Fun fact: this movie got both a German dub and a separate Austrian dub (we speak German in Austria as well, but with a different accent). Was pretty wild to see farm animals on the big screen actually talk like the people around me as a kid.
@hopelessgeek37763 ай бұрын
And an excellent Swiss German dub! Which resulted in me spending my childhood convinced it was a Swiss production until I saw the actor elsewhere 😂
@stephjovis34692 ай бұрын
I remember that and the conversation around it so well. Yet I`ve never bothered watching it. No idea if I`d find the austrian dubbing these days. I don´t usually wanna watch stuff dubbed but I suppose in that case it would be fun. At least for a few minutes :) .

Considering that Babe is nearly 30 years old it really does hold up very well. They probably could go in and "litely" CGI any "seams" out so that all the puppetry is not removed, just "cleaned up" kinda like what they did with the movie Coraline which used stop motion and then CGI cleaned up the "seams." I'd kinda like to maybe see them do that, then rerelease it next year for its 30th Anniversary. My 2 favorite performances of James Cromwell is this movie and Star Trek: First Contact. He is SO good and SO different in those 2 roles, wow! Thanks for sharing!

That opening joke was great and I guess it's better than "Squeal like a pig." Babe is one of those movies I've only seen all the way through once, but it's on TV a lot and I find myself watching parts of it. It really does stand up.

I've heard that, since this movie, James Cromwell has become a major supporter for animal rights and has even been arrested for some of his protests. And I say "I've heard" because it's been told to me. I haven't done a ton of research on it.
@Rmlohner3 ай бұрын
I highly recommend the sequel Pig in the City as well. Some fans of the original hate it because James Cromwell doesn't come back for the most part, but for me the fact that Hogget isn't there fits perfectly with the darker, more dangerous tone that George Miller does so well, and there's still room for a similar humor.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. In a theater full of almost exclusively adults, there was enthusiastic applause at the end. I frequently quote "That'll do pig," and once in a while find an occasion to throw out "Christmas is carnage!"

Fun review! A lot of people don't realize that Babe was produced by George Miller, creator of the Mad Max movies. I watched a wild video essay comparing the plight of both Max in the Wasteland and Babe being a pig bound for slaughter, and how they transcend their roles as consumable things to being individuals with agency. And the sequel goes WAY darker. I hope you get a chance to watch/review that one too!

I have AuDHD and one of my longest standing verbal stims is humming "If I had words" (the song that James Cromwell sang to Babe). I saw the film when I was a kid, when it came out in theaters, and that tune has been in my head ever since. More often than not, it's a comfort stim and tends to surface when I'm feeling down or overwhelmed during the rare moments I don't have any music playing but I'm trying to concentrate on something and it always makes me feel more capable of handling whatever it is I'm working on. Amusingly, it wasn't til just a couple years ago (I'm 39) that I bothered looking it up and discovered it's an ACTUAL song. There's a clip here on KZbin of Scott Fitzgerald & Yvonne Keeley singing it on Top of the Pops in 1978. Still vastly prefer James Cromwell's version though.

I love watching this film whenever it ends up on TV. I'm surprised you've never somehow stumbled across it, but I can understand it having gone under some people's radar. Aged fairly well all these years later, even in 2024, unlike some films even just a decade old for me. But probably nostalgia talking, I suspect.

of note, reason C of why so much of practical effects were replaced by digital was because the former was well unionised and the later wasn't.

I have yet to rewatch this movie. And its sequel Babe: Pig In The City, which is strangely darker than the first movie. I watched that one on VHS a lot as a kid for that reason. 😅 Plus, it’s directed by George Miller AKA Mad Max movies director. It has sweet and mostly intense moments, almost like a live action Don Bluth movie. I might be over selling it, but that’s what I remember.

Baa ram ewe! Baa ram ewe! I was obsessed with this movie after getting the vhs when I was about 9 years old, I loved it to bits though my little animal loving heart also found a lot of it deeply upsetting! But you have just reminded me that my dvd of it broke a few years back and I never replaced it so I’m off to order myself a new one.

Such a coincidence I saw the sequel out of context just the other day (it was playing on tv, I'm on holiday) and now I kind of love it for how niche it feels. (Apparently it wasn't as well recieved for being edgier but for the same reasons I like Indiana Jones 2 more for being a bit more bloody). Long story short, it's both the sort of movie I get why people would be thrown off by it, but it feels like a personal cult classic for the "what am I watching, wait I think I get it" arty metaphoric experience I had with it. Also, George Miller directed it and that's the last thing I expected. I was convinced it had to be some weird French film that got dubbed, but nope. Australian. Mad Max guy. (I'm Australian).
