Shannon, I have to tell you a story. A few years back, I was watching ESPN. And the discussion on ESPN was that the NHL/Hockey wasn't a 'real' game because one couldn't bet at a Sports Book. And as a Hockey fan, I was flabbergasted that 'betting' means it is a 'real' game. Seriously? Anyway, for me, Hockey is a Real Game and most SportsCasters don't know what they're talking about. Just thought I'd share that. Now look at all the betting! It MUST BE a Real Game now. HA!

@@Jasperdog3329that's because, in general, NFL players don't have to. Just a normal tackle will suffice ti target any area of the body. I laud the injury vagueness, i hope the players union is paying attention. In a sport where 4th liners are highly incentivized to take out stars for the rest of the playoffs, telling them where exactly to hit them has to be avoided. Idk if this helps, but I intern for a minor league hockey team, doing production. When I'm on the scoreboard for the broadcast, I usually have to count the shots myself. Then the league has their own shot count that I have to match, which isn't updated live. Mostly so when the broadcaster reads the shot count online, it doesn't contradict what the viewers see on screen. I don't just match the in-house shot count because it's usually wrong, and I have a better view of the game than the guy who handles the scoreboard in the rink. I'm sure the NHL has a similar setup, except their guy on the scoreboard probably isn't managing the broadcast, commercials, and inhouse graphics as well lol. There are off-ice officials who make the official shot count, but have other things to do than be on a broadcast graphics thing

Video idea for you: Talk about teams and their depth. First one for forwards then one for depth Ex. Right now Capitals forwards are front to back stacked, all 4 lines produce a similar amount of offense, and the 4th line being a little behind in counting stats makes sense because they have all the d zone starts. That also happens to be the best shutdown line in the NHL. So, analyze and tell us: What teams have great depth and what teams are relying on one or two lines? Because stars win presidents trophies, but depth wins cups. Thank you Pinholes Graham for making me notice that, great video on it for "the best defensive forward in the NHL" I want to give him the plug he earned.

Analytics has had the biggest effect on the defensive game. The number of blocked shots by players reducing shots getting to the goalie. Previously the duties of D-men was to clear the front of the net of opponents so the goalies had a clear view of the puck. Now goalies in many instances can't see the puck because of so many bodies in front. It will only change if a player receives a shot that is debilitating or worse.

Personally I think the NHL should tracking Shots AT Net. I think that's a better reflection of the game flow. A breakaway shot wide is ignored as if it's nothing. While a lazy shot wide deflected by a d-man into the net is golden. Doesn't tell the true story.

Not just you. It's EXACTLY what's happening. Not NHL, but Team Canada at world Juniors had THREE in the same game because the player about to get hit, shimmied just enough out of the way to get the knee on knee from the player who was going to deliver a clean straight-to-the-body hit. IMO, the rule needs to be reviewed so that the player giving the hit can be called explicitly if he sticks the leg out or reaches for the knee-on-knee.

Your point about talent dilution is spot-on. You have guys in the minors who would've been 2nd/3rd line guys in the past. For all the criticism of expansion into non-traditional hockey markets, you're seeing more players coming from those states, or countries not known for their hockey, or smaller hockey countries who maybe put out a handful of later round draft picks in a good year and now are sending several players every year, including top round draft picks. Looking at this year's world juniors, the vast majority of Finland had been drafted, Latvia had a couple guys, Germany had 1, Kazakhstan had 1, Slovakia had several, Czechia and Sweden were mostly drafted, the Swiss had a few, and most of the US has been drafted (though, the one player from Florida hasn't been, 2 guys from Cali were). You have players from France, the Netherlands, and even Australia. The game is growing in the UK. In recent years you had players from Korea, Nigeria, Italy, Brazil, and the Bahamas. 43 US and DC states have produced at least 1 NHL player. Of the 10 from Arizona, only 1 predates the Coyotes' arrival (and that doesn't count Matthews, who grew up there, but was born in California). Florida's seen a spike since the Panthers and Lightning arrived. Georgia and Alamaba have produced players. Quite a few current guys from Texas, while the Hurricanes have brought a few from NC, and California's become a hotbed of hockey.

