feels they are no longer safe, they can go to the little safe space and think about fondue, asparagus, and a gluten free diet....

The difference is Babcock is known for strange behavior like this. If Rod Brind'amour asks his players to show him private pictures on their phones and then ridicules them and taunts them for months if they refuse (which Babcock surely would have done) he deserves to be axed.
