After feeding the babies, the often lapse into what we call a milk coma - a deep sleep with a full belly.

@Megabattie7 жыл бұрын
No they don't. It would be worrying if they did. If I do my job right, they're fit and ready for life in the wild and they don't want anything go do with humans. The babies go to creche to learn how to be bats, and to interact with other bats and learn batty etiquette. They turn into feral little bastards who are perfectly equipped for life in the wild.

I've been wondering this, but if you would not like to reply to these questions, i understand... 1. Have you ever been bitten by a bat? 2. Which bat is your favourite? 3. What gave you the idea to work with bats? 4. How did you feel when you first handled a bat I will be so happy if you can answer these questions, but it's your choice!
@Megabattie8 жыл бұрын
+Rosie Low 1: Yes I have. They bite hard and don't like to let go. You have to let them go in order for them to let you go. Both times I have been significantly bitten (more than a nip) it has been my fault. Poor handling or carelessness. 2: Grey-Headed Flying-Foxes - my absolute fave. 3: I fell into doing bats by accident. I wanted to join a wildlife organisation to do birds - to do chicks, but the vet said my birds would be exposed to infection from wild birds, and that I should do possum joeys. At the rescue course I was shown the option of doing baby bats. I never looked back. I do bats pretty much exclusively.
@Megabattie8 жыл бұрын
+Rosie Low 4: I can't remember. First adult - I was scared - it was a big adult male tangled in fruit tree netting and he was really cranky and really strong and really bitey. Baby: I think I rescued one off a dead mum on the ground. I was more occupied in getting it sorted out and giving it a drink to think of anything else.
@rosielow5278 жыл бұрын
Megabattie Thank you for replying. When i'm twelve (next year) My dad's gonna take me out to help bats if there are any. But can i ask one last question, sorry if it bothers you. What can you feed a baby bat? Like, what type of milk or any juicy food?
@Megabattie8 жыл бұрын
+Rosie Low Depends on the type of bat Rosie. Depends on the age of the bat and what species and what it's natural diet is. I can't advice any further than that. Contact your local wildlife rescue organisation and see if someone will let you see what they do. You will need to be vaccinated for rabies to handle a bat.

I may have missed why you do this, but what is the reason for the pacifiers after feeding? Is it, like children, feeling of security, or would they suck on mama like this? You are doing an amazing job!
@Megabattie5 жыл бұрын
Babies are given pacifiers/dummies/binkies to help them feel more secure. In the wild, baby would be on mum’s nipple 24/7 for the first month, occasionally letting go to change sides or to have a stretch and stickybeak. A baby holds onto its mum’s nipple with tiny sharp backwards curving teeth, and knows by holding on, it can’t fall. I’m reliably informed that mum’s nipples have very few nerve endings which I feel is a sensible evolutionary blessing. A baby who has a pacifier firmly clenched in its teeth, is less grabby, less stressed, and much more relaxed and secure. Sometimes a baby, with the pacifier firmly clenched in their teeth for security, will just let go with their feet, with and be very surprised when they fall. For this reason when we put the babies on an airer or hang them somewhere, we make sure there is a sling or something to catch them if they let go. In the wild, mum’s nipple is attached to mum.

what kind of milk do the bats take?
@Megabattie9 жыл бұрын
Missmartini nz I use cows milk with extra calcium and glucose. Others use goats milk. Some use human baby formula. Some use a special flying fox milk replacer. It's personal preference, and everyone is convinced their milk is best. There are milk wars between carers. I don't care - milk is cheap, available and works well. I don't care what others use providing their pups grow well and arrive at creche healthy.

Megabattie thanks for your reply! I think ive watched nearly all of these wee videos now, i saw the tea drinking one after I asked about the milk :s Im in NewZealand so no batties here but my kiwi friends rave about the fruitbats theyve encountered in Oz, it seems too easy to fall in love with these fellas xxx

I would like to know why does a baby bat need a pacifier
@lclaney62406 жыл бұрын
She said the reason for giving a binky/pacifier is because, they'd normally be attatched to their mom's teat, and it's more comforting to them to have a replica when they no longer with mom.

i found a baby bat at school lying on the ground surrounded by people. i'm the only one brave enough to take it home. at first i gave it some water,now i want to feed it some milk. can i give it processed cow milk, cause it's really hard to find goat's milk.

