A few year's ago I applied for a job at Sevruga (Waterfront) The salary was commission based too and obviously based on tips, I spent so much money traveling there and on my 3rd night I got chased away just like that with no explanation whatsoever, no contract, absolutely nothing in place. I hope their payment structure has changed.

She made me think back to the days when I was myself a student (I’m now in my sixties), and also took waitressing jobs during the holidays to earn much needed cash. It’s hard work, long hours, and the pay wasn’t great, even then. But- we know that if we worked hard, and served the customers well, we could earn a nice extra. Can’t believe how badly the conditions have deteriorated since then! Utterly shocking, and I truly hope law enforcement will put a stop to the exploitation of vulnerable people.

This happens at most restaurants, go and inspect Cape Town restaurants where staff have to pay for missing cutlery, tips are being kept by owners and only a percentage paid after a couple of weeks. Monthly salaries is paid up to three weeks overdue.
