Baby Boomers Tribute "Marineland of the Pacific 1954-87" So Cal Palos Verdes Peninsula Home Movies
Marineland of the Pacific was a public oceanarium and tourist attraction located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula coast in Los Angeles County, California, USA. Architect William Pereira designed the main structure. It was also known as Hanna-Barbera's Marineland during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Marineland operated from 1954 until 1987, when it was purchased by the owners of SeaWorld San Diego. The new owners moved the popular killer whales and other animals to their San Diego facility and abruptly closed Marineland.
Special thanks to John Kelm for sharing your memories with us!

This was my first job working in the Camera Shop between the two big tanks. Loved it and had a blast with all the other college students! The funniest question I was asked once, "what time is the 3:00 whale show"? Fun times. If anybody remembers me, hit me up! Would love to go down memory lane!!

Yeah, I grew up in PV and my parents lived about a block away from Marineland when I was in high school and college. It really was a great place. My future wife worked at one of the tacky gift shops. For some reason, I remember running up and down the ramps on the sides of the building vividly. Oh, back to future wife. I used to bring her lunch at work (so I could use the employee's entrance. They knew me.) We used to sit out in the back near the sea lions and training tanks. Future wife taught an orca-in-training to shoot water at me on command. REAL funny . . .

To all of us who grew up in the South Bay, it was a magical, hometown kind of place. Growing up in Redondo Beach, we used to go to Marineland for school field trips.

I lived in Torrance and Marineland was a large part of my memories growing up. It was school field trips, family outings there, dates there, and just riving up there to ride the tower. I had lots of friends who worked there for years. Love going there to watch all the shows, enjoy the view and relax. They appeared to close almost over night. I think Sea World knew what they were getting with Bubbles and the owners of Marineland knew what they were getting for the cost and location of that property. It was certainly a sad time when it closed in the middle of the night. I will always have great memories from there. I have pictures of my husband and I on a date there.....many years ago!

What a wonderful video and perfect music selection. Thank you for the memories of my childhood visits to this magical place. The nostalgia makes me teary eyed. Coincidentally, Terranea holds a very special place in my heart as well.

Yes, they certainly DID abruptly close. The employees slowly began hearing about a possible purchase and facility closure. The next Monday whale trainers, penguin trainers, secretaries, ticket booth personnel, groundskeepers were greeted by chain locked gates. I've never since been to Sea World because of this. Anyone capable of doing this to people doesn't need my money.

Awesome video. Fond memories. I grew up going there once or twice a year with my family and on school trips. I was a kid of the 70's and 80's. Was very sad to hear when they closed. Drove by it many times after it closed and to see it fall into ruins.

I bought the book by Jim Patryla about Marineland. Look it up online- I'm sure there are more available to purchase. It's an awesome book - you will enjoy it. I keep mine on my coffee table so people can thumb through it... This is a great video for all of us Baby Boomers who remember Marineland. I grew up in Torrance just a few miles from Marineland. We went to Marineland a lot. I have a great picture of my father John Fawley, Jeff Hakman, and his dad Harry at Marineland in front of the underwater viewing windows. Had to have been taken in late 50's after Marineland opened. If you do not know who Jeff Hakman is - he went on to become one of the top surfers over in Hawaii where they moved to from Palos Verdes in the 60's. Marineland brings back such fond memories. We use to go to the tide pools up around near Marineland. There was a steep area off the cliffs where my father and Harry Hakman use to go skin diving. Our dad use to take us kids there and we'd practically slide down the hill to get to the water. Gosh I remember those fun times so well. Times have changed. Much older today - in my 60's but still live in the South Bay. We were very lucky to have experienced such a great place!!!

Yesterday i was watching an episode of the A-team called "Beneath the surface" and in the opening scene you can see a birds eye view of the two large tanks of marineland of the pacific. I was wondering how they made that shot but i see there was a big tower on the property so they must have taken it from there. We have a similar tower over here in The Netherlands called The Euromast located in Rotterdam that gives a great panaramic view over the city. I was just wondering why did they close it?

Great memories, and a very well done video. Thanks for posting this. At about the 5:08 mark I recognize the swim-through reef exhibit in the lower left. I'm happy to say I went on that once. I wished I'd gone on it more. I'm from San Diego so HBJ's actions on Marineland never set well with me. Then again, the things they did with Sea World didn't set well with me either. I was glad when Anheiser-Busch bought them out and made Sea World great. Too bad it was too late for this great ( and vastly superior ) place. If not for that it would still be in business today, and surrounded by angry SJWs with signs picketing whatever animal treatment they deem is unfair this week.

That's a terrible way to treat people. They didn't even offer them jobs at Sea World? I remember Marineland. When we were at Sea World's Dolphin show with a piolet whale they called Bubbles. I asked an employee if it was the one from Marineland and she said it was. How long do whales live?

This actually makes me sad. We did not realize how cruel it was to keep these animals in captivity. Breaks my heart.