+Leya ALs ROX Leya, are you in the USA? You need to contact Bat World Sanctuary or Lubee Bat Conservancy for advice. I'm in Australia - I don't even know what kind of microbats you have there. I don't know if you have an adult or a baby. They're very specialised animals to look after. If you got bitten or even the slightest scratch you MUST TELL YOUR PARENTS immediately. Some bats carry deadly viruses. Please consult an expert. If you are in Australia please email me: megabattieblue@gmail.com I can put you into contact with the local bat carers for advice and care. Don't feed with anything till you know what sort of bat you have.
@leyaalsrox69998 жыл бұрын
+Megabattie i live in KL,Malaysia.i did some research and it's a sac-winged bat but i don't know what type of species it is but it looks similar to the ecuadorian sac-winged bat. there's not much infomation on these bats. so i don't even know if it's an adult or a baby. all i know that the minimum size for a sac-winged bat in general is 3.5 cm and the maximum is 10cm and i'ts about 5cm.
@Megabattie8 жыл бұрын
+Leya ALs ROX I can't help you, but the microbat people may be able to help. Can you email me your email address? I can try to get you onto one of the microbat forum pages. Or you can try Australian Microbat forum FB group - it's a closed group so you will need to ask for admission.
@Megabattie8 жыл бұрын
+Megabattie The microbat people are waiting for you to join the group. Is your name Leya? I told them to look for that name. If you're not vaccinated then you need to not handle this bat. How old are you Leya?

+Megabattie actually,Latte(that's his name) past away yesterday.....he was active the night before. he injured both his wings. on the left,a little bit of his skin came off so you can see a little bit of his bone. he doesn't seem to mine,sometimes when it's covered in milk he would lick it. good to know it doesn't hurt much. on his right wing there's a little bit of dried blood,however he was tried to fly. he failed sometimes but it's still cute. he can't fly upwards but he can't downwards when i put him somewhere high. he flew like in a spiral shape,he also started doing those cute bat noises. it was so cute!!! the next day when i tried to feed him he only drinked a little like a few drops. he was getting weaker,i knew it was his time and it's coming any minute now......and right on cue......he left......i barried near where i barried my pet terrapin Spike. he was sick and doesn't want to eat too. i guess they both died the same way.....

they are precious. But I still don't like those open passies, they are sucking AIR into their tummies.
@Megabattie5 жыл бұрын
No they're not sucking air into their tummies. There are no holes in the pacifiers. They're teats without the holes. I make them - I know.
@yamiryushi9 жыл бұрын
So adorable! But I don't think its wise to put oh they may carry deadly diseases. All that does is fuel the ignorant bat haters into bat hating and killing even more.
@Megabattie9 жыл бұрын
People think because they see me handle the bubs in the video that it's safe for them to do so. It isn't. I put that they may carry deadly diseases because it's true. Snakes can kill you - so you're careful around snakes. Bats can kill you if you get bitten or scratched and don't seek treatment. I put the warning on so people think twice about handling bats. If I didn't, it would be negligence on my part.
@yamiryushi9 жыл бұрын
Megabattie I suppose when you put it that way. I just fear more bats being killed more then already I read from heat waves and ignorant people passing ridiculous laws thinking they are just pests when without them we wouldn't have most of our trees.
@Firellius9 жыл бұрын
Megabattie The only dangerous diseases bats can carry are blood diseases, right? Nothing that's transferrable via bacteria or viruses?
@Megabattie9 жыл бұрын
Bats can carry Australian Bat Lyssavirus which is a rabies variant. They can also carry Hendravirus - in Australia. They say the coronaviruses are carried by bats as well, as is Ebola and Nipah Virus. In Australia if you get bitten or scratched by a bat you need to get vaccinated for rabies. The virus is shed by the bats' brains in infected bats (less than half a percent of the population is infected, because it kills them). The virus needs to be present in the bat's saliva and the saliva needs to contact the human's nerve endings somehow either through a bite or scratch, saliva into an open wound, or through the mucous membranes.
@Firellius9 жыл бұрын
Megabattie Not exactly easy to transfer, fortunately. No terrible diseases that can be transferred merely by their presence.
