Tim travels to Cape Town in South Africa to cover a neighbourhood dispute of a different kind. On one side, the baboon residents who have been there for a million years ... on the other, their human neighbours who are moving in. It all started when people began building on prime land belonging to the local baboons and naturally the primates took it very personally responding with a crime wave of carjackings, muggings and home invasions. This is the real-life version of planet of the apes!

I live on a farm outside George. For 40 years our local troop of baboons caused minimal damage to our garden. Then a troop of vandals displaced from the town, where they feasted on rubbish bins, invaded and displaced our troop. We discouraged the newcomers with bomb crackers, but they quickly learned to disregard these. Soon they began to raid several times a week. If windows were left slightly open they would simply rip open the window frame which would then need to be replaced. They did tremendous damage inside the houses. Dogs were severely mauled and one dog was killed. After a while they would watch and if we were in the garden on the other side of the house they would enter. i would walk into the house and find baboons inside Our position was untenable. I asked several farmers with orchards in remote mountains how they solved the problem, The reply was invariably "we shoot 1 or 2, whereafter they leave us alone for many months, then they return and we repeat the process." Obtaining a permit from Cape Nature, I reluctantly trapped and shot one. They left us alone for a year. Then I found 2 in the house and shot one. They have now left us alone for another year, except for raiding some fruit trees some distance from the house. However they still raid others in the neighbourhood. This troop has grown so large as a result of scavanging that I think they may need to be culled eventually.

@DesertSession93- I'm not sure if you've ever been near baboons or not, but these are dangerous animals. The males have 3-4 inch canine teeth that are as sharp as razors, and they are stronger than us. They can also run like the wind and have vertical leaps of at least 10-15 feet. The females and youngsters aren't as dangerous, but the males can easily grab and kill babies. They are also capable of severely injuring or even killing adult humans, though they usually don't like to risk more than a raiding type of attack, which can consist of knocking you down or giving you a quick and vicious bite before running away. What would you do if you suddenly came face to face with an adult male baboon in your own yard or house?

That's what I was thinking. Use preventative measures, like burglar bars, & or electric barriers. But give them your food waste. Everyone put their non food refuse in animal proof containers, & everyone take their food waste to designated area(s) for the baboons. And like you said maybe put up a vinyard or something for them. You know a multi faceted approach.
