Melvin was honestly trying to help Jody even with that punch. Considering how everything plays out later, he knew Jody was heading down a bad road. That scene with the gun later on. He just calmly took the gun and helped Jody deal with the situation. Not everyone would do that. But Melvin did. He knew Jody finally got that wake up call. In the end, Melvin proved he did care about Jody and his mom.

Yup, exactly!!! Real life story here. I’m 43 now, but when I was a little kid my father owned a metal fabrication shop outside of Philadelphia, Pa. One of his close buddies was a former NFL linebacker for the Green Bay Packers. He was 6 ft 6” and close to 400 lbs of solid muscle. Dude was a nice guy but had a mean streak in him when he got mad. I was about 7 years old at home one night when my dad and 4 of his buddies went out to a local bar to get some drinks together. A couple of college aged kids were drunk and decided to pick a fight with the 400 lbs lineman guy along with my dad (who was a beast of a man in his prime years) and the rest of the crew. Long story short, the three college kids got beat up so bad that each one of them had to spend multiple days in the ICU in Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. My mother got a phone from the Pa State Police informing her that her husband (my father) got arrested, along with his buddies and were in the county lockup for the night. The next day my mother bailed my father out and then he bailed his buddies out once he was out. I don’t remember all the details about what happened or how it went down, but charges were later dropped against my father and his buddies because the college kids were drunk and initiated the fight. Later on when I got into my teenage years my father sat me down one night at home and told me some truths about life. I remember this line he said; “son, don’t be stupid around people you don’t know and never insult a group of grown men you don’t know!” “And if you go out, always watch your back and if a fight breaks out keep your back to the wall!” I’ve always remembered those words from him. My father passed away 3 years ago from a heart attack at 72. He was one hard man in his prime, and he cared a lot for his family. And so did the former lineman although I haven’t heard anything about him for years.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Everyone is so strung up on who is wrong in this situation. They're all wrong, but they're all right. Beautiful writing
@iamrysheem11 күн бұрын
@@1990mamani disagree. I think in the larger context they all have good points but in the actual scene. Jody is actually the one who is in the right. His mother accused him of basically committing a crime then was completely ok with melvin actually doing it. Then melvin provoked jodi and jodi was right it actually is his house as well. If the mom wanted him to do all that extra stuff she should’ve raised him differently and asked. Calling him out on it in that moment was just a deflection from her poor decision making and melvin shouldnt be allowed to stay he handle everything about this situation wrong including the whole reason why it started. Also jodi was actually just trying to leave which is actually the right thing to do to deescalate the situation and wasnt allowed to and was unfairly put into that position by him and her. The mom is defending a man who’s literally saying he’s going to kill her child. When melvin is crying afterwards about fucking up that because only at that point did he realize it was all his fault. Only in the larger context did Jodi indeed have to grow up. But all that had nothing to do with accusing him of planting weed and egging him on to fight. They should have said that to him at a more appropriate time.
@koop2.1.510 күн бұрын
@@iamrysheemchill baby boy, jody wasn’t in the right. If I do something wrong you think my wife is suppose to scold me like she would one of the kids (if she believed they did it initially)? That’s between that woman n her man; jody should have stayed out of it when Melvin took accountability & apologized. & what Melvin was saying was real 💩 that Jody needed to hear. He got upset n put hands on that man first
@iamrysheem10 күн бұрын
@ thats not her husband. And the problem is he’s not kid. Jody in this movie is grown man. Who another grown man violated his homestead by planting drugs. Jody is not tactful that doesnt mean he’s wrong. You getting caught up in the emotions of their fight. If you step back you would see Jody simply could’ve called cops. And once again the problem lies in the fact that the mom has poorly defined how her household should be run. And honestly anywhere but the hood would be considered to have chosen a man poorly. She has Jody as the man of the house and now when something like this pops up she expects him to know that the dynamic has shifted without telling him. Jody was right. That man should’ve not been in that house after that based on nothing else but his actions and judgement. The mom desperately needing D dont change that. Once again it her poorly managing her household. And setting a bad example.

Oh please. He owe his momma an apology for taking advantage of her by acting like the man of the house, but not helping her with none of the bills. @@tboneforrealBoth Jody, and his mother were in the wrong. Jody's mother only realized his wrongs once he was disrespecting her, no other woman. She expected him to give her the same respect, when in reality.. he never knew what respect was to begin with ...And though he was in the wrong for never helping his mother, you really have to question who brought him up to think that... This type of shit was okay... To constantly cheat on women involved in his romantic life,, disrespect his mother's company, and the list goes on. The crazy part is Jody was actually right in this situation. Juanita immediately blamed him, yelled and cussed him out and when she found out Jody didn’t have anything to do with it, she didn’t even apologize. I know Jody is immature overall, but he had a right to be a little upset over being accused of something he didn’t do and then not even get a “I’m sorry.” He lost the battle however by getting emotional over Melvin not receiving the same response because he failed to realize unlike himself, Melvin didn’t try to make excuses for his faults or short comings, he simply owned up to it apologized like a man should. Few other comments also pointed out, the stare wasn’t meant to antagonize Jody but to teach him how a man handles things, he was just too emotional to listen at that time.
@channell119 ай бұрын
@@user-iq7cu5tq3h Yep. The movie's called "Baby Boy", but Jody acts a lot more like an angry, immature woman. Antagonizing, disrespectful, loud, etc.-because he's never had to face consequences of acting that way. Melvin gives him some consequences-and ultimately helps fuel his growth as a man. When you look at Juanita's various faults, she's the root cause of why Jody's the way he is. In his own way, Melvin's a father figure Jody never had.

Bruh had on the jumpsuit, highwatered with black boots on, grey thermo underneath, bald head, smoking a black and mild.... Leave sir alone, you don't want that smoke. There is a difference between a brotha that gives a shih and one that doesn't give a fuhh.. Jody you found out. Great scene btw... I was crying when She asked Melvin what he was thinking, Jody said "he was thinking about blazing!" hahaha, Perfect screenplay and perfect acting! Ving Rhames really took it to the next level, ngl he had me shook as a kid when I first saw this movie: you could sense he was feral lion trying to live among men peaceably, but such natures can not be truly suppressed, they can only be monitored continually.

Tyrese's facial expressions every time he gets his ass whooped by Melvin are by far the funniest parts of the movie

Melvin handles this whole movie like an OG, and that's facts

Yeah, but he's not the guy to deliver that message considering his past. Regardless if Jody needed to grow up, it'd be hard for me to accept a guy who is a convicted felon moving in with me living there. There definitely would be some tension in the household.

@@__1201 I agree. Trust definitely needed to be earned. In the end, Melvin turned out to be a stand up guy who learned from his mistakes. And Jody needed someone, regardless of his past, to teach him how to be a responsible adult because it's clear his mother babied him growing up.

I think Melvin meant well from the very beginning. But the gangster in him made him assert his dominance right away which Jodi hated.

@@stiles7215 if my mom brought in a new boy friend who immediately starts talking about him doing work and that he killed people and that dudes on the streets owe him favors I wouldn’t like it either.