I’ve noticed that the players are so good now, it seems to come down to defense, and shutting down zone entry, and jamming up the dump and chase. Not that we are seeing the trap era, but like you said, teams are turning the defense up to 10 or offense up to 10, and both sides adjust quickly. It’s great hockey, and also frustrating hockey. Even teams struggling to win look good at times.

I'm 68 and I agree with you that the quality of NHL hockey is the best I've ever seen. After the Gretzky era (the previous best level of NHL hockey) I mostly watched high school and college hockey (Minnesota - both boys and girls) for a few decades. NHL hockey was BORING clutch/grab/interfere/remove ALL of the skill from the game. Now, ALL levels of hockey are great to watch!

I’ve watched games and noticed shots landed on net not being acknowledged in box score / play by plays on nhl or ESPN. My thought is the league and the sportsbooks are too cozy for bettors’ comfort or possibly the league is now not considering a shot to be a shot if goalie went out of his way to deflect and it would not have landed on net if the goalie did not go out of his way

My guess for injury vagueness I the betting companies and the nhl have met up and talked about them not being vague could lead to a major reinjury and hurt season long bets and team bets.

Maybe gambling is altering the shot totals but probably it is the use of analytics. The accuracy of any analysis is the accuracy of the underlying data. I would imagine other metrics like hits and shots from certain zones are also cleaned up. Wait until the playoffs and cross checking and roughing and slashing are not penalties.

If you try to bank the puck of (I don't know how to say it in english) the goalie to the net, does it count as a shot to the net? And if not, can there be multigoal games without any shots to the net (in theory) without even being on goals?

Good video......👍 I remember the days when there were a lot more in season moves as well. I remember the Nolan and Ozolinsh trade. Then a short while later they picked up Bodger to basically replace Ozolinsh's departure. Joe Thornton was traded to the Sharks essentially 1/4 of they way though the season. So far this year the Sharks have picked up Liljegren and traded away Blackwood in season. It seems some of these in season trades only come from a position kf a team being in dire need early on or someone is ready to move on from a player.

Really respect your opinion on this since you've been watching for so long. I'd be interested in "3rd liners who could be higher in the lineup" if you're looking for video ideas. Since I wasn't watching in the 90's, I'd love to hear how bad it got as well.

Negative reporting is sooo prevalent on nhl network . Example rangers suck. But everyday they are discussed. Vegas #1 mentioned but fleeting. East coast bias is a real thing

As someone who has lived on both coasts I couldn’t agree more. In NY, hockey is reported on everyday in multiple outlets, social media, newspaper apps, the local news on tv. Meanwhile out here in CA, you would never know the Ducks existed. Even the Kings just get a final score mention. But they still report on something related to Kobe like every day. Dude is dead.

With the size and speed of today's players, the small NHL ice surface seems to have shrunk. When we see Olympics played on the larger ice surface, the game seems more exciting to me. Do you think the quality of the game would be better if the NHL went with the larger ice surface ?
@dennish.7708

Agree, but it won’t happen. The cost to alter the rinks is astronomical, and will cause the removal of expensive seating. I also don’t think most fans would appreciate the beauty of more wide-open hockey. They want big guys on a small surface, smashing one another.

1. apply the ref standard to this, if it was a shot in real time, it was a shot. 2. this is how goals are scored now, it sounded like it was a critique rather than an observation 3. this is a result of salary cap and no trade/movement clauses 4. I hear the "it was that second crosscheck that got the call", like you said, what about the first one? 5. the maths don't lie I guess 6. gotta find that balance 7. living in a non hockey area all I hear about from people are the negative events 8. I think the PA would fight having to be specific about injuries for gambling 9. soft is so subjective and bias not worth the discussion 10. true, often the next years 1st overall pick is named before the current season starts
